Start with the free, reversible fixes: give your mini PC open space, clear dust and obstructions from its vents, and check whether a busy app is keeping the fan loud. Change fan settings only when the manufacturer documents them for your exact model. A damaged or persistently noisy fan—or overheating that continues after these checks—needs model-specific support.
1. Give the mini PC room to breathe
Move the computer out of a closed cabinet or cramped spot. Make sure it is not pressed against a wall, covered, or sitting on fabric or accumulated dust that blocks its intake or exhaust. Intel’s guidance for a NUC over-temperature warning begins with checking for blocked vents and placing the unit in a well-ventilated area; use the same airflow principle for other mini PCs, while following their own manuals: Intel NUC over-temperature troubleshooting.
If you need to move or inspect the device, power it down first when necessary to do so safely.
2. Clean the vents and inspect the fan
Look for dust or anything else obstructing the external vents. Intel recommends checking a noisy NUC for obstructions, cleaning its radiator with compressed air, and looking for physical damage. Beelink likewise advises inspecting and cleaning vents and fans. Cleaning methods differ by chassis, so follow the instructions for your exact model rather than assuming one method is safe for every mini PC.

Grinding, ticking, squealing, knocking, or rattling can indicate an obstruction or physical damage. If the sound continues after basic checks, consult the manufacturer’s support for your model. A replacement fan is not universally compatible: confirm the exact model and part with the manufacturer or a reliable parts supplier before buying or fitting one.

3. Check whether an application is keeping the fan busy
When the fan gets loud, open Task Manager in Windows or the equivalent activity monitor in your operating system. Look for sustained CPU use by an application; Intel identifies high CPU utilization as one possible reason a NUC fan runs at high speed and recommends sorting processes by CPU usage. Investigate or close a process only if you understand what it does. A loud fan does not by itself prove that software is the cause.

4. Change fan settings only with model-specific guidance
Fan controls and BIOS menus vary by product. Intel’s procedure for a NUC over-temperature warning includes entering Advanced > Cooling and trying Balanced or Cool; it also discusses loading BIOS defaults and updating to the latest BIOS. Those are instructions for the covered NUC procedure, not universal steps for every mini PC. ASUS also notes that available fan-control options vary by model in its NUC Visual BIOS fan-control guidance.

Look up the instructions for your exact model and BIOS before changing a setting. Do not lower fan speed without monitoring temperatures and confirming the manufacturer supports the change: quieter operation can mean less cooling capacity, and there is no single safe temperature target established here for all mini PCs.
5. Treat external cooling as a conditional aid
A USB-powered fan or ventilated stand may be worth considering if the computer’s location restricts airflow. It will not clear an obstruction inside the chassis or repair a failing internal fan. Keep the mini PC’s own intake and exhaust clear, and check the accessory’s fit, mounting or power requirements, and added noise. Manufacturer guidance supports unobstructed ventilation, but it does not establish that aftermarket accessories produce a particular temperature or noise reduction.

If the internal fan appears damaged or keeps making mechanical noise, address that fault through model-specific service guidance rather than relying on an external fan.

Seek support for the exact mini PC model if it continues overheating after placement, cleaning, and workload checks; if a fan sounds damaged or remains mechanically noisy; or if you are unsure whether a BIOS change, disassembly, or replacement part is appropriate. Intel’s NUC over-temperature warning says: “Warning: System has recovered from an over-temperature condition. Please ensure proper airflow before continuing”. Treat a recurring warning as a reason to recheck airflow and follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions.
