How do I know if my Kindle is up to date?
- Identify the exact model and generation. Use Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader User and Quick Start Guides page for model-identification guidance. Do not rely on appearance or age alone when choosing a model entry or software download.
- Find the installed software version. On the Kindle, open Settings and look for the device’s software version. The precise menu wording can vary by model.
- Compare the version with Amazon’s listing. On Amazon’s software updates page, locate the entry for your exact model and compare its listed version with the one on your device. Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance also tells owners to compare version numbers with this page.
If your installed version matches the version Amazon lists for that model, it is up to date according to the current listing. Amazon’s model-specific version table can change, so consult the live page rather than relying on an old version number quoted elsewhere.
What if Amazon lists a newer version?
Amazon says Kindle software updates are free and normally download and install automatically when the device is connected wirelessly. If the Kindle has not updated automatically, first connect it to Wi-Fi and allow it time to receive the update. Amazon also provides manual downloads on the software updates page.
Before using a manual download, confirm the exact model and follow Amazon’s instructions for that model. A file intended for another Kindle model is not a safe substitute just because the devices look similar.

Does my Kindle still receive security updates?
Check the device-specific date on Amazon’s security updates page. Amazon states that it will provide security updates until at least four years after a Kindle was bought new from Amazon, with Amazon as the seller on Amazon.com, or until the later date listed for that device. This is a minimum policy threshold for qualifying purchases, not a promise that every device receives updates for exactly four years.
The purchase terms matter: do not assume the same baseline applies to a used Kindle or a purchase from another marketplace or seller. Check the date Amazon lists for the specific device and apply the stated purchase conditions.

Software updates and security support are not the same check
The software update list tells you which software version Amazon lists for a model. The security page tells you Amazon’s stated security-support period for a device, subject to its listed date and purchase terms. A current software version by itself does not establish the device’s security-support end date, and a security-support date does not tell you whether the installed software is current.
