USD1 is a U.S.-dollar-pegged digital token issued by BitGo and branded by World Liberty Financial. It is designed to be redeemable for one U.S. dollar, but direct redemption is limited to eligible BitGo account holders; other holders rely on exchanges or custodians, where the trading price may differ from $1. USD1 is not legal tender or an insured bank deposit.

What USD1 is—and who is behind it

USD1 is a stablecoin: a token intended to track the value of a reference asset, in this case the U.S. dollar. BitGo’s terms identify BitGo as the issuer and the party that processes initial purchases and redemptions. World Liberty Financial owns the USD1 brand and provides certain services. These roles are distinct; World Liberty’s branding does not make it the current issuer under BitGo’s terms. World Liberty Financial’s FAQ and BitGo’s USD1 terms describe the arrangement.

BitGo’s terms say, “USD1 tokens are not money or legal tender.” That is the wording of the contract, not a general legal opinion about every use of the token.

How USD1 is intended to maintain its dollar value

BitGo’s terms provide for reserve assets with an aggregate dollar value at least equal to the outstanding USD1 at the end of each business day. Eligible reserve assets may include cash, short-term U.S. Treasury bills, government money-market funds, and specified Treasury-backed overnight repurchase agreements. The terms say reserve assets are held separately from BitGo’s own assets for USD1 users, subject to the terms and applicable regulatory requirements. This reserve design supports the redemption promise; it does not ensure that USD1 will trade for exactly $1 at every moment on every exchange.

What the August 2026 reserve report showed

For August 31, 2026, BitGo management reported 4,195,303,689 redeemable USD1 tokens outstanding and $4,195,716,067 in redemption assets—a reported surplus of $412,378. The assets consisted of $1,129,357,410 in demand-deposit cash and cash equivalents and $3,066,358,657 in government money-market funds at net asset value. The report said no time-locked, test, or access-restricted tokens were in the reporting period and that the reported tokens were eligible for redemption under the contractual terms.

KPMG LLP examined management’s assertion under the AICPA’s 2025 criteria for stablecoin reporting and said it was fairly stated, in all material respects. Its opinion applies to that assertion and the specified presentation and disclosure, not to every other item accompanying the report. These are figures dated August 31, 2026—not a live reserve balance or a guarantee of an exchange price. Read the August 2026 report. The BitGo attestation index listed reports through August 2026; whether a September report was published by October 7, 2026, is not established here.

How buying, holding, and redeeming USD1 work

Direct purchases and redemptions

Eligible BitGo account holders may request minting or redemption through a GoAccount, subject to BitGo’s services agreement, eligibility and compliance checks, possible transaction limits, and fees. A direct redemption is therefore not an unconditional right available to every wallet holder. Under BitGo’s terms, people without an eligible account cannot acquire or redeem USD1 directly with BitGo.

Exchanging through another provider

World Liberty Financial says holders may be able to exchange USD1 through platforms and custodians that support it. Those providers set their own availability and terms. A sale on a third-party platform is not the same as direct redemption with BitGo, and the market price can be above or below $1.

Interest and returns

USD1 itself does not pay holders interest or returns. BitGo’s terms say token holders are not entitled to interest earned on reserve assets. Any yield offered by a separate lending or other service would come with that provider’s own terms and risks; it is not a return built into USD1.

Where USD1 can move—and what to check before transferring

The August 2026 reserve report says USD1 was minted and redeemed on Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Solana, Tron, Aptos, Tempo, and Canton. BitGo’s terms describe supported blockchains as Ethereum, BNB Chain, and additional networks BitGo may specify. Network support can change, and names such as BNB Chain and BNB Smart Chain may be used differently across services. Before sending tokens, confirm the supported network and exact token contract using current official information, and check that the receiving wallet or service supports that same network and token.

  • On-chain transfers may be irreversible; verify the destination address and network before confirming.
  • BitGo’s terms allow access to be frozen or restricted in specified circumstances, including legal process or compliance concerns.
  • Third-party platforms may set their own withdrawal, deposit, and trading rules, separate from BitGo’s direct redemption terms.

What USD1 is intended to be used for

World Liberty Financial promotes USD1 for cross-border payments, access to digital dollars, and DeFi or capital-market uses. Its FAQ describes lending and borrowing in its DeFi protocol as a future feature once operational and subject to eligibility. These are stated use cases and plans, not proof that each service is currently available to every holder. Check the relevant provider’s current access rules and terms before relying on a particular use. World Liberty Financial’s USD1 page and its FAQ provide its descriptions.

What the OCC decision means for USD1

On August 14, 2026, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency granted preliminary conditional approval for the proposed World Liberty Trust Company, National Association. The OCC decision says the proposed bank plans to issue USD1 to institutional clients and assume issuer and custodian roles from BitGo. It also makes clear that final approval and authorization to begin business depend on meeting pre-opening requirements. The decision is therefore not evidence that the transfer had already occurred or that the proposed bank was operating. Read OCC Corporate Decision #1385.

The OCC decision says the proposed bank would not be FDIC-insured. A proposed trust-bank charter does not make USD1 a bank deposit or give token holders FDIC deposit insurance. The OCC decision also discusses statutory and compliance conditions, including conformity with the GENIUS Act and future implementing rules.

Key points to weigh before using USD1

  • Issuer and access: BitGo is the issuer identified in the current terms; direct minting and redemption are restricted to eligible account holders.
  • Reserves: The August 2026 report showed a small surplus on its measurement date, but a dated reserve examination does not guarantee a stable market price or establish today’s balance.
  • Trading and transfers: Third-party prices and service terms can vary, and blockchain transfers may be irreversible.
  • Regulatory status: The proposed World Liberty Trust Company had preliminary conditional approval in the cited OCC decision, not final authorization to operate.
