Start by identifying the chart’s return type, currency, and “as of” date. The S&P/BYMA Argentina General Construction Index is an Argentine stock-market benchmark for companies in construction-related industries—not a measure of construction output, housing starts, or building costs.

What the index measures

S&P Dow Jones Indices describes the benchmark as measuring stocks in the S&P/BYMA Argentina General Index that fall into construction-related Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS) categories. The methodology’s eligible sub-industries are Construction Materials (15102010), Forest Products (15105010), Building Products (20102010), Construction & Engineering (20103010), and Homebuilding (25201030). See the index overview and the S&P/BYMA Indices Methodology.

Its eligible stocks come from the parent S&P/BYMA Argentina General Index, which covers domestic local stocks listed on the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange. The parent index requires a stock to have traded on at least 20% of trading days in the preceding 12 months. The construction index then selects companies from that universe according to the specified GICS classifications. This makes it a sector-focused equity benchmark, not a direct gauge of Argentina’s physical construction activity. Details of the parent universe are on the parent index page.

How to read the chart

  1. Choose the return series. The official page offers Price Return and Total Return. Price Return tracks share-price movements; Total Return also accounts for reinvested distributions under the provider’s index calculation. Identify which series you are viewing before interpreting or comparing performance.
  2. Check currency and date. The index page lists ARS as the calculation currency and says the index is calculated at end of day. Read the chart’s “as of” date and the displayed start and end dates. The chart is not automatically inflation-adjusted or converted to US dollars because it is being viewed from another country.
  3. Account for weighting. The index uses float-adjusted market-cap weighting. Companies with larger eligible market capitalizations can have more influence than smaller ones, so the chart is not an equal-weight average of its constituents.
  4. Distinguish live history from back-tested history. S&P Dow Jones Indices lists a launch date of October 7, 2019, and a first value date of January 11, 2019. The provider cautions that performance before the launch date is hypothetical back-tested performance, not actual index performance.
  5. Match the period and return mode. A daily move, year-to-date return, and one-year return describe different intervals. For a valid comparison, align the start and end dates, observation frequency, return type, and currency.

Why the “as of” date matters

Index levels and performance figures change with the reporting date. For example, S&P Dow Jones Indices displayed an ARS price-return index level of 32,170.31 and a one-year price return of 36.87% on September 14, 2026. A separate provider snapshot showed a one-year price return of 26.30% as of August 31, 2026. These are dated examples, not current quotes; check the live index page for the latest chart and performance data.

What concentration means when interpreting a move

The provider page’s characteristics displayed six constituents and a largest-constituent weight of 82.5% in the snapshot dated September 14, 2026. That concentration means the index’s movement at that snapshot could be strongly affected by its largest company; it should not be read as a broad, evenly distributed reading of every construction-related business in Argentina. Constituent counts and weights can change, so treat those figures as date-specific.

How to compare it with another benchmark

Before comparing this chart with another index, align the return series, currency, start and end dates, and observation frequency. Then check what each benchmark includes and how it is weighted. The S&P/BYMA Argentina General Construction Index is a concentrated, float-adjusted-cap-weighted subset of the broader Argentina General Index, so it is not interchangeable with the broad market or the S&P Merval.
