An atmospheric water generator (AWG) collects water vapor already in the air, turns it into liquid, then treats it before storage or dispensing. The most common design cools incoming air below its dew point so moisture condenses on a coil. Humidity and temperature determine how much water it can collect, while filtration, disinfection, and clean storage determine whether that water is suitable to drink.

How an atmospheric water generator makes water

A refrigeration-based AWG works much like a dehumidifier: it draws in air, cools it until water vapor condenses, and collects the droplets. The resulting condensate is not automatically drinking water; it must pass through a treatment system designed for the unit.

  1. Air intake: A fan draws ambient air into the device. Air filtration can limit airborne particles and contaminants entering the system.
  2. Moisture capture: A cooling coil lowers the air temperature below its dew point. Water vapor condenses on the coil and runs into a collection area.
  3. Treatment: The collected water passes through system-specific filtration and disinfection. Some systems also add minerals after treatment.
  4. Storage or dispensing: Treated water may be held in a tank or dispensed directly. Storage tanks and plumbing need appropriate sanitation because microbes can grow or re-enter the water after treatment.

The U.S. Department of Energy summarizes the requirement this way: “With the proper air filtration and water disinfection, AWG can produce potable water.” DOE Federal Energy Management Program, Best Management Practice #14.

Which technologies capture water from air?

Cooling and condensation

Condensation systems use a fan and refrigeration equipment to cool air across a coil. This is the common AWG approach described by the EPA. It is most productive when the incoming air contains more water vapor and the operating conditions allow efficient condensation. EPA, Atmospheric Water Generation Technology (2019).

  • ✅ [Healthy] - Free from contaminants like heavy metal, pesticides, and other impurities found in ground or surface water. Say goodbye to chlorine and chemicals from urban water supply system. The water tank is made of Food-grade PP (Polypropylene). Say goodbye to plastic bottles and reduce your carbon footprint. Help reduce the humidity level in the room.
  • ✅ [Easy and Convenient] - Can also be connected to solar pannels (paired with a power station or battery bank), makes it a perfect water source for homes, RVs, trailers, boats, off-grid or emergencies during natural disasters.

Desiccants and gas-separation methods

Other approaches use desiccants to capture moisture or membrane and gas-separation processes to extract water from air. These methods work differently from a chilled coil, so their operating conditions, energy needs, and treatment trains must be evaluated for the specific system. The DOE lists these among the alternative AWG approaches. DOE Federal Energy Management Program, Best Management Practice #14.

Why humidity and temperature affect output

An AWG can collect only the moisture present in the air it processes. Both relative humidity and air temperature affect that moisture content, so a manufacturer’s maximum output is meaningful only alongside the conditions under which it was measured.

The EPA’s 2019 technical brief gives historical category ranges of 1 to 20 liters per day for home-scale units and 1,000 to more than 10,000 liters per day for commercial units. These are broad categories, not expected output for a particular model or climate. The same brief reports nearly 600 liters per day for the Watergen GEN-350 under optimal temperature and humidity conditions; that figure is conditional, not a general daily yield. EPA, Atmospheric Water Generation Technology (2019).

How much energy does an AWG use?

Fans and cooling equipment consume electricity in condensation systems. The DOE notes that colder, humid environments require more energy than warmer, humid conditions. The sources cited here do not establish a current market-wide energy-per-liter figure, so a single number should not be assumed to describe AWGs generally.

For a meaningful comparison, look for water output and electricity consumption reported under the same stated temperature and relative humidity. A capacity figure without operating conditions does not show how much water the unit will produce in your location or what the energy cost will be.

Is water made from air safe to drink?

Not by default. Condensation does not sterilize water. Airborne contaminants may enter the condensate, and microbes can grow in the treatment system, plumbing, or stored water. The DOE says proper air filtration and water disinfection are needed for potable use. Mineral addition, where included, is a separate step and does not replace disinfection.

An EPA study evaluated untreated condensate and treated water from one commercial model, the Watergen GEN-350, over February 28 to September 6, 2018. The EPA reported no detection of the specified opportunistic pathogens in weekly samples, but high heterotrophic plate counts in treated water suggested inadequate disinfection and/or regrowth after treatment. The report recommended adding chlorination or ozonation to that model’s treatment train. It cautions that the results are not directly transferable to other AWG systems. EPA, Evaluation of Atmospheric Water Generation Technology: Microbial Water Quality.

The EPA’s 2019 technical brief also summarizes reviewed Watergen data: elemental analyses were not above then-current drinking-water standards, while microbial counts were elevated. It notes that volatile organic compounds in air may dissolve into condensate and that plumbing or stored water may support microbial growth. Those findings reinforce the need to assess the treatment and storage design of the specific system rather than treating all AWG water as either safe or unsafe. What to check when comparing AWGs

  • Output conditions: Check the specified air temperature and relative humidity for any quoted daily yield.
  • Electricity use: Look for consumption reported at those same operating conditions, not just a maximum capacity.
  • Air filtration: Confirm what is filtered before air reaches the moisture-capture stage.
  • Water treatment: Identify the filtration and disinfection stages, and whether the system provides evidence for potable use.
  • Storage hygiene: Check how tanks, plumbing, and dispensing points are cleaned or protected against microbial regrowth.
  • Operating limits: Confirm whether the system is specified for your local temperature and humidity range.

For example, India’s Science, Technology & Innovation Portal describes a CSIR-IICT AWG technology that condenses atmospheric moisture and remineralizes it; the page identifies Maithri Aquatech as the technology transferee. This illustrates one treatment approach, not an endorsement or a guarantee that other systems use the same process. India Science, Technology & Innovation Portal, “Atmospheric Water Generator (AWG) With Remineralization” (updated March 30, 2020).
