Start with Filmmaker Mode, or the closest Movie/Cinema preset; choose a warm color temperature; set backlight brightness for your room; and test local dimming on real content. Then adjust only what you can see needs changing. There is no universal set of numeric settings for every MiniLED TV, and the best balance depends on the model, room, content, and your preferences.
1. Choose an accurate picture mode
If your TV offers Filmmaker Mode, use it as a starting point. It is designed to avoid extra picture and motion processing, though its appearance may not suit everyone and it may limit access to some controls. If it is unavailable or looks too dim for your room, try the TV’s Movie, Cinema, or equivalent preset. These modes are generally intended to present a more accurate image than vivid or dynamic modes. See RTINGS’ TV calibration guide and LG’s guidance on picture settings.
A brighter preset can be a reasonable preference in a well-lit room, but it may prioritize punch over accuracy. Picture-mode names and available controls vary by manufacturer and model.
2. Set color temperature to Warm
Choose Warm, or the closest warm option, as an accuracy-oriented starting point. RTINGS identifies warm settings as closest to the 6500 K color-temperature standard referenced in its general calibration guidance. A cooler-looking picture is not necessarily more accurate; adjust only if you prefer its appearance.

3. Match backlight brightness to the room
Use the backlight or panel-brightness control to make the image comfortable and visible under your usual viewing conditions. A bright room may call for more light output than a dark room, so there is no single level that works for everyone. The setting’s name and behavior vary by TV. Ambient lighting, screen reflections, and the content itself also affect how bright the picture appears; LG discusses these factors in its picture-setting guide.
Do not confuse an LCD MiniLED backlight control with OLED-specific brightness controls. If your TV separates SDR and HDR picture modes, set and check brightness for both rather than assuming one change applies to everything.

4. Test local dimming with dark scenes
Try Medium or High local dimming, then judge it with the content you actually watch. Local dimming controls backlight zones: stronger operation can deepen dark areas and improve perceived contrast, but it can also make halos around bright objects or subtitles more noticeable. Lower the setting if blooming, flicker, or distracting transitions outweigh the contrast benefit.
For a useful check, play a dark scene that includes subtitles or small bright highlights, then watch whether halos or changes in brightness distract you. Also notice what happens when bright objects move across dark backgrounds. Local-dimming algorithms differ, and zone count alone does not determine how cleanly a TV handles transitions. RTINGS explains these behaviors in its lighting-zone precision and transitions test.

Model-specific advice should stay model-specific. For example, RTINGS’ Sony BRAVIA 7 II calibration guide recommends Auto Local Dimming at Medium and Backlight Lighting Mode at Color for that reviewed TV. It reports that High can keep its backlight in RGB mode more often and cause color leakage near white objects. That is not a general MiniLED setting: the TV uses RGB MiniLED controls, and the observation concerns that model and review unit.

- Black level: It is usually correct by default in Movie or Custom mode, according to RTINGS. Change it only if the picture visibly looks wrong.
- Contrast: It is generally close to correct by default. If bright areas lose detail, adjust it cautiously and check whether that detail returns.
- Sharpness: Reduce it if edges have unnatural outlines. Excessive sharpness can exaggerate outlines rather than reveal real detail.
These are general starting points, not guarantees for every model. If a control is correctly set and the image looks right, there is no benefit to changing it just because a settings list says to.

6. Recheck settings in SDR and HDR
TVs may store separate settings for SDR and HDR, and some controls can change when HDR content starts. Check the picture mode and relevant brightness or local-dimming controls while actual HDR content is playing. Also check the correct input: some TVs save picture settings by input as well as by picture mode. RTINGS’ BRAVIA 7 II settings guide illustrates how a single model can have distinct SDR and HDR calibration settings.
7. Avoid copying advanced calibration values
White balance and color-space settings can vary between individual TV units, even when they share the same model. Do not copy another set’s advanced values and assume they will improve yours. Basic setup does not require measuring equipment; true calibration does. If you want measured calibration rather than a comfortable, sensible setup, a colorimeter is an optional tool, not a prerequisite for using the TV.
MiniLED describes a backlight approach, not one shared picture-processing system. The TV’s local-dimming algorithm, room, content, and chosen settings all influence the result. Treat general recommendations as starting points and make final adjustments by viewing your own content.
