What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Windows Search and Copilot are different tools: Search finds apps, files, settings, and related results from Windows, while the Copilot app handles conversational questions and follow-ups. On Copilot+ PCs, Search can use semantic indexing to find relevant files by meaning; it still returns search results rather than acting like a chatbot. A separate opt-in Copilot feature, PC Insights, can answer some questions about your device after you grant permission.
What does “Windows Search AI chat” mean?
“Windows Search AI chat” is not Microsoft’s name for one documented feature. It can refer to Windows Search with semantic indexing, which improves how results are found on Copilot+ PCs, or be confused with the Copilot app, which is designed for conversation. PC Insights is a third, separate feature inside Copilot that can answer questions about a PC’s state when available and enabled.
In short, Search is the place to look for something; Copilot is the place to ask for an explanation or continue a conversation.
What can Windows Search do?
Find apps, files, and settings
Search from Start or the taskbar to find apps, files, settings, and suggestions. Results can be browsed by categories such as web, settings, documents, folders, apps, and photos. In File Explorer, search is scoped by default to the current folder and its child folders; filters include date modified, kind, and size. See Microsoft’s guide to finding what you need with Microsoft Search.

Find files by meaning on a Copilot+ PC
On Copilot+ PCs, semantic indexing supplements traditional indexing. This can help when you describe what a file contains rather than remembering its exact name or wording. Microsoft’s example is that searching for “pasta” may also return related items such as lasagna. The feature expands the results Search can surface; it is not documented as generating a conversational answer.
Microsoft lists support for these document formats: .txt, .pdf, .docx, .doc, .rtf, .pptx, .ppt, .xls, and .xlsx. Listed image formats are .jpg/.jpeg, .png, .gif, .bmp, and .ico. Improved semantic search is optimized for English (US, Canada, Australia, and UK), French (France and Canada), German, Spanish (Spain and Mexico), Japanese, and Simplified Chinese; other language combinations may continue to use traditional lexical search. Details are in Microsoft’s Windows search indexing documentation.

Control indexing and privacy
Semantic indexing is enabled by default on Copilot+ PCs. In Windows Settings, you can disable indexing and searching for selected locations or file types. Microsoft recommends plugging in the device during initial indexing. Microsoft says semantic index data is stored locally on the PC—or in local Cloud PC storage for AI-enabled Windows 365 devices—is not stored by Microsoft, and is not used to train AI models. It also cautions that installed apps may be able to read index data.
What can Copilot do that Search cannot?
The Copilot app supports conversational questions and follow-ups, along with Windows-focused features such as file search, screenshot questions, Copilot Vision, web content in a side pane, and guidance to Windows Settings. For example, you can ask about what is visible in a screenshot or ask for help finding a file, then continue with a follow-up question. Microsoft documents file search for supported document formats and says access can be adjusted in Copilot app settings.

Copilot can be opened with a Copilot key or Windows key + C, although shortcut behavior is configurable. New Windows 11 PCs may have the app installed by default; other users can install it from the Microsoft Store. See Microsoft’s Copilot on Windows overview.
Ask about your PC with PC Insights
PC Insights is an opt-in, experimental feature that is gradually rolling out in the Copilot app. If it is available, you can ask questions such as “What graphics card do I have?”, “Do I have enough space for a 100GB game?”, or “What’s my current CPU usage?” Copilot asks for permission before retrieving relevant device information. You can allow access for one session, always allow similar requests, or decline; permissions can later be changed or revoked.

Microsoft says it does not access organizational Microsoft 365 email, Teams chats, calendars, or organizational documents. Personal files and system information accessed by PC Insights are not stored or used to train models, though conversation activity may be used to improve the experience, including training, depending on settings. Availability and details are covered in Microsoft’s PC Insights documentation.
Use web search, when available
Copilot can use web search for current, web-grounded answers, but availability depends on account type, subscription, and organization controls. Depending on license, web search may have standard or priority access. The Sources button shows the Bing query and sources used, so you can inspect what informed an answer. Microsoft explains the conditions in its guide to web search in Copilot Chat and agents.

Is Windows Search AI the same as Copilot?
No. Windows Search is an operating-system search interface; semantic indexing makes its results more meaning-aware on Copilot+ PCs. Copilot is a separate app for conversation and related tasks. PC Insights adds permission-based questions about device state inside Copilot, but remains experimental and does not operate as a repair or monitoring tool.
