Saving inside a browser-based Windows 98 emulator is not always the same as downloading a file to your computer. The steps depend on the site: in 98.js, for example, files dropped onto the desktop go into a virtual filesystem, and the project documentation does not specify a universal export or screenshot command. To keep work, use the app’s available Save or Save As option, check whether the browser downloads a copy, and verify it in a folder on your computer. For screenshots, use your browser or operating system’s screen-capture feature.
First, identify which Windows 98 site you are using
There is no single save procedure shared by every browser-based Windows 98 experience. Some recreate a desktop, while others describe browser-local or account-based storage. Find the site or project name before relying on a particular File menu, download control, or persistence behavior.
This guide uses 98.js as its main example. Its README describes a web-based Windows 98 desktop remake with Notepad, Paint, and Windows Explorer, and says, “Drop files onto the desktop, and they’ll be stored in a virtual filesystem”. That virtual filesystem is part of the emulator; it does not by itself mean a file has been downloaded to your computer.
How to save a file from the emulator to your computer
- Open or place the file in the emulator. In 98.js, dropping a file onto the desktop stores it in the virtual filesystem. The project documentation does not establish how long that state persists.
- Open it in the appropriate app. For a text document, use Notepad; for an image, use Paint. These apps are listed among 98.js’s included components.
- Look for Save or Save As in the app’s File menu. If the app offers a browser download, select a destination folder in the browser prompt and confirm the download. These are general steps, not a verified 98.js export sequence: the reviewed README does not document exact export controls.
- Check the computer’s download location or the folder you selected. Seeing the file in the emulator is not proof that it exists as an ordinary file on the host computer.
- Open the exported copy outside the emulator. Verify that it is readable and contains the work you expect before treating it as a backup.
JS Paint describes itself as a browser-based Paint remake and says it is included in a web-based Windows 98 version. Its “Open and save files like a native app” feature description refers to the desktop version; it does not establish that every browser-hosted Windows 98 environment has the same save flow. See the JS Paint about page for that distinction.

How to save a screenshot
Capture the emulator window with your browser’s or operating system’s screen-capture feature, then save the resulting image in a folder on your computer. The exact key combination and prompts vary by browser and operating system, so use the capture method for your setup rather than assuming the emulator has a particular screenshot button.
The reviewed 98.js README does not document a built-in screenshot-export procedure. If a different site offers a screenshot control, follow that site’s own instructions and still check where the image was saved.

What emulator storage does—and does not—guarantee
Browser projects describe different ways of retaining state, and those descriptions should not be treated as interchangeable. Desktop98 describes saving desktop configuration and game-related state for signed-in accounts. Wine-Assembly says program settings and scores stay in that project’s browser local storage. Neither description establishes how 98.js stores or exports files, or how long any particular site will retain them.

- For important work, download an independent copy and verify it outside the emulator.
- A file visible in a virtual desktop is not automatically a host-computer backup.
- Avoid clearing site data until important files have been exported. Browser-held state may be affected, but the exact effect depends on the site.
If you cannot find the saved file
- It is still visible in the emulator: it may only be in that site’s virtual filesystem or browser-held state. Return to the app’s Save or Save As option and check for a host download.
- The browser asked where to save: check the chosen folder. If you accepted the default, check the browser’s configured download location.
- No download appeared: the app or site may not have exported a host file through that action. The 98.js README does not establish an exact export workflow, so do not assume a particular menu item exists.
- You need a visual record rather than an editable file: capture the emulator screen using the host browser or operating system and verify the resulting image in the destination folder.
