To reduce an atmospheric water generator’s (AWG’s) electricity use per liter, first measure its specific energy consumption (SEC) under representative conditions. Then schedule operation around the air conditions that favor your machine, keep its airflow and heat-transfer components maintained, and avoid running it when it produces little water for the energy consumed. There is no reliable universal savings percentage: results depend on climate, AWG design, controls, and which electrical loads are counted.
Measure a comparable baseline first
SEC expresses energy consumed for a given amount of water, usually in kilowatt-hours per liter (kWh/L) or per kilogram (kWh/kg). Calculate it over the same interval:
SEC = energy consumed (kWh) ÷ water collected (L)
For a useful baseline, record energy at the AWG’s input and the liters collected over matching periods. Log ambient temperature and relative humidity (RH) as well: a number recorded in warm, humid weather is not directly comparable with one from a cool, dry period. Where possible, collect readings across representative days or seasons rather than relying on a brief run.
Define the system boundary before comparing figures. A whole-system measure should include the AWG’s fans, pumps, controls, and water-treatment loads, not just the compressor or core water-making component. For sorption systems, also report regeneration heat and explain whether it is included; an electrical-only figure can obscure substantial thermal energy use.

Metering depends on the unit’s wiring and power draw. A plug-in energy monitor is suitable only if the AWG can safely connect through it and its current rating is adequate. Hardwired or higher-power equipment should be measured with correctly rated professional equipment.
Use air conditions to choose when to run
For cooling-condensation AWGs
These machines cool incoming air below its dew point so water vapor condenses. Warm, humid inlet air generally makes it easier to collect water per unit of cooling effort. Cold or dry conditions can make production less favorable, while conditions that cool the coil below freezing can cause icing and add defrost energy.
Where water demand and storage allow, favor operating periods when measured inlet conditions are warm and humid. Use both temperature and RH rather than RH alone: warm air can hold more moisture, and dew point helps indicate the temperature to which air must be cooled for condensation. Because conditions vary by hour and season, compare SEC alongside the weather recorded during each measurement.

For absorption and adsorption AWGs
Sorption systems capture water using a desiccant or sorbent and then heat it to release the collected moisture. Their regeneration conditions, heat recovery, materials, and process design affect overall efficiency. Low-grade or otherwise-wasted heat may help only if the system is designed to use it. Record thermal input as well as electricity so a lower electrical figure is not mistaken for lower total energy use.

Cooling-condensation equipment depends on airflow and heat removal; sorption systems also depend on their regeneration process. Follow the manufacturer’s service schedule and use the specified filters, cleaning method, and replacement parts. Check the manual or arrange qualified service for restricted airflow, dirty coils, refrigerant condition, or defrost behavior.
Maintenance can help the machine operate as designed, but the available evidence does not establish a generic kWh/L saving for cleaning or any other single maintenance task. Compare SEC before and after service only across periods with reasonably similar conditions and loads.

Cut unproductive operating time
Track water produced per kWh over the day and across different weather conditions. If the unit makes very little water for the electricity it uses, avoid unnecessary run time when demand and storage permit. Use any temperature or humidity thresholds specified by the manufacturer; do not assume a cutoff or override that the machine’s manual does not support.
Some AWGs have storage, timers, or controls that make it possible to shift production toward favorable conditions. Check the model’s documentation to see which functions it actually supports, and assess any schedule change using the same energy-and-water measurement method as the baseline.

What published efficiency figures can—and cannot—tell you
Published SEC values are meaningful only when their conditions and system boundaries are clear. A modeled value, a field result, and a vendor specification are different types of evidence, not interchangeable product ratings.

Modeled technology comparison
A 2024 Springer Nature study reported mean modeled SEC values of 0.42 kWh/kg for cooling condensation, 0.38 kWh/kg for absorption, and 1.16 kWh/kg for adsorption. In its modeled cooling-condensation system, about 90% of energy went to cooling ambient air for condensation. In modeled sorptive systems, around 80% went to heating air and the sorbent or solution for desorption. These are model results, not a guarantee of what a particular AWG will use at a home or site. The study also notes that absorption entails design complexity and corrosion or material constraints, while adsorption performance depends on the sorbent and regeneration conditions. Read the 2024 study.
Field measurements show seasonal variation
A 2022 field study reported annual-average SEC of 2.25 kWh/L. It recorded 0.84 kWh/L in February, when average conditions were 22.16 °C and 63.25% RH, and 2.1 kWh/L in August, at 36.12 °C and 44.9% RH. The study’s results illustrate why a single favorable operating period should not be treated as an annual expectation or a universal rating. Read the 2022 field study.
Vendor figures are not independent comparisons

WaHa lists the Oasis-24 at 0.4–0.75 kWh/L on its product page; this is a vendor claim, not an independently validated result. WaHa says the Oasis-24 Integrated and Oasis-24 Outdoor are open for pre-order, with delivery expected in September 2027; that schedule may change. See WaHa’s Oasis-24 page.

Consider changing technology only after matching the option to the site’s climate, water demand, required daily yield, capacity factor, maintenance needs, and installation constraints. Compare candidates on the same basis:
- SEC with the same electrical and thermal energy boundary.
- Ambient temperature, RH, and time of year during the measurement.
- Daily water output and the share of time the equipment can operate productively.
- Whether regeneration heat is counted for a sorption unit.
- Installation and process complexity, including material or corrosion constraints.
- Water treatment, maintenance, and the kind of evidence behind the figure—modeled, field-measured, or vendor-reported.
A lower modeled SEC by itself does not establish that a technology is the better choice for a particular site. The 2024 study recommends treating AWGs as a complementary water supply because production fluctuates with conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much electricity does an atmospheric water generator use?
There is no single figure that applies to every AWG. Measure the unit’s energy consumption and water output over the same interval, then divide kWh by liters collected. Report the ambient conditions and which loads are included so the result can be compared fairly.
Does humidity affect an atmospheric water generator’s efficiency?
Yes, but humidity should be considered with temperature. For cooling-condensation AWGs, warm, humid air generally favors water production per unit of cooling effort; cold or dry conditions can reduce it. Track temperature and RH during measurement, and account for icing and defrost energy where relevant.
