Measure the distance from your usual eye position to the screen, use a viewing-distance guide to shortlist OLED sizes, then check how each option fits your seats, wall or stand, and budget. For a 4K OLED, sitting relatively close does not automatically mean you need a smaller screen. The right size is the one that feels comfortable and immersive in your actual layout—not a number dictated by the room label alone.
What size OLED TV should you get?
Start with viewing distance, but treat it as a way to narrow the choices rather than a formula that produces one objectively correct size. Manufacturer guides use different assumptions: LG USA offers a diagonal-size estimate based on a 40-degree viewing angle, Sony gives a minimum 4K viewing distance based on screen height, and Samsung Canada publishes recommended distances for specific sizes. These are manufacturer rules of thumb, not interchangeable standards.
If two adjacent sizes are plausible, compare how immersive each feels, whether the screen is comfortable to scan, how it works for other seats, and whether the TV fits the installation space and budget.
How do you find the right OLED TV size?
- Measure your viewing distance. Measure from your normal eye position to the planned screen plane—not from the back wall to the sofa. If several seats are used regularly, measure the closest and farthest ones.
- Choose a reference method. For a quick diagonal estimate, LG USA says to divide viewing distance in inches by 1.2; this is its guideline for a 40-degree viewing angle. For example, at 120 inches, the result is a 100-inch diagonal estimate. Treat that as a starting point, not a required size. LG’s room-size guide.
- Compare actual sizes around the estimate. Samsung Canada’s current guide lists recommended 4K viewing distances of 1.4 m for 55 inches, 1.7 m for 65 inches, 1.9 m for 75 inches, 2.0 m for 77 inches, and 2.1 m for 83 inches. These are Samsung’s recommendations, not a guarantee for every OLED model or viewer. Samsung’s size guide.
- Check the TV’s physical dimensions. Diagonal size does not tell you whether the screen fits a wall, console, or alcove. Samsung’s table gives example dimensions of 1,440 × 831 mm for a 65-inch TV and 1,720 × 990 mm for a 77-inch TV. Check the exact model’s width, height, and stand footprint before buying; designs vary.
- Evaluate the finalists from your seats. Consider how much of your view the screen fills, whether subtitles and fast action are comfortable to follow, and whether viewers sitting off-center can see well. Then weigh immersion against installation and cost.
Why do OLED resolution and viewing distance matter?
Many OLED TVs are 4K, and higher resolution can make close viewing more practical: Samsung says 4K lets viewers sit closer or choose a larger screen at the same distance while retaining clarity. That does not mean every viewer should sit as close as possible; comfort and the amount of screen filling your view still matter.

Sony’s 4K guidance uses screen height rather than diagonal: its support article recommends a viewing distance of 1.5 times the TV’s vertical screen size. How should your room and viewing habits affect the choice?
- More than one seat: Check both the nearest and farthest regular viewing positions. A size that feels immersive from one seat may be less comfortable elsewhere, and side seats may have different sightlines.
- Movies, sports, and gaming: If you want a more immersive view, you may prefer the larger of two sizes that fit. Sony Electronics advises considering intended content and suggests TV height of about two-thirds the viewing distance as a general rule—not a universal requirement. Sony’s TV selection guide.
- Casual or bedroom viewing: A compact screen may be a better match when the room is used for varied activities or a large screen would dominate the space. Room-based recommendations are examples, not rules that override your measured distance and preference.
- Furniture and installation: Measure available width and height, and account for the stand or mounting arrangement. Confirm that the placement works with the room rather than relying on the diagonal alone.
- Budget: If both candidates work for viewing and installation, let the price difference and your preference for immersion settle the choice.

How to choose between two OLED sizes
Compare the two candidate diagonals in the room, not just on a size chart. If possible, mark each screen’s approximate width and height on the wall or use a life-size outline. Sit in the regular viewing positions and consider whether the larger option feels engaging or forces you to scan too much, especially with subtitles or fast action. Confirm the actual model dimensions and installation fit, then make the final call based on comfort, immersion, and budget.
