For a large LEGO collection, separate pieces according to how you use them, then choose storage that makes those pieces easy to find. Keep loose bricks dry, away from heat and direct sunlight; display built models on stable, well-sized shelves or in cases when you want to limit dust. For cleaning, disassemble models and hand-wash the elements rather than using household machines or high heat.
Choose a sorting system that fits the collection
There is no single best way to sort LEGO pieces. The LEGO Group lists sorting by color, set, size, or type as common approaches. Choose based on what you need to retrieve: builders often benefit from grouping useful part types, while keeping pieces together by set or project helps preserve those collections as units. Sorting by color can suit collections where color is the main way you search.
For a large collection, you can combine approaches: keep complete sets or active projects together, and sort general building stock into categories you use often. Avoid making categories so narrow that maintaining the system becomes more work than finding pieces.
Match storage to the pieces and how often you use them
LEGO names clear storage bins, tool or craft boxes, sandwich bags, plastic drawer systems, food storage containers, LEGO Storage bricks, and minifigure display cases as possible storage options. It does not specify a best brand, container capacity, or dimensions. Choose organizers by how they fit your space, how visible the contents are, and how frequently you need access.

Protect bricks from heat and sunlight
The LEGO Group advises against storing bricks in direct sunlight or where the temperature exceeds 104°F (40°C), warning that they may become brittle or discolored over time. Treat this as a manufacturer caution threshold, not a target storage temperature or a guarantee that lower temperatures prevent all aging. Display models on stable shelves or in a suitable case
Before moving a large model, check that the route is clear and that the shelf or case can accommodate its footprint and height. A stable surface and an easy-to-access display make it simpler to handle the model carefully and clean around it.
An enclosed case can reduce dust exposure and provide a physical barrier, while an open shelf is easier to access. Compare the internal dimensions, stability, cleaning access, and materials before choosing. LEGO lists display cases for minifigures, but that does not establish that a particular case is suitable for a large model.

Do not assume ordinary glass or acrylic blocks ultraviolet light. The Library of Congress identifies light damage as cumulative and also notes temperature, relative humidity, pollutants, and security as display considerations. Keep displays away from direct sunlight; rely on UV-protection claims only when the specific product documents them. (Library of Congress collection-care guidance)
Control dust without scratching the plastic
Dust displays periodically as needed, using a gentle approach rather than scrubbing. A soft brush or careful dry wiping may help with light dust, but soft-brush dusting is a cautious suggestion drawn from general plastics-conservation guidance, not a LEGO-tested cleaning procedure. The Canadian Conservation Institute warns that abrasive dirt can scratch plastics and recommends careful brushing, vacuuming, or dry wiping when needed. Avoid hard bristles and forceful rubbing. Wash bricks by hand when dusting is not enough
For a full wash, LEGO Education’s 2020 guidance says to take the elements apart and hand-clean them with a soft cloth or sponge, soap, and water no hotter than 104°F (40°C). Let pieces dry without an oven, microwave, hairdryer, dishwasher, or washing machine.
