A mechanical keyboard feels satisfying when its switches, sound, and overall board feel suit the way you type and the place you use it. Start by deciding whether you prefer a smooth press, a tactile bump, or an audible click; then compare force, travel, noise, and the consistency of the complete keyboard. No switch type is best for everyone.

Which switch feedback do you prefer?

Mechanical switches are commonly grouped by how they feel and sound as you press them. These categories narrow the choices, but individual models can still differ in force, travel, and the shape or position of their feedback.

Switch type What you feel and hear May suit you if…
Linear The key moves smoothly without a tactile bump or built-in click. You prefer uninterrupted movement. Some typists, however, find linear switches too sensitive.
Tactile You feel a resistance bump during the press, without the distinct click mechanism of a clicky switch. You want physical feedback as the key actuates. The bump’s position and strength vary by model.
Clicky A tactile bump is paired with an audible click. You like hearing confirmation from each press and can use the keyboard without disturbing others.

Use your experience with a familiar keyboard as a starting point: try tactile samples if you like a noticeable bump, linear samples if you prefer a smooth press, or clicky samples if sound is part of the feedback you want. Those are ways to narrow a shortlist, not rules about which switch you should use.

How force and travel change the feel

A switch label alone does not tell you how a key will feel. Compare its specified actuation force, how far it moves before registering (pre-travel or actuation distance), and its total travel before bottoming out. Tactile switches also differ in where the bump occurs. Specifications help distinguish models, but a force figure cannot predict comfort for every typist.

The examples below are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent findings about comfort. Corsair’s Cherry MX figures are from a page updated in 2025; the Gateron specifications are from product pages reviewed in 2026. Gateron uses operating-force figures, while Corsair labels its values actuation force, so the force labels should not be treated as a perfectly standardized, direct comfort comparison.

Switch example Force Pre-travel / actuation distance Total travel Source and qualification
Cherry MX Red 45 g actuation force 2.0 mm 4.0 mm Corsair product specifications, updated 2025
Cherry MX Brown 55 g actuation force 2.0 mm 4.0 mm Corsair product specifications, updated 2025
Cherry MX Blue 60 g actuation force 2.2 mm 4.0 mm Corsair product specifications, updated 2025
Gateron Smoothie Linear 40±10 gf operating force 2.0±0.6 mm 3.6±0.2 mm Gateron product page, reviewed 2026
Gateron Milky Yellow Pro 50±15 gf operating force 2.0±0.6 mm 4.0 mm Gateron product page, reviewed 2026
MSI STRIKE 600 V2 Kailh Midnight Pro Silent Tactile 45 gf operation force; 55 gf tactile bump 1.9 mm 3.7 mm MSI product page reviewed 2026; MSI claims sound below 35 dB, not an independent cross-brand test

For example, Cherry MX Red and Brown have the same published actuation distance and total travel in Corsair’s specifications, but different actuation-force figures and switch feedback. That is why “linear,” “tactile,” or a single force number is not enough to establish whether a switch will suit you.

Why a keyboard’s sound is not just its switch

Sound comes from the assembled keyboard and the way it is used. Gateron identifies switch construction, plate, PCB, case, keycaps, and typing force as contributors to the final sound. A regular linear switch is not automatically silent: key movement can produce noise when a key bottoms out or returns to the top.

If you type in a shared or quiet space, consider a switch specifically described as silent and listen to the whole board if possible. A manufacturer’s decibel claim, such as MSI’s below-35-dB figure for the cited STRIKE 600 V2 switch, is not a comparable independent measurement across brands or keyboards.

How to choose a satisfying keyboard before buying

  1. Identify what you like or dislike. Notice whether your familiar keyboard feels too smooth, too resistant, too loud, or lacking in feedback.
  2. Try samples when possible. RTINGS suggests testing display keyboards, attending keyboard meetups, or using a switch tester. A tester is useful for comparing individual switches, but it cannot fully reproduce the sound or overall feel of those switches mounted in a complete keyboard.
  3. Compare the important details. Check feedback type, force, pre-travel, total travel, tactile-bump position, sound in your setting, layout, and whether the board supports switch replacement.
  4. Judge the whole board. Pay attention to whether the keyboard feels consistent across keys and whether its sound and movement work for your typing. The switch is one part of that experience, not a guarantee of a preferred board feel.

Replacing switches? Check compatibility first

Before buying replacement switches, confirm that your keyboard supports switch replacement and that the specific switches match its hardware. Check the mounting and PCB, pin count, lighting arrangement if relevant, and whether the keyboard uses standard or low-profile switches. Compatibility varies by keyboard, so do not assume that a switch will fit simply because it is mechanical.

Lubrication is an optional enthusiast modification, not a requirement for every switch. Gateron presents factory lubrication as a convenience and consistency feature, while noting that some users modify switches to pursue a particular sound or resistance. Only consider opening or lubricating switches if you want that customization and understand the work involved.
