Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA centralized exchange (CEX) typically administers your account and the collateral you deposit; a decentralized perpetual venue may let you trade through a wallet and protocol contracts instead. That changes who controls assets and how trades are executed, but it does not remove the market, leverage, or liquidation risks of a perpetual position. To compare costs, look beyond the headline trading fee: funding, liquidation charges, and any network or bridge costs can also matter.
What changes when you trade a perpetual on a CEX or a decentralized venue?
A perpetual futures contract has no conventional expiration date. A funding mechanism transfers payments between long and short position holders to help keep the contract price aligned with a spot or index reference. Depending on the rate and the venue’s rules, either side may pay. The rate and payment schedule vary by market and venue.
| What to compare | Centralized exchange | Decentralized perpetual venue |
|---|---|---|
| Collateral control | Ask who holds or administers your account balance, and what the withdrawal terms are. | Check whether you retain wallet control and whether contracts, bridges, or custodians handle collateral. |
| Trading fees | Check current maker and taker rates, volume tiers, and any token discounts. | Check protocol or market fees, plus any network, bridge, or conversion costs for your route. |
| Funding | Find the calculation, payment interval, and where the rate is displayed for the specific contract. | Check the exact market’s funding formula, rate display, and payment cadence. |
| Liquidation | Review maintenance-margin rules, liquidation procedures, and any liquidation charges. | Check liquidation triggers, oracle and liquidity dependencies, transaction conditions, and any charges. |
| Market quality | Compare the contract’s depth, spread, uptime, and execution conditions. | Compare depth and spread, and understand oracle, validator, and execution dependencies. |
| Access and recourse | Identify the legal entity, jurisdictions served, and available support or complaint route. | Check jurisdictional restrictions and what governance or support mechanisms are available. |
These are questions to ask, not a claim that every venue has the same design. A “DEX” label alone does not establish who controls collateral, how withdrawals work, or what happens when a trade is liquidated.
How to compare the full cost of a trade
A useful comparison follows the position from entry through exit. Trading fees are only one component, and a low opening fee does not tell you whether a position will be inexpensive to hold.

- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Entry and exit fees: Check maker or taker treatment for both orders, the applicable fee tier, and whether the order type will actually qualify for the rate you expect.
- Funding while the position is open: Funding accrues according to the venue’s market-specific formula and schedule. It may be a cost or a receipt; rates can change while a position is open.
- Liquidation-related charges: Review the rules and charges that apply if collateral falls below the maintenance requirement. A forced close can also produce a different execution price than the one you intended.
- Route costs: For an on-chain route, account for applicable transaction, bridge, or conversion costs. Confirm which steps your chosen route requires.
For a like-for-like estimate, compare the same underlying market, notional exposure, order types, fee tier, collateral, holding period, funding assumption, and entry and exit conditions. If any of those assumptions differ, the cost comparison may not be meaningful. Check the current fee and funding information for the exact venue and contract rather than relying on an old headline rate.
What custody and control mean in practice
With a CEX, collateral is commonly managed within the exchange’s account and custody system. Access to the account, withdrawals, venue operations, and the handling of an active position depend on that exchange’s procedures and legal and operational structure.

A decentralized perpetual product may use wallet signatures and smart contracts, but the specific arrangement matters: identify which assets remain under wallet control and which are deposited into contracts or routed through other services. Protocol-based execution is not the same as having unrestricted control over collateral while it is committed to an active leveraged position.
Market-structure work by the Bank for International Settlements provides context for differences between centralized and decentralized finance. Comparisons published by trading venues, such as Kraken’s, can be useful for identifying questions to ask, but should be read as vendor material rather than neutral evidence.

Risks that apply to both venue types
Price moves, leverage, and liquidation
Leverage magnifies the effect of price changes on a position. If equity falls below the maintenance-margin requirement, a venue or protocol may reduce or close the position under its rules. Volatility or thin liquidity can make a forced close happen at an unfavorable time or price. Self-custody does not prevent liquidation of an active leveraged position.
Execution and liquidity
Depth, spreads, uptime, and execution conditions affect what price a trader can obtain, especially when closing a position quickly. Compare these for the specific contract and venue; the label “centralized” or “decentralized” does not establish market quality.

Additional protocol dependencies
Decentralized products may add exposure to smart-contract code, oracles, bridges, transaction inclusion, liquidity mechanisms, or governance. Which dependencies matter depends on the particular protocol and collateral route. Wallet control is not a guarantee against failures or losses involving those components.
Custody and venue operations
On a CEX, account access, custody, and the venue’s operational and liquidation processes are part of the exposure. A hosted public comment about centralized derivatives venues discusses custody, matching, liquidation, and insurance-fund functions together; that is a commentator’s description, not a regulator’s conclusion or a guarantee that a particular exchange offers protection.

How access and legal protections differ
Availability and protections depend on the exact instrument, provider, legal entity, and jurisdiction. A regulated product offered in the United States does not establish that a similarly named offshore or decentralized product has the same status or protections. For example, Coinbase’s U.S. futures product documentation identifies Coinbase Financial Markets as a CFTC-registered futures commission merchant and an NFA member. That product-specific example should not be generalized to other Coinbase products or other venues. The CFTC’s customer guidance also describes risks in virtual-currency spot and derivatives markets.
Before opening an account or connecting a wallet, verify whether the product is available where you are, which entity or protocol provides it, and what support, complaint, or governance route applies to your situation.
A practical checklist before choosing
- Match the product: Compare the same underlying market and a similar notional exposure on each venue.
- Check the current cost terms: Record the applicable maker/taker rates, fee tier, funding formula and cadence, liquidation charges, and route costs.
- Trace the collateral: Determine who controls or administers it, what contracts or services touch it, and how withdrawals work.
- Understand liquidation: Find the maintenance-margin requirement, liquidation trigger and procedure, and the consequences of thin liquidity or execution delays.
- Assess access and recourse: Confirm jurisdictional availability, the legal entity or protocol involved, and the relevant support, complaint, or governance mechanisms.
- Use a realistic holding period: Include changing funding assumptions and both entry and exit conditions rather than judging the position by its opening fee alone.
There is no universal fee winner or safest venue established by these comparison factors alone. The result depends on the specific market, venue rules, trade assumptions, and the control and operational risks you are willing to accept.
