Foldable phones can last for years, but a hinge-cycle rating is not a guarantee that the whole phone will survive that long. The inner display, handling conditions, repair costs, warranty terms, and access to local service all affect the ownership equation. Before buying, check the repair price and coverage for the exact model in your country.
What a hinge cycle rating does—and does not—tell you
A fold cycle means opening and closing the phone. Samsung’s support guidance says the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Flip5 hinge is designed to handle over 200,000 folding and unfolding cycles on average. Samsung translates that estimate to more than five years at 100 opens and closes a day. For the Fold6 and Flip6, Samsung gives an average estimate of 200,000 cycles and the same approximate five-year translation at around 100 folds daily. These are manufacturer design estimates, not independent tests or guarantees of whole-phone lifespan.
A hinge rating does not establish how often a display, battery, or other component will fail, nor does it predict the chance that a particular device will need repair. The available evidence also does not establish comparative real-world failure rates for current foldables.
Why the inner screen and environment matter
The flexible inner display needs different care from a conventional glass phone screen. Samsung advises avoiding sharp or excessive pressure on it, keeping objects and debris out of the fold, and leaving the installed screen-protector film in place unless directed otherwise. It warns that sand and small particles can damage the screen or affect hinge performance. Follow the instructions for the specific model rather than assuming a foldable can tolerate the same handling as a regular phone.

Water and dust ratings also have limits. Samsung says ratings depend on the model and laboratory conditions, water resistance can diminish with normal wear, and IP48 does not mean complete dust protection. Motorola likewise advises avoiding dust exposure on the Razr Fold because it can reduce hinge life or damage the display. No rating should be read as waterproof or dustproof.
How much can a foldable screen repair cost?
Samsung’s US price page lists the following suggested amounts for a subsequent out-of-warranty internal-screen repair. Prices may vary by region or service location, and taxes or fees are excluded; promotional first-repair offers have separate terms.

These are US suggested prices, not universal quotes or estimates of how likely a repair is. In India, Motorola says its repair partner provides a quote after receiving the device when standard warranty does not apply. For any model, request a current local quote and check whether the quoted service includes parts, labor, and any applicable fees.
Warranty, damage plans, and service access
A standard warranty and accidental-damage protection are different. Motorola’s cited policy excludes cracked or cosmetically damaged screens unless a covered defect caused the damage; its India support guidance says physical damage is charged separately. Coverage depends on jurisdiction and the exact policy, so read the warranty and any optional plan terms for the phone and country you are considering. Check premiums, deductibles, exclusions, claim limits, and repair locations rather than assuming a plan covers every screen incident.

Service access matters as much as a posted repair price: ask about authorized repair options, turnaround, parts availability, and whether service requires mailing the phone away. Samsung announced self-repair for select Fold5 and Flip5 models in the US using genuine parts, tools, and repair guides; that does not mean every foldable component is DIY-repairable or that the program is available for every model or location. Samsung also describes certified walk-in, mail-in, and at-home care, but availability depends on the device and area.

Compare the phone’s purchase price and the length of time you expect to keep it with the cost of a consequential repair, the coverage and cost of any protection plan, and likely service downtime. Do not turn a hinge-cycle estimate or a repair quote into an expected annual repair cost: neither provides a failure probability. A useful comparison is model-specific and local.

- Check whether the cycle figure is a manufacturer estimate or an independent test, and what component it measures.
- Look up the inner-screen repair price, including whether a first-repair promotion differs from later repairs.
- Read the warranty and damage-plan terms for the exact country, including exclusions and deductibles.
- Confirm dust and liquid-resistance guidance and the handling restrictions for the model.
- Verify nearby repair options, turnaround, and parts access before relying on a quoted price.
Care steps that reduce avoidable risks
- Keep sharp objects and excessive pressure away from the inner screen.
- Check that cards, coins, keys, and debris are not caught between the panels before folding.
- Do not remove the installed screen protector unless the manufacturer directs you to seek service.
- Avoid exposing the hinge to sand and follow the phone’s exact liquid-resistance instructions.
- If you use a case, choose one designed for the exact foldable model; a case is not a guarantee against hinge or screen failure.
