There is no single best RPCS3 preset for every game. For a safe starting point, use the current build, keep default settings, choose Vulkan if your GPU supports it, and leave resolution scale at 100% before making small, game-specific changes. Check the game’s compatibility report and wiki page before adjusting CPU or advanced options.
Start with a safe RPCS3 baseline
- Update RPCS3 and keep defaults initially. RPCS3’s source configuration sets resolution scaling to 100% by default. That is a starting point, not a guarantee that a particular game will run smoothly at that scale. RPCS3 source configuration.
- Choose Vulkan when available. In RPCS3, open Configuration > GPU and set the renderer to Vulkan if your graphics card supports it. - Keep resolution scale at 100% first. If performance is stable and you want a sharper image, raise the scale gradually, checking the same scene after each change. A higher scale can increase GPU work, and the result varies by title and hardware. RPCS3 quickstart guide.
- Check the game’s compatibility entry. Search the RPCS3 compatibility database and open the game’s wiki page before changing CPU decoders or advanced options. Reports and classifications can change over time.
- Change one relevant setting at a time. Compare the same scene before and after each adjustment. This makes it easier to identify whether a change helped performance, image quality, or compatibility.
Which settings should you change?
RPCS3 exposes CPU options such as PPU and SPU decoders, preferred SPU threads, and SPU block size; GPU options such as renderer, resolution scale, frame limit, shader mode, and ZCULL accuracy; and advanced accuracy and clock controls. The configuration wiki lists these settings, but the existence of a performance-related option does not mean changing it will improve every game. RPCS3 configuration wiki.
- Renderer: Vulkan is the recommended baseline when supported by the GPU. If Vulkan is unavailable or causes a title-specific problem, use the game’s guidance rather than assuming another renderer is universally faster.
- Resolution scale: Start at 100%; increase in small steps only if the game remains stable and you want more visual detail.
- CPU and accuracy options: Leave them at defaults unless the specific game page recommends a change. Such options can trade correctness or stability against speed.
- Clock scale: Avoid casual global changes. RPCS3’s configuration source warns that changing clock scale from 100% may affect game speed unexpectedly. RPCS3 source configuration.
Use per-game settings for fixes
A setting that fixes one game can break or slow another. When a game page recommends an unusual adjustment, apply it only to that title with a custom configuration instead of changing the global configuration. Examples of why game-specific advice matters
- Journey: Its wiki page discusses sensitivity to low frame rates and Vblank changes in the context of that game. Those notes are not a general recommendation for other titles. Journey configuration page.
- Resonance of Fate: Its wiki page describes using the SPU interpreter to work around a freeze, with a substantial performance cost. That workaround is specific to this title; it is not a baseline setting. Resonance of Fate configuration page.
How to judge whether a change is worthwhile
Compare each change against the same scene and consider four separate outcomes:

- Performance and stability: Does play become smoother without introducing stutters or crashes?
- Visual quality: Does the image improve enough to justify any performance cost?
- Game correctness: Do rendering, audio, controls, and progression still work as expected?
- Scope: Is the option global, or can it be restricted to the one game that needs it?
Do not assume a particular FPS increase from Vulkan, a guaranteed gain from lowering resolution, or an optimal SPU thread count. Outcomes depend on the game, RPCS3 build, CPU, GPU, and settings; the official guidance cited here does not establish universal benchmark figures.
