Choose an office suite by checking three things against your actual work: where documents are stored, whether you need to edit without a network, and how reliably files must move between your suite and other people’s. LibreOffice and ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors document offline-capable desktop editing. Microsoft Office 2024 and Microsoft 365 provide Microsoft desktop apps, but differ in purchase model, cloud services, and activation requirements. The available documentation does not establish a universal privacy winner or a neutral compatibility ranking.
How to choose an office suite for your priorities
Start with the work you need to do, not a broad claim that one suite is “best.” These options are starting points, not guarantees: test important files and check the terms for the edition and devices you plan to use.

Compare the options on six practical axes: local storage versus cloud collaboration; offline editing versus activation or sync needs; format support and fidelity for complex files; privacy controls and connected services; subscription versus one-time purchase; and support for your operating system and devices.
Can you work offline?
Yes, but “offline” does not mean that setup, activation, synchronization, or licensing can never require internet access. It also matters whether a document is actually stored on your device or only in a cloud service.

Microsoft 365 and Office 2024
Microsoft says its desktop Office apps can work offline after installation and activation. Blank documents can be created and local Office files opened without a connection. For files in OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, SharePoint, Dropbox, or Google Drive, Microsoft’s guidance says to open the file online at least once before working on it offline. A cloud-held file must also be available locally—for example, through syncing—to use without a network. Microsoft Support: Can I work offline?
Microsoft 365 requires internet access for initial installation and activation, updates, and billing management. Microsoft advises reconnecting at least monthly to avoid reduced functionality. Office 2024 also needs internet for initial installation and activation, and periodic reactivation. ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors and LibreOffice

Privacy Guides lists LibreOffice and ONLYOFFICE among tools that can be used offline. Its criteria include cross-platform availability, open source, editing documents, spreadsheets, and slides, and exporting to standard formats. How do Microsoft 365 and Office 2024 differ?
They are different purchase and service models, not interchangeable names for the same license. Microsoft describes Office 2024 as a one-time purchase without new feature updates, while Microsoft 365 is a subscription with ongoing feature updates and cloud storage. Check the current product page for what a particular edition includes; the license model alone does not tell you whether its apps or services fit your workflow. What privacy controls should you compare?
Look for specific controls and the scope of the documentation behind them; neither a vendor policy page nor open-source status establishes that a suite is a universal privacy winner.

Microsoft documents controls for diagnostic data and connected experiences in supported desktop Office products. Its guidance covers desktop applications included with Microsoft 365 plans and retail Office 2024/2021. On Windows, the documented controls include diagnostic-data levels and options for connected experiences that analyze content, download online content, or are optional. The Document Foundation privacy policy identifies the organization responsible for the policy and describes data collected through its website, including logs and analytics. For sensitive work, inspect the settings in the installed edition, disable connected features you do not need, store sensitive files locally when appropriate, and follow your organization’s policies on managed devices. These are practical precautions, not a claim that any product is risk-free.

Will documents stay compatible between suites?
Support for a file format does not guarantee that a complex document will look or behave identically after opening and saving it in another suite. The risk depends on the features the file uses.
Microsoft Office and OpenDocument Format
Microsoft explains that OpenDocument Format (ODF) originated to support OpenOffice-based productivity suites, while Open XML was developed to support Microsoft Office. Office can save ODF files, but Microsoft warns that differences in suite features and implementation can change how files behave or cause content loss. LibreOffice and Microsoft Office formats
LibreOffice says it can open and save Microsoft Office formats, including Office Open XML. That support does not mean every feature will round-trip unchanged. Microsoft Office and LibreOffice generally cannot run the same macro code because they use different object models. Test the files that matter
Before adopting a suite for regular exchange, use demanding documents from your actual workflow rather than an empty sample. Save a copy in the target format, reopen it in the recipient’s application, and check the features you rely on:
- Page breaks, fonts, tracked changes, and comments in text documents
- Embedded objects and spreadsheet formulas or charts
- Presentation animations
- Macros and any workflow that depends on them
This test is especially important when a file must preserve exact formatting or behavior: documented format support alone does not establish that it will.
