Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto V build open worlds for different kinds of play. RDR2 centers on Arthur Morgan, the Van der Linde gang, and frontier routines such as caring for a horse, hunting, crafting, and spending time at camp. GTA V centers on three switchable protagonists, heists, and movement across Los Santos and Blaine County. RDR2 suits players drawn to character interaction and frontier life; GTA V suits players looking for urban mobility and a wide criminal-sandbox activity mix. Neither game is an objective winner for every player.
How do RDR2 and GTA 5 build their worlds?
In Red Dead Redemption 2, Arthur Morgan is a member of the Van der Linde gang, whose story unfolds in a frontier setting shaped by survival. The world’s activities connect to that premise: the player can hunt, craft, build trust with a horse, and take part in camp life.

Grand Theft Auto V follows Michael, Trevor, and Franklin, whose stories intersect around heists. Players can switch between the three protagonists while exploring Los Santos and Blaine County, a setting that brings city and countryside together. Rockstar’s original announcement emphasizes that ensemble structure and the broader world; its platform-upgrade details date to 2014 and should not be treated as current technical specifications.
How do their open-world systems compare?
| System | Red Dead Redemption 2 | Grand Theft Auto V |
|---|---|---|
| Setting and story | Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang in a frontier survival story. Rockstar’s product page | Michael, Trevor, and Franklin in intersecting stories built around heists in Los Santos and Blaine County. Rockstar’s 2014 announcement |
| People and encounters | A contextual interaction menu supports greetings and other exchanges. Responses can be positive, awkward, or aggressive; honor and witnesses reporting crimes also feature in the PlayStation overview. | The cited announcement highlights protagonist switching and heists. It does not establish an NPC interaction system directly comparable to RDR2’s. |
| Routines and activities | Camp chores and donations, hunting, crafting, and horse bonding are among the activities described in the PlayStation overview. | Rockstar’s announcement describes wildlife, weather, and world details. The current store page foregrounds heists, races, vehicles, businesses, and other activities; some of these are GTA Online offerings rather than Story Mode features. |
| Movement and transport | Horses are presented as individual animals that build trust and can carry skins, carcasses, weapons, and gear. | The current GTA Online description emphasizes vehicles, upgrades, and races. Do not assume these Online options are all available in Story Mode. |
The RDR2 interaction, routine, and horse details above come from Sid Shuman’s PlayStation.Blog feature overview, published October 1, 2018. Its descriptions are reported features, not results of a controlled comparison. Read the PlayStation.Blog overview for its full feature list.

What does each game reward you for doing?
RDR2 connects small actions to frontier life
RDR2’s systems encourage players to spend time with its people and routines, rather than treating every encounter as a fight. Greetings, camp contributions, hunting, crafting, and horse bonding give the player several ways to engage with the setting. As Shuman put it in the 2018 overview, “There’s more to interacting with this world than just drawing a weapon.” The game also has an honor system, and witnesses can report crimes.
That emphasis is reinforced by the horse system: a horse’s trust develops over time, and the animal serves as transport and a way to carry equipment and hunting spoils. These are connected parts of a frontier routine, not simply a menu of unrelated diversions.

GTA V emphasizes mobility, switching, and criminal-sandbox variety
GTA V’s defining structure is the ability to switch among Michael, Trevor, and Franklin as their stories converge around heists. Its city-and-countryside setting and vehicle-centered activity options support a more mobile, broad-ranging style of play. Rockstar’s current product page describes GTA Online separately, with missions, heists, races, businesses, and social spaces; those online offerings should not be mistaken for a complete list of Story Mode systems.
Are the online worlds part of the same comparison?
No. Red Dead Online and GTA Online are distinct online offerings, and their features should be separated from each game’s single-player Story Mode.
Rank #3
- 1187360
- Red Dead Online: Rockstar describes roles and activities including bounty hunting, trading, collecting, moonshining, and naturalist play on the RDR2 product page.
- GTA Online: Rockstar describes an evolving online world supporting up to 30 players, with missions, heists, races, businesses, and social spaces on the GTA V product page. Online features can change over time.
These online modes broaden each game beyond its story campaign, but they do not make the single-player worlds directly equivalent. Compare them separately if online play is your priority.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which game has the better open world?
There is no supported universal ranking. The cited material does not provide a measured map-size comparison, a controlled NPC-count comparison, or a test of simulation depth. Instead, the games make different design choices:
- Choose RDR2 if you want a frontier setting built around a central character, camp life, animal and horse systems, hunting, and direct encounters with people.
- Choose GTA V if you want three protagonists, a city-and-countryside map, heist-focused storytelling, and an open world organized around vehicles and varied criminal-sandbox activities.
In short, RDR2’s world is more oriented around frontier routines and character interaction, while GTA V’s is more oriented around protagonist switching, urban mobility, and activity variety. Which feels better depends on the kind of open-world play you enjoy.
