To protect a large LEGO display model, keep it under a fitted cover or in a display case when practical. For dust already on the build, use a clean, very soft brush and light strokes; work from the top down, and support delicate sections rather than pressing on them. This brush technique is collector advice, not a dusting procedure validated or published by LEGO.
How can you prevent dust from settling on a large LEGO model?
A display case or dust cover can reduce direct exposure. LEGO lists display cases among storage options, but its guidance does not establish that a particular case will fit a large model. Measure the assembled build—including wings, antennas, sails, foliage, and other projections—and compare those dimensions with the case’s usable interior. A generic minifigure case should not be assumed to fit.

How do you dust the model without knocking pieces off?
A secondary collector guide recommends soft brushes for built sets; LEGO’s reviewed care guidance does not prescribe a brush routine for fragile assembled models. Treat brushing as cautious practical advice, not a guaranteed-safe or official method.

- Choose a clean, very soft brush, such as a soft-bristled makeup or artist brush. No particular brand is established as tested or endorsed.
- Start at the highest surfaces and work downward so loosened dust does not land on areas you have already cleaned.
- Use light sweeping strokes rather than scrubbing. Let the brush touch the surface without pushing against it.
- When working near a delicate projection, support the nearby structure with your free hand if you can do so without disturbing other parts. Do not use the projection itself as a handle.
- Use a microfiber cloth only on broad, flat panels where it will not snag. Avoid dragging it across antennas, foliage, cables, or other delicate details.
The collector advice is summarized in iTechGuides’ cleaning guide. It does not provide controlled comparisons of tools or quantify the chance of breakage.
Should you use compressed air or a vacuum?
Neither is the default choice for a fragile model. Secondary advice mentions both, but airflow can dislodge small parts and suction can pull pieces away. If you are experienced and choose to use either, treat it as a higher-risk option: keep the force low, test away from fragile details, and stop if any element shifts. A brush gives you more direct control over contact and pressure.

What if dry dusting is not enough?
LEGO’s consumer cleaning instructions are for LEGO pieces, not a recommendation to wash a large assembled display model. If a part needs more than dusting, separate pieces where feasible and clean them by hand. LEGO says to use water no hotter than 104°F / 40°C and a soft cloth or sponge; mild detergent is optional, followed by a clear-water rinse. LEGO states: “We recommend that you clean your LEGO pieces by hand using water no hotter than 104°F / 40°C and a soft cloth or sponge.” The page does not identify an individual speaker or publication date. LEGO warns against washing machines and dishwashers, and against drying with an oven, microwave, or hair dryer. It also advises against direct sunlight during drying because excessive heat can deform bricks. LEGO Education separately advises taking elements apart before cleaning and warns that disinfectants can damage decorations, cloud transparent pieces, or cause cracks and crazing.
