No: RPCS3 is not a supported app for an ordinary PS5, and the console does not play PS3 discs. RPCS3 is a computer-based PS3 emulator; Sony’s PS5 cloud-streaming options are a separate feature for selected games, not a way to run RPCS3. If you want to use RPCS3, you need a computer running an operating system supported by the project, suitable hardware and drivers for that build, and a game whose compatibility status meets your expectations.
Why RPCS3 does not run on a PS5
RPCS3’s published platforms are Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD. The project describes it as an open-source PlayStation 3 emulator and debugger, not as PS5 software. Its platform list does not include Sony’s console. See the RPCS3 project site for its current platform information.
Sony states that “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs” in its backward-compatibility guidance. That is a statement about standard PS5 disc support; it should not be stretched into a claim about every possible modified-console configuration. It also does not make RPCS3 installable on a normal PS5.
Three different ways people mean “play PS3 games”

Sony’s streaming library is limited to selected games and availability can change. Streaming should not be confused with playing a PS3 disc or installing an emulator. Sony’s PS Portal FAQ also says PS4 and PS3 games cannot currently be streamed to Portal; that device-specific restriction does not establish the full game selection available on PS5.

What you need to run RPCS3 on a computer
- A supported operating system: RPCS3 lists Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD. Confirm that the current build supports your specific OS and architecture on the project site.
- Suitable hardware and graphics drivers: Requirements depend on the build and architecture. Consult the current requirements for the build you plan to use rather than treating one platform’s requirements as universal.
- A compatible game: RPCS3’s compatibility database has distinct status categories and changes over time. Search for the exact title in the compatibility list and read its current entry before deciding whether its status is acceptable to you.
ARM64 Linux requirements are build-specific
In a December 9, 2024 article, RPCS3 described requirements for its Linux ARM64 build: an ARMv8.2-A CPU, at least 8 GB of RAM, and a GPU and driver capable of OpenGL 4.3 or Vulkan. These figures apply to that described ARM64 Linux build; they are not general requirements for x64 Windows or every other RPCS3 build. Check a game before choosing hardware
- Open the RPCS3 compatibility list and search for the exact game title or its identifier.
- Read the current status category and the entry’s notes. A game’s presence in the list does not by itself guarantee that it will run well or meet your expectations.
- Check the current RPCS3 requirements for your chosen operating system, architecture, and build, including graphics-driver needs.
- Only then decide whether an existing computer is suitable or whether another setup is worth considering. Do not assume a machine that meets an ARM64 Linux requirement set will satisfy a different build’s requirements.
The compatibility list and project pages are the live references: software support, build availability, and individual game status can change.

If you want PS3 games on a PS5
Check Sony’s current cloud-streaming catalog and service conditions for the specific game and your region. If the title is not available through a Sony feature you can use, RPCS3 is a computer alternative—not a PS5 workaround. Neither Sony’s PS5 disc guidance nor the RPCS3 platform list establishes that the two options have identical libraries or performance.
