Choose Halo: Campaign Evolved if you want a modern rebuild of the original Combat Evolved campaign, expanded with three prequel missions and cross-platform co-op. Choose Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC) if you want a much larger package spanning six Halo games, 67 campaign missions, and more than 120 multiplayer maps. The practical difference is focus versus breadth: one is a rebuilt starting point; the other is a collection of much of the series.
How do the two Halo games differ?
| Priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Experience the original Combat Evolved story as a modern rebuild | Halo: Campaign Evolved | It rebuilds the original campaign and adds three prequel missions. Halo Waypoint describes the campaign and additions. |
| Play several Halo campaigns in one collection | MCC | The Xbox Store listing identifies six games and 67 campaign missions. |
| Play Halo multiplayer maps and modes | MCC | The Xbox Store listing reports more than 120 multiplayer maps, plus Spartan Ops maps and community Forge content. |
| Play campaign co-op with friends on different platforms | Campaign Evolved | Halo Waypoint specifies online co-op for up to four players, cross-platform play, and shared progression. |
| Play co-op on the same couch | Either, depending on platform | Campaign Evolved supports two-player split-screen on consoles. The Xbox Store listing for MCC identifies local co-op and split-screen. |
What does Halo: Campaign Evolved include?
Halo: Campaign Evolved is a ground-up remake of the Halo: Combat Evolved campaign. The original story remains, but the visuals, cinematics, controls, and level design have been rebuilt. It also adds three missions set before the original campaign, featuring the Master Chief and Sergeant Avery Johnson. Those additions make it a focused way to revisit the beginning of the story, rather than a bundle of multiple Halo campaigns.
New weapons, vehicles, and replay options
Halo Waypoint lists nine additional weapons drawn from across the franchise, vehicle improvements, and more Skulls. Skulls can modify gameplay, and mission remixing lets players revisit missions with those changes. These features expand the campaign without turning the game into MCC’s multi-game collection.
Co-op and platforms
The official feature description specifies online co-op for up to four players across Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PS5, with cross-platform play and shared progression. Console players can also use two-player split-screen. Xbox announced a global launch on July 28, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam, and PlayStation 5; it also announced availability at launch with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Check the store and subscription catalog for your region before buying, since access can vary.

What does Halo: The Master Chief Collection include?
MCC combines six games: Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 4, Halo: Reach, and Halo 3: ODST. The Xbox Store describes the collection as containing 67 campaign missions and more than 120 multiplayer maps, along with Spartan Ops maps and community Forge content. That breadth makes MCC the better starting choice if you want multiple campaigns or Halo multiplayer in one package.
The Xbox listing identifies Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Cloud Gaming as play options, with local and online co-op and multiplayer. That is an Xbox storefront description, not a guarantee of the current edition, availability, or price on every PC storefront or in every region. If you plan to play on PC, check the relevant store for the version available to you.

Which should you play first?
Choose Campaign Evolved for the original story in a new form
Start with Campaign Evolved if you are new to Halo and mainly want the original story, rebuilt for current platforms, with its three additional prequel missions. It is also the clearer fit if your group wants four-player campaign co-op across different platforms and shared progression.
Choose MCC for more campaigns and multiplayer
Pick MCC if your priority is the largest collection of Halo campaign content or classic multiplayer maps and modes. Its six included games and 67 listed campaign missions offer far more series coverage than a single remade campaign.

If you already own one or both
Base the decision on the content you do not have: the rebuilt Combat Evolved campaign and prequel missions, or the additional games and multiplayer in MCC. Check the current store listing and subscription catalog rather than assuming an earlier bundle or subscription offer is still available.
