If Red Dead Redemption 2 runs slowly on PC, start with the in-game quality slider or the Graphics Benchmark, then adjust settings in small steps. Treat ordinary low frame rates, multi-second stalls, and launch errors as different problems: they call for different fixes, and no single setting or graphics API is best for every PC.
Start with a repeatable graphics baseline
For a quick starting point, use the in-game quality slider. To test a more deliberate configuration, open Settings > Graphics > Run Benchmark Test. Rockstar recommends the benchmark to help balance frame rate and image quality; it does not publish universal expected frame rates or setting-by-setting gains. As Rockstar notes in its graphics tuning guidance, last updated April 30, 2024, “Depending on system configuration, different settings will have different impacts on game performance.”
- Run the benchmark with your current settings and note how the game feels as well as the result.
- Change one setting, or a small group of related settings, rather than changing everything at once.
- Run the benchmark again and compare the result and visual quality. Keep changes that help on your system.
Which graphics settings should you test first?
For detailed tuning, Rockstar’s first settings to experiment with are:
- Multisampling Anti-Aliasing (MSAA)
- Reflection Quality
- Water Quality
- Volumetric Quality
- Near Volumetric Resolution
Rockstar also lists TAA, texture, lighting, shadow, screen-space ambient occlusion, anisotropic filtering, far shadow, tessellation, FXAA, volumetric lighting, triple buffering, global illumination, particle, mirror, and far volumetric resolution as options to adjust. Treat these as settings to test, not a universal preset or a ranked list of guaranteed performance gains.

Fix multi-second stalls separately from low frame rates
If the game pauses or stalls for several seconds, use Rockstar’s targeted guidance for that symptom rather than assuming the issue is ordinary low FPS. Rockstar says certain NVIDIA graphics drivers can cause significant stalls on systems with 4-core and 6-core CPUs. Its support article, last updated May 2, 2024, recommends keeping video drivers current and removing custom launch arguments.
- Install current graphics drivers for your GPU.
- Check the Rockstar Games Launcher or Epic Games Launcher for custom launch arguments and remove them.
- Test the game again to see whether the stalls persist.
This is a known context Rockstar identifies, not evidence that every stutter has the same cause.

Resolve ERR_GFX_INIT when the game will not launch
For ERR_GFX_INIT, Rockstar’s error-specific support steps, last updated June 12, 2024, include updating graphics drivers, removing configuration files, or switching the graphics API.
- Update your graphics drivers and retry the game.
- If the error remains, open the game’s Settings folder and delete its files except
system.xml. - If needed, edit
system.xmlto change the graphics API between Vulkan and DirectX 12. Rockstar also says to remove files beginning withsga_if they are present after changing the API.
Use the file-removal and configuration steps for this launch error, and follow Rockstar’s instructions for locating the game’s Settings folder. An API switch here is a troubleshooting option, not proof that Vulkan or DirectX 12 is faster in general.

Resolve ERR_GFX_STATE at launch
For ERR_GFX_STATE, Rockstar’s support article, last updated May 2, 2024, gives a separate sequence:
- Update your graphics drivers.
- If the error continues, switch the graphics API from Vulkan to DirectX 12.
- If that does not work, disable fullscreen optimization from the game executable’s Compatibility tab.
Rockstar provides navigation for Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, and Epic Games Launcher users. Use the instructions for your launcher and this specific error; do not treat the API switch as a general performance setting.

Check whether your PC meets Rockstar’s requirements
Rockstar’s official store listing specifies the following PC requirements. They describe the publisher’s minimum and recommended hardware, not a guaranteed resolution, graphics preset, or frame rate; Rockstar also notes that requirements can change.
