To connect a smart plug to Wi-Fi, add it through the manufacturer’s app, put the plug in pairing mode, select the network it supports, and enter the Wi-Fi password. First check the exact model’s Wi-Fi requirements and electrical ratings: some plugs require 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, but that is not a universal requirement. Keep the plug unplugged from any appliance until setup is complete and you have confirmed the appliance is within its ratings.
Before setup: check the plug, phone, and Wi-Fi requirements
Read the instructions for your exact smart plug before plugging it in. Confirm the Wi-Fi band it supports, whether its setup process uses Bluetooth, and which phone operating systems the app supports. A plug that requires 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi may not connect if your phone is using a different band during onboarding.
Requirements differ by model. Roku’s Indoor Smart Plug SE setup instructions call for Bluetooth on the phone and a connection to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. TP-Link specifies 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for its Tapo P105 and uses Bluetooth during setup. Those specifications apply to the cited models, not every smart plug. Roku’s setup instructions and TP-Link’s Tapo P105 specifications provide model-specific details.
How to connect a smart plug to Wi-Fi
- Install the manufacturer’s app. Download or open the app named in the plug’s instructions. Turn on Bluetooth if the model uses it, and connect your phone to the required Wi-Fi network or band.
- Plug in the smart plug and check its status light. Use a suitable outlet and identify the pairing indicator from the product instructions. Some plugs enter pairing mode automatically. For Roku’s Indoor Smart Plug SE, if the light is not flashing blue, press and hold the power button until it flashes.
- Add the plug in the app. Follow the brand-specific prompts. In the Roku Smart Home app, the documented path is Add device, then Lights & power, then Indoor Smart Plug. Other apps may use different menu names.
- Select the supported Wi-Fi network and enter its password. Choose the network the plug is designed to use and type its password carefully. Roku’s instructions say the 2.4 GHz network should appear in the network-name menu.
- Wait for confirmation, then name the plug. Follow the app’s completion prompt and use the status light as described in the product instructions. Roku says a solid blue light means setup is complete; other models may signal success differently. Give the plug a useful name, such as “desk lamp,” if the app offers that option.

If the smart plug will not connect
- Check the Wi-Fi band. Make sure the network selected in the app meets the plug’s stated requirements. For a model that requires 2.4 GHz, use that network during setup.
- Check Bluetooth and app permissions. Enable Bluetooth if the model uses it for onboarding, and confirm you are using the manufacturer’s app.
- Check pairing mode. Look at the plug’s indicator and follow its manual to enter pairing mode. Do not assume another brand’s button sequence or light pattern applies.
- Re-enter the Wi-Fi password. Check for typing errors, including capitalization.
- Use the model’s troubleshooting or reset instructions. Reset sequences vary, so follow the exact plug’s documentation rather than trying a generic button hold.
For example, TP-Link’s load guidance for Tapo and Kasa plugs is separate from the model-specific pairing steps; consult the app or support instructions for your own plug if these checks do not resolve setup.
Check the appliance before using the plug
Compare the appliance’s voltage, current, wattage, and load type with the ratings printed on the smart plug and listed in its instructions. Do not rely on a generic “smart plug” wattage: ratings differ by model, region, and type of load. Motor-driven appliances and devices with high startup current can exceed a plug’s limits even if their ordinary running demand seems acceptable. TP-Link warns that some such loads may be unsuitable for its Tapo and Kasa plugs, and does not recommend using those plugs with power strips or equipment that requires uninterrupted power. See TP-Link’s guidance on connected loads.

Smart plug safety rules that matter
- Do not exceed the plug’s rating. Amazon’s safety instructions for Smart Plug C2YY37 say not to exceed its rating and not to plug a power strip or another Amazon Smart Plug into it. Follow your own model’s instructions if they differ.
- Do not use it as a substitute for supervision. Amazon warns against using its cited plug to operate equipment where continuous or unsupervised operation could be dangerous, giving stoves and heaters as examples. Do not use a smart plug as a safety control for an appliance that requires direct supervision. Amazon’s safety and compliance information contains the model-specific warning.
- Use it only in an appropriate environment. Amazon’s cited model documentation specifies dry rooms. Check whether your own plug is rated for indoor or outdoor use instead of assuming it can tolerate moisture or weather.
- Stop if the plug becomes unusually hot. Belkin says its Wemo Insight may feel warm but should not feel hot. If it is hot, unplug it, let it cool, and check for overload. If it remains hot while operating within capacity, discontinue use and contact support. Follow the temperature guidance for your exact model. Belkin’s Wemo Insight support page.
