To play a Console Archives game on Nintendo Switch 2, find that specific release in Nintendo eShop, buy or download it if it is listed in your region, then launch it from the HOME Menu. Console Archives games are individual digital releases; you do not need Nintendo Switch Online just to play one. That membership is for Nintendo Classics, a separate service.
Download and start a Console Archives game
- Connect to the internet. From the HOME Menu, open Nintendo eShop.
- Search for the exact game title. Availability can vary by region, so check the eShop on your own console rather than relying on a list from another country or an older announcement.
- Check the product page. Review the current price, language information, and any listed requirements before purchasing. The available reporting does not establish a complete current catalog or regional price list.
- Buy or download the release. When the download finishes, return to the HOME Menu and select the game’s software tile.
- Set up play in the game. Where available, use the game’s settings for button layouts, screen options, or save and load functions. The reported series features include customizable button layouts and screen settings, plus save/load functionality (Nintendo Insider, February 6, 2026).
The controllers included with Switch 2 are enough to begin unless the individual game listing says otherwise. Nintendo says the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can be paired wirelessly with Switch 2, but the available information does not indicate that a separate controller is required for Console Archives games (Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility information).

Console Archives is different from Nintendo Classics
Console Archives refers to Hamster Corporation’s individually released retro-console games. Nintendo Classics is a collection of library apps accessed through a Nintendo Switch Online membership of the required tier. For Nintendo Classics, Nintendo’s instructions are to select Nintendo Switch Online, open Nintendo Classics, choose a library, and download its software from eShop. Those steps are for Nintendo Classics—not for buying a Console Archives game (Nintendo Classics information).
| Access path | How you get games | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Console Archives | Find and purchase or download an individual release in Nintendo eShop. | Whether the specific game is listed in your region, its price, language, and any requirements. |
| Nintendo Classics | Download the relevant library app from eShop and use the Nintendo Switch Online membership tier required for that library. | Which library includes the game and what membership tier is required. Nintendo says the GameCube library is exclusive to Switch 2. |
Nintendo Classics covers libraries for systems including NES, SNES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, and GameCube; the libraries and required membership tiers differ. A game’s appearance in a Nintendo Classics library does not establish that it is available as a Console Archives release, or vice versa.

Check availability and language for the specific game
Announcements can confirm that a release was offered or planned at a particular time, but they are not a complete, current storefront catalog. A February 6, 2026 report identified Cool Boarders and Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos as initial Console Archives releases on Switch 2 eShop, reported as available worldwide at that time (Nintendo Insider). Treat that as a dated snapshot, not proof of current availability in every eShop region.
A later report dated August 19, 2026 said Rhapsody II: Ballad of the Little Princess was scheduled for digital release on Switch 2 and PS5 on August 20, 2026. It described the game’s UI and manual as English, while the game text was Japanese (Gematsu). Because language support differs by title, use the language details on the game’s current eShop page rather than assuming a series-wide language standard.

Will an original Switch version run on Switch 2?
Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch software, but Nintendo cautions that some games may not be supported or fully compatible (Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility information). Backward compatibility does not confirm that any particular Console Archives release is available: check for the specific title in eShop and consult its listing for platform and requirements.
