A robot mower usually slips or gets stuck on a hill because wet grass reduces traction, debris fouls a drive wheel, the slope exceeds that model’s limit, or a wire layout forces a difficult turn on the incline. Let the grass dry, safely inspect the wheels, check the mower’s error message, and compare the slope and installation with the exact model’s manual before changing the boundary or buying an accessory.
Why a robot mower loses traction on a hill
Wet grass makes climbing and turning harder
Wet grass can reduce tire grip enough for wheels to spin or slide. Husqvarna lists wet grass as a cause of a “Slipped” fault and advises waiting for the lawn to dry; Robomow’s RT guide also warns that wet grass decreases traction. If the mower only struggles when the lawn is damp, that alone does not establish a mechanical fault.
The slope or turn may be beyond the mower’s capability
There is no single safe slope rating for all robot mowers. Limits vary by model and can differ for a slope inside the mowing area versus one at its outer boundary. A mower that can traverse an incline in a straight line may still slip when it has to turn around an obstacle or follow a boundary on that incline. Husqvarna notes that obstacle-avoidance turns on steep slopes increase slipping risk, especially when wet, and can wear the grass.
Debris or wire layout can be part of the problem
Grass and other material wound around a drive wheel can impede movement or contribute to an overload fault. A guide or boundary layout may also make the mower turn or cross an incline in a way that causes it to lose grip. Robomow’s RK support, for example, lists a perimeter wire set too close to the edge as one possible reason a mower stops; the appropriate wire placement depends on the specific model and installation.

How to diagnose and fix the problem

Pause mowing if the grass is wet
Let the lawn dry, then restart the mower and see whether the problem returns. Husqvarna’s Automower 520/550 manual specifically advises waiting until the lawn has dried when wet grass is responsible for a “Slipped” fault. Avoid treating a wet-weather traction problem as proof that the mower is defective.

Note exactly where it stops
Record whether it slips while climbing, descending, crossing the slope, turning near an obstacle, or approaching the lawn’s edge. The location and movement can help distinguish a traction issue from a difficult turn or boundary-layout problem. Check the displayed error message as well; for example, Husqvarna’s 520/550 manual associates “Wheel motor overloaded” with material wound around a drive wheel.

Stop and inspect the drive wheels
Before clearing anything, stop the mower and follow its own shutdown and isolation instructions. Check for grass or debris wrapped around the drive wheels and remove it using the cleaning method specified in the manual. Husqvarna recommends a soft brush or water hose for clogged wheels, but cleaning instructions can vary by model. Robomow’s RT guide says to remove its disabling device before servicing or clearing a drive-wheel or blade blockage and to ensure moving parts have stopped; use your own mower’s procedure rather than assuming that instruction applies to every model.

Measure the incline and check the exact model’s limits
Slope grade is the vertical rise divided by the horizontal distance, multiplied by 100. A 10 cm rise over 100 cm of horizontal run is a 10% grade. This is a percentage, not a degree measurement. Use the units and measuring method specified by your mower’s documentation, then check its working-area and boundary limits separately.

Review guide and boundary placement
For physical-wire installations, Husqvarna advises laying the guide wire diagonally across a slope to support traction and reduce grass wear. Its guidance also says to isolate areas steeper than the mower’s limit. AWD-specific installation requirements, including clearances around obstacles and level transition space, apply only where the model’s instructions specify them.
If slipping happens during a turn or at the lawn’s edge, inspect the wire route and the turn conditions against the mower’s manual. Husqvarna suggests irregular patterns in complex steep areas and excluding the area if the problem persists. Do not move a boundary wire by an arbitrary distance: a placement that helps one installation could conflict with another model’s requirements.

Keep over-limit slopes out of the mowing area
If the measured incline exceeds the exact model’s permitted limit, use the manufacturer-supported boundary, island, or stay-out-zone method to exclude it. Do not rely on a terrain accessory or a different model’s published rating to make that area safe for your mower.

Consider a compatible terrain kit only after the basic checks
Husqvarna describes an optional Terrain Kit for most Automower models, with heavy rear wheels and wheel brushes intended to improve grip and performance on sloping lawns. Check compatibility for the exact model. The kit is a traction aid, not evidence that an over-limit slope is acceptable.

When to change the installation or seek service
- It works when dry but slips when damp: wait for the lawn to dry before running it on the slope.
- A wheel is obstructed or an overload message appears: stop the mower, follow its isolation procedure, clear the obstruction as the manual directs, and inspect again.
- It repeatedly stops at a turn or edge: review the wire route and clearances using the exact model’s installation instructions.
- The incline is above the model’s rating: exclude the slope using the supported method; do not keep retrying the same route.
- The problem continues on a dry, in-range slope with clear wheels and correct installation: consult the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance or service support, including the mower’s error message and where it stopped.
