A green meteor can glow because its passage excites oxygen in the surrounding atmosphere, while vaporized elements from the incoming meteoroid also contribute light. The visible color depends on both the body’s composition and its speed, so green is not a reliable way to identify what the meteor is made of.

What makes a meteor glow?

A meteoroid is the body traveling through space; a meteor is the bright atmospheric path seen when that body enters Earth’s atmosphere. As it plunges through the air, it is slowed and heated, and a bow shock compresses and heats air ahead of it. The hot gases and vaporized material produce the visible light, while ablation strips material from the meteoroid. NASA explains this entry process in its Fireballs overview.

The glowing cloud is not simply the meteoroid burning. NASA Ames Research Center says atoms from the surrounding atmosphere account for 95% of the luminous meteor cloud; vaporized meteoroid material makes up the remainder. The relative light from these sources varies with the event.

Why can the light look green?

One source can be excited oxygen in the air around the meteor. In a NASA Earth Observatory photograph of a 2021 Perseid, NASA Meteoroid Environment Office lead Bill Cooke attributed the green section to oxygen molecules excited during the meteoroid’s atmospheric passage. NASA describes this specific photograph and explanation in Meteors Great and Small.

Light from vaporized meteoroid elements can contribute too. NASA’s meteor-color overview lists nickel as a source associated with green and magnesium with blue-white light. The observed color is a mixture, not a one-element label: speed changes which colors are intensified, and atmospheric emissions also affect what reaches the observer.

Does green tell you what a meteor is made of?

No. Color seen by eye is not a dependable composition test. NASA researchers Althea V. Moorhead and Aaron Kingery report that most spectral categories in their analysis could not be distinguished by color alone. Their poster describes a catalog of 84 meteor spectra, a sample size rather than a statistic about how often meteors appear green. Full spectra or filters tuned to specific spectral lines can separate categories more effectively.

That is why a brief green streak cannot establish whether a meteor contains nickel, what a surviving meteorite is made of, or whether a fragment has any particular value. NASA’s explanation of meteor color and its limits is in Interesting Fact of the Month 2021; the spectroscopy discussion is in the NASA-hosted poster, Does a meteor’s ‘color’ reflect its composition?.

Is a green meteor an aurora or a star?

No. A meteor is the atmospheric light produced during a meteoroid’s passage, not a star. An aurora is a separate atmospheric light phenomenon; a meteor’s short-lived trail is not an aurora simply because both can appear green.

Terminology helps distinguish what is being observed: a very bright meteor is often called a fireball; a bolide refers to an exploding fireball, though the terms are sometimes used interchangeably. A meteoroid that survives passage and reaches the ground is a meteorite.
