For Android gaming, start by deciding whether the game needs to use the VPN. If it does not, exclude it from the VPN as a first test; if it must stay protected or use a VPN-only route, compare nearby servers and the protocols your VPN app offers. Always-on VPN and blocking connections outside the VPN are coverage controls, not proven ways to lower ping.
Which settings should you check first?
- App exclusion: If the game does not need the VPN, test routing it outside the tunnel while leaving other apps on the VPN. This can avoid VPN-related routing effects on gameplay, but the game’s traffic will no longer be protected by that VPN.
- Server choice: If the game must use the VPN, compare nearby endpoints using the latency shown in the VPN app or the game’s own ping display. A server’s name or stated location does not guarantee the fastest route.
- Protocol: If your VPN app lets you choose a protocol, compare the available options under the same conditions. No single protocol is established as the universal best choice for Android gaming.
- Always-on and block-outside-VPN: Use these for connection continuity or to prevent traffic from bypassing the tunnel, not as speed tweaks.
- Packet-size options: Only investigate a setting such as PIA’s Small Packets when the app offers it and you are troubleshooting a packet-size or connection problem.
Should you exclude the game from the VPN?
App exclusion, also called split tunneling, lets selected traffic bypass the VPN while other traffic continues through it. Android’s documentation describes include routes and, on Android 13, exclude routes; the feature’s availability and controls depend on Android and the VPN app. Google’s Pixel VPN help gives a multiplayer game as an example of an app to exclude when avoiding VPN latency effects on gameplay. See Android’s split-tunneling documentation and Google Pixel VPN app exclusions.
Exclusion is not automatically the right choice: the game’s traffic will travel outside the VPN. Keep it tunneled if your privacy needs, access requirements, or network setup depend on the game using the VPN. Not every provider’s Android app supports excluding individual apps, so check its current instructions.
How do you compare VPN servers fairly?
If the game needs the VPN, test endpoints that are geographically and network-wise close to the game route. Compare the VPN app’s latency figure, if available, with the ping shown in the game. Server location is a starting point, not a promise of performance: the route between your device, VPN server, and game server matters.

- All-Day Battery: Stay powered all day with our 5,000mAh battery, and recharge in a flash with our 66W quick charge technology that tops you up from 0 to 100% in just 20 minutes.
- Keep the same device, access network, game, and approximate time of day.
- Record the game’s ping or other relevant connection behavior with the VPN off, if that is a suitable and permitted comparison.
- Connect to a nearby VPN endpoint and record the same indicators; repeat with another nearby endpoint if available.
- Compare stability as well as ping, and choose based on your actual play rather than a server label alone.
Private Internet Access (PIA) recommends choosing a nearby server with lower displayed latency. Its Android instructions say those latency figures cannot be updated while connected: disconnect, select a lower-latency location, then reconnect. That is PIA-specific guidance; server displays and switching procedures differ among providers. PIA’s latency troubleshooting instructions explain its procedure.
Which VPN protocol should you use?
Test protocol choices only if your VPN app exposes them. PIA’s Android setup documentation lists WireGuard and OpenVPN, and PIA recommends WireGuard for gaming and streaming. That recommendation describes PIA’s product guidance; it is not a controlled Android gaming benchmark or proof that WireGuard will outperform other protocols on every phone, carrier, VPN, or game. PIA’s Android setup guide lists its options.

For a useful comparison, keep the endpoint and network conditions the same while switching protocols, then compare in-game ping and stability. If your provider does not offer a protocol selector, there is nothing to change in this category.
Do always-on VPN or blocking outside connections reduce ping?
No latency benefit is established for these controls. Android’s always-on VPN keeps the VPN connection active, while the option to block connections without the VPN prevents traffic from going outside the tunnel if it is unavailable. They address continuity and traffic containment rather than route speed. Use them when that protection is what you need, understanding that a strict block can prevent online play if the VPN disconnects.

Google’s Android VPN setup help describes these controls and notes that availability can depend on whether you use an app. Android Enterprise documentation also describes version- and management-dependent behavior: Set up VPN on Android devices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When is a small-packet setting worth testing?
PIA’s Android support describes a Small Packets option for situations where larger packets may be split or resent. Treat it as a provider-specific troubleshooting toggle, not a standard gaming optimization. Test it only if your VPN app offers the setting and you have a packet-size or connection problem to investigate; do not assume it will lower ping.

Why might the steps or settings look different?
VPN controls vary by app, device, Android release, and—in managed environments—organization policy. Google notes that some Android VPN steps require newer versions, and Android Enterprise documents version- and management-dependent behavior. Follow your VPN provider’s current Android instructions and check your device’s Android version if a menu or option is missing. The general Android instructions are at Google Android Help.
