There is no universal wattage: use the USB-C charging requirement for your exact laptop model and configuration. Check the manufacturer’s guidance for both the minimum input and any recommended wattage for fast charging, then make sure the charger’s output on the port you’ll use and the cable support that power. A USB-C connector by itself does not mean the laptop can charge through it.
How to find the right USB-C charger wattage
- Identify the exact laptop model and configuration. Check the label, system information, or original documentation; similar models can have different charging requirements.
- Open the manufacturer’s support page or manual. Confirm that the specific USB-C port accepts charging and whether the laptop requires USB Power Delivery (USB PD).
- Look for the minimum and recommended charging ratings. If the manufacturer lists a fast-charge recommendation, choose that rating when you want the specified faster charging. A lower input may work but charge more slowly or be insufficient in some operating states.
- Match the charger and cable. Check the output available from the individual charger port you’ll use, including its voltage and current profile, and verify that the cable supports the required power.
- Account for how you use the laptop. A charger that can charge while the laptop is asleep or off may not keep up when the computer is running under load.
Prefer a safety-approved charger and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. Lenovo cautions against unqualified third-party chargers in its ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 guidance and Legion 5 Pro guidance.
Minimum wattage and fast-charge wattage are not always the same
Some manufacturers distinguish the lowest supported input from the wattage recommended for fast charging. Microsoft’s Surface Laptop charging table, accessed in 2026, provides model-specific examples:

These figures apply to the listed Surface models, not laptops generally. Use the entry for your exact model rather than treating 60W—or any other figure—as a universal target.

Will a 65W charger charge your laptop?
Possibly, if the laptop accepts charging over USB-C and the charger provides a compatible output profile at the port you’re using. Whether 65W meets the laptop’s minimum, enables fast charging, or is enough while you work depends on the model and its operating state.
Lenovo’s 2023 ThinkPad T14, P14s, T16, and P16s Gen 2 documentation illustrates why the exact configuration matters. It lists 45W or 65W adapter options for the ThinkPad T14 Gen 4; 65W or 100W for the Intel P14s Gen 4, and 65W for its AMD version. T16 Gen 2 and P16s Gen 2 options vary by model and processor configuration, with listed ratings from 45W to 135W. Lenovo notes that charging speed also depends on factors such as battery state, adapter wattage, and whether the computer is in use.

These are manufacturer-listed adapter options for specific ThinkPad configurations; they do not establish that every USB-C port on those laptops accepts charging at every listed rating. Check the charging guidance for your own model and port.
Can you use a higher-wattage USB-C charger?
A higher wattage printed on a charger does not by itself establish compatibility. Check that the laptop supports USB-C charging and that the charger can provide an output profile the laptop accepts. For a multiport charger, use the rating for the specific port and check whether it changes when another device is connected; the headline wattage may not describe what a single port supplies in that situation.

Also make sure the cable supports the required power level. Microsoft’s Windows charging troubleshooting guidance says, “To get the fastest charging time, your PC, charger, and cable must support the industry standards.”

- The charger’s output is below the laptop’s need. The battery may charge slowly, or the input may not be enough while the laptop is in use.
- The USB-C port does not support charging. The connector’s shape alone does not confirm that it accepts power.
- The charger or cable does not support a compatible standard or power profile. Confirm the laptop, charger, and cable capabilities against the manufacturer’s specifications.
- The laptop is under load. Power consumed by the running computer can reduce or outpace the power available for charging.
- The model limits USB-C charging in certain states. Lenovo’s ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 manual describes 20V at 2.25A (45W) as the minimum threshold for USB-C power input on that model; at that threshold, charging is listed as possible in sleep, hibernation, or powered-off states. The manual says USB-C is not the primary input and may not allow full performance or the expected charging speed.
- The laptop is operating while input is insufficient. Lenovo’s Legion 5 Pro manual lists tested USB-C PD ratings for that model and warns that USB-C input may be insufficient while it is operating, reducing performance or slowing or stopping battery charging.
If charging is slow, compare the laptop’s documented requirements with the charger’s per-port output and cable rating, then check whether the behavior changes when the laptop is asleep or off. The acceptable input and expected charging behavior are model-specific.
