DJI Flip supports palm, voice, DJI Fly app and remote-controller operation. DJI lists the RC 2, RC-N3 and RC-N2 as compatible. It can follow a person and capture automated shots, but it has no Manual flight-control mode, and intelligent tracking does not include obstacle avoidance. Here is how the controls, camera settings and flight modes differ—and what to check before relying on automated flight.
How can you control the DJI Flip?
DJI lists four control methods: palm control, the DJI Fly mobile app, voice control and a remote controller. The best choice depends on whether you want quick, hands-free shots or conventional piloting.
- Palm control: Use the drone’s palm controls for supported flight and shooting functions.
- DJI Fly app: The app provides supported control and shooting features. Its virtual joysticks are intended for fine positioning or commanding Return to Home; DJI says they do not offer the same control experience as a conventional controller. App-controlled flight is limited to a maximum height of 30 m and a maximum distance of 50 m, according to DJI’s product FAQ.
- Voice control: DJI lists voice operation as a control method. Consult the current app and product instructions for supported commands and setup.
- Remote controller: Choose this approach for conventional piloting. DJI lists three compatible controllers, described below.
DJI Fly is the app used with Flip. DJI says the RC 2 has DJI Fly pre-installed; the retrieved product information does not establish current bundle contents for every region or retailer.
Which remote controllers work with DJI Flip?
DJI’s current product FAQ lists the DJI RC 2, DJI RC-N3 and DJI RC-N2 as compatible. Compatibility alone does not establish that a controller is included with a particular Flip package, or that the controllers have the same display, phone requirements or features. Check the exact regional bundle and controller listing before purchase.

What tracking and automated shooting modes are available?
DJI lists different mode options depending on the control method. The names below describe automated shooting or tracking features; they are not the same thing as the aircraft’s Normal, Cine and Sport flight modes.
| Control method | Modes DJI lists |
|---|---|
| Palm or DJI Fly app | Follow, Dronie, Circle, Rocket, Spotlight and Custom |
| Remote controller | Multiple QuickShots modes; see DJI’s FAQ for current details |
Custom and DirectionTrack
Custom defaults to DirectionTrack after activation. DJI says you must connect to DJI Fly over Wi-Fi and complete the app tutorial to unlock the feature; after that, Helix or Boomerang can be selected in the app. DirectionTrack initially moves backward to a preset distance, so check that the space behind the aircraft is clear. DJI also states that DirectionTrack does not support automatic braking.

Can DJI Flip safely follow you?
DJI says the Flip uses visual algorithms to follow a subject’s movement trajectory, supports human-subject tracking only and has a manufacturer-stated maximum tracking speed of 12 m/s. That speed is not a safety guarantee. DJI explicitly says intelligent functions, including Subject Tracking, do not support obstacle avoidance.
DJI says obstacle braking is available in Normal and Cine flight modes and during Return to Home, but not as a protection layer for intelligent functions. The FAQ warns that at tracking speeds of 3 m/s or faster, braking distance may be insufficient to avoid a collision. Use tracking only where the full route is clear, keep the aircraft in view and be ready to intervene; do not rely on it to stop for people, trees, wires or other obstacles.

- Compatibility: DJI Flip, DJI Neo, DJI Mini 4 Pro, DJI Air 3, DJI Air 3S
Does DJI Flip have Manual mode?
No, not for flight control. DJI says the aircraft does not support Manual mode flight. That is distinct from manual camera adjustments: DJI Fly lets you set shutter speed, ISO and white balance manually.
What video and camera settings does it support?
DJI lists a 1/1.3-inch sensor, 4K/60fps HDR video, optional 10-bit D-Log M and 4K 100fps slow motion. DJI says HDR is enabled by default for video at 60fps or lower. These are manufacturer-stated capabilities; settings and available recording options may depend on the selected mode. See the DJI Flip specifications and FAQ for the product’s current details.

- Brand New-Never Used(Replacement unit doesn't come in retail box)
- Model RC231 Mode 2 for North America

How do flight modes differ from shooting modes?
Normal, Cine and Sport are flight modes; Follow, Dronie, Circle, Rocket, Spotlight, Custom, Helix and Boomerang are tracking or automated shooting options. DJI specifies that obstacle braking operates in Normal and Cine modes and during Return to Home. Do not assume a shooting mode inherits obstacle avoidance simply because the aircraft is in a particular flight mode.
DJI’s specifications give a maximum horizontal speed of 12 m/s in Sport mode under specified windless, sea-level test conditions. Its separate 12 m/s maximum tracking figure is a manufacturer-stated tracking limit, not a collision-safe operating recommendation.

What should you know about flight time, weight and file transfer?
- Flight time: DJI lists up to 31 minutes. The manufacturer measured this in a controlled wind-tunnel setting with specified camera and flight conditions; actual flight time can vary. See DJI’s specifications.
- Weight: DJI lists a standard takeoff weight under 249 g, including the Intelligent Flight Battery and a microSD card. DJI notes actual weight may vary. Weight alone does not determine whether a flight is exempt from local rules.
- QuickTransfer: DJI gives a maximum download speed of 30 MB/s under laboratory conditions, with little interference and in supported regions. Keeping the phone and drone within 2 m with no obstruction is DJI’s recommended setup for the best transfer experience; the stated maximum is not a real-world guarantee.
What rules apply to flying DJI Flip?
Rules depend on where and how you fly. In the United States, FAA guidance exempts drones weighing 0.55 lb (250 g) or less from registration only when flown under the Exception for Limited Recreational Operations. Drones required to be registered—or that are registered—must comply with Remote ID. See the FAA’s drone registration guidance; the weight figure by itself does not establish an exemption for commercial operations or other countries.
For US Part 107 operations, FAA guidance says an FPV operator must use a visual observer to keep the aircraft within unaided sight, and identifies beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations as among those requiring a waiver. Review current FAA Part 107 guidance and local airspace restrictions before flying.
