There is no universal long-term winner. Kobo has the clearer fit if you bring your own EPUBs, borrow from a participating library, or want repair parts for certain models. Kindle has a more explicit published security-update policy for qualifying purchases. Neither brand’s published support information establishes how many years its hardware will last, so the best choice depends on your library, book collection, country, and exact model.
What “easier to keep using” means
An e-reader can remain useful only if several things continue to work: the device itself, access to your books, the ability to add or borrow titles, and—when something breaks—an affordable way to repair it. Software security updates matter too, but an update date is not a hardware-life estimate.
The evidence supports a conditional comparison, not a measured brand-versus-brand lifespan result. Amazon publishes a minimum security-update commitment and dates for named models. Kobo documents format support, library borrowing, discontinued devices, and parts for selected readers. Neither set of sources measures comparative failure rates or physical survival in years.
How do Kindle and Kobo compare for long-term use?
| What matters | Kindle | Kobo |
|---|---|---|
| Published software support | Amazon says qualifying new devices bought from Amazon as seller on Amazon.com receive security updates for at least four years from purchase, or until a later model-specific date. The current table lists December 31, 2030 for Kindle Paperwhite Generation 12 (2024 release) and Kindle Generation 11 (2024 release). Amazon’s security-update policy | Kobo identifies discontinued and unsupported models but does not state a matching universal minimum update period. Kobo’s discontinued-device guidance |
| Using your own files | The sources reviewed do not establish an exhaustive Kindle format comparison. | Kobo lists EPUB, EPUB2, EPUB3, PDF, MOBI, TXT, HTML, RTF, CBZ, and CBR among supported formats, with model and DRM caveats. Kobo’s format list |
| Public-library borrowing | Availability depends on whether your library offers Kindle Books and whether the title you want is available in a compatible format. OverDrive’s e-reader guide | Newer supported Kobo e-readers can borrow through built-in OverDrive when the reader has internet access and the library participates. Kobo’s Libby guidance |

Which brand has clearer software support?
Amazon publishes a minimum for qualifying purchases
Amazon’s stated policy is: “We’ll support your device with software security updates until at least four years from when you bought it new, from Amazon as the seller, on Amazon.com (or until the date stated below if later).” The seller, purchase condition, and marketplace are part of that commitment; it should not be generalized to every retailer, country, or used device. Amazon lists December 31, 2030 as the security-update date for the Kindle Paperwhite Generation 12 (2024 release) and Kindle Generation 11 (2024 release). See Amazon’s current policy and model table.

- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.

- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
That date concerns software security updates, not the expected useful life of the device. Amazon cautions: “Please note the update period is not a guarantee as to how long your device will last.” A Kindle may remain physically usable beyond its listed update date, but the date alone does not establish how long it will work.
Kobo support depends on the model
Kobo says it discontinues support for earlier products as it focuses on current and future devices. Its guidance names Kobo mini, Kobo WiFi, and Kobo Original among models that are no longer supported, and provides update guidance for some additional older readers. It also says Kobo library items remain accessible. This is evidence that support status varies by model, not that all Kobo devices receive updates indefinitely. Check Kobo’s device-specific guidance.

What the difference does—and does not—show
Amazon’s published minimum is more explicit than the Kobo support information cited here. It does not prove that Kindle hardware lasts longer, nor does the evidence provide a directly comparable Kobo update duration. For a purchase decision, check the named model’s support details rather than treating either brand’s reputation or a software date as a lifespan guarantee.
Which reader is easier for library borrowing?
Kobo: direct borrowing through OverDrive
On a compatible Kobo, OverDrive is built in for supported newer models, including Clara BW. To borrow directly, you need a valid public-library card, a participating library that supports Libby, a compatible Kobo eReader, and an internet connection to borrow and sync books. You can add the card and borrow from the reader’s OverDrive section. Kobo’s Libby instructions explain the process and requirements.

- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Direct borrowing is convenient only if your local library and the title you want are supported. Library catalogs, country availability, and title formats vary, so check your library’s catalog before choosing a device on this basis. Kobo notes that after updating to software version 6.0 or later, you may need to add your library account again.
Kindle: confirm that your library offers Kindle Books
Kindle library borrowing is not a simple yes-or-no feature across all public libraries. OverDrive directs Kindle e-reader users to its separate Kindle Books instructions; whether borrowing works for you depends on your country, library, and the format offered for the specific title. OverDrive’s e-reader guide explains its supported workflows, including transferring some library e-books to compatible readers through Adobe Digital Editions on a Windows or Mac computer.

Before buying either brand for library use, search your own library’s catalog for books you actually plan to read and confirm the available format and device instructions. A library’s general e-book service does not by itself establish that every title can be borrowed on every e-reader.
Which reader handles personal files with less friction?
Kobo officially lists EPUB, EPUB2, EPUB3, PDF, FlePub, MOBI, TXT, HTML, RTF, CBZ, and CBR among formats supported by its eReader or desktop software. Some older Kobo models do not support EPUB3, so a format listed by Kobo is not necessarily supported on every generation. See Kobo’s format details.

DRM can add a transfer step. Adobe DRM-protected EPUB or PDF files require Adobe Digital Editions to transfer them to a Kobo; Kobo says Social DRM files can be read without ADE. That distinction matters when getting books from a store or service outside Kobo: an EPUB file extension does not guarantee that the file will open without extra handling. Kobo explains its DRM requirements.
If your existing collection is mostly EPUBs or comic files, Kobo’s published support for those formats makes it a natural candidate. The available sources do not provide an exhaustive, directly comparable Kindle format list, so they do not establish a universal format advantage beyond Kobo’s documented support. They also do not settle how easily purchased, DRM-protected books can be migrated between ecosystems; check the terms and transfer options for the specific books you own.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you repair a Kobo or Kindle if it breaks?
iFixit’s Kobo Repair Hub lists guides and parts for selected Kobo readers, including Clara BW, Clara Colour, and Libra Colour. The catalogue includes components such as batteries and screens; the Clara BW page identifies genuine battery and screen parts. This gives owners of those models a documented repair route, but it does not establish that every Kobo is repairable, that parts are in stock everywhere, or that repair will cost less than replacement. Check the iFixit Kobo Repair Hub.
Before relying on a repair option, match the exact model code to the part listing and check current local stock and price. Replacing a screen or battery may require tools and repair skill; the existence of a guide is not a guarantee that a repair is safe or economical for every owner. A comparable official Kindle self-repair catalogue was not verified in the sources reviewed, which is not proof that Kindle repair is impossible.

How to choose for your own books, library, and country
- Check where your existing books live. List the stores and services you use, plus the formats and DRM on files you already own. Kobo’s support for EPUB and comic formats may suit a personal-file collection; books held in an existing Amazon account may make Kindle the more convenient fit. The evidence here does not guarantee cross-store migration.
- Verify library access using your own catalog. Look up a title you expect to borrow, confirm your library participates in the relevant service, and check the title’s format and e-reader instructions for your country. For direct Kobo borrowing, confirm that your Kobo model supports the library workflow.
- Check support for the exact model. For a Kindle, verify its entry in Amazon’s security-update table and whether the stated purchase conditions apply. For a Kobo, use the discontinued-device page to check its status; the cited page does not provide a universal minimum update period.
- Investigate repairs before you need one. Search the exact model and region for parts, current stock, and repair instructions. A parts listing for one Kobo model should not be assumed to apply to another.
- Decide which kind of continuity matters most. If your priority is Amazon-centered books and a clearly stated security-update date for a named Kindle model, Kindle may fit better. If your priority is sideloaded EPUBs, direct borrowing from a participating OverDrive library, or documented parts for a listed Kobo, Kobo may fit better.
