Switch 2 is worth the extra cost if you want its exclusive games, a larger and sharper handheld screen, or higher-resolution TV output. If the original Switch already plays the games you care about and its lower price matters more than those upgrades, keeping it is reasonable. Before buying, check compatibility for the specific games you rely on and include storage and replacement accessories in your budget.

This comparison is between Switch 2 and the original LCD Switch—not the Switch OLED. Prices below are U.S. references and may vary by retailer and region.

What changes with Switch 2?

The main differences are the handheld display, TV output, storage, new controller features, and access to Switch 2-only games. Nintendo’s Switch 2 technical specifications and Switch family page list the hardware details.

Feature Nintendo Switch 2 Original LCD Switch
Handheld display 7.9-inch LCD, 1920 × 1080, HDR10 support, and VRR up to 120 Hz 6.2-inch LCD
TV output Up to 3840 × 2160 (4K) at 60 fps in TV mode, with a compatible TV or monitor; individual games may output at lower resolutions or frame rates Not stated on Nintendo’s cited family page
Internal storage 256 GB UFS Not stated on Nintendo’s cited family page
Game-storage expansion microSD Express; conventional microSD cards cannot expand Switch 2 game storage Not stated on Nintendo’s cited family page
Battery life Approximately 2–6.5 hours, according to Nintendo; varies by software and conditions Not stated on Nintendo’s cited family page

Handheld play: bigger and sharper, but still LCD

Switch 2’s 7.9-inch screen has a higher resolution than the original LCD Switch’s 6.2-inch screen. That can make handheld play more appealing if you value a larger viewing area and sharper image. However, Switch 2 uses an LCD panel, not an OLED panel. If display technology is your main concern, compare it with the separately sold Switch OLED rather than treating the original LCD and OLED models as identical.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

TV play: 4K output is a capability, not a promise for every game

Switch 2 supports TV output up to 4K at 60 fps when connected to a compatible TV or monitor. That specification does not mean every game renders at 4K or runs at a fixed frame rate. Consider the games you play and the display you own before treating the maximum output as a reason to upgrade.

Storage and battery

Switch 2 includes 256 GB of internal storage. If that is not enough for your games, expansion requires a microSD Express card. Nintendo says a conventional microSD card can be used to view screenshots and videos captured on Switch, but not to expand Switch 2 game storage. Its listed battery estimate is approximately 2–6.5 hours; actual play time depends on the software and conditions, so it is not a guaranteed session length.

Controllers and new play features

Switch 2’s Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically and offer mouse functionality in compatible games. The original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they do not attach to the new console and cannot be charged by attaching to it. That makes existing controllers potentially useful, but not a complete substitute for the new set in every play setup.

Can you bring your Switch games, account, and accessories?

Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo warns that some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible because of hardware differences. Check Nintendo’s current Switch 2 compatibility information for each game you depend on before buying; do not assume the entire Switch library works without exceptions.

Nintendo Accounts, eShop funds, and account-linked digital software can be used on Switch 2. User profiles and linked accounts can also be transferred. Confirm the transfer steps and any title-specific requirements in Nintendo Support before moving to the new system.

Original Switch item Use with Switch 2
Physical and digital Switch games Compatible titles work; some may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Check Nintendo’s current compatibility information.
Original Joy-Con Can pair wirelessly, but do not attach to Switch 2 and cannot be charged by attaching to it; use a separate compatible charging method.
Original Pro Controller Can be used wirelessly.
Original Switch dock Not compatible.
Original Switch AC adapter Can charge Switch 2 directly, but cannot operate it in TV mode.
Original HDMI cable Not compatible for the corresponding Switch 2 use, according to Nintendo.
Conventional microSD card Cannot expand Switch 2 game storage; Nintendo says it can be used to view screenshots and videos captured on Switch.

These compatibility details are from Nintendo Support’s console compatibility guidance. Check model compatibility before buying a dock, case, screen protector, or other accessory; do not assume original Switch accessories fit the newer console.

What does each console cost in the U.S.?

Nintendo’s current U.S. family page lists the original LCD Switch at a suggested retail price of $339.99 and notes that actual prices may vary. Nintendo announced a Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle for late September 2026 at $549.99. That bundle includes a game download and a 90-day Nintendo Switch Online Individual Membership; Nintendo described a $37.98 saving compared with buying its items separately. It is a dated U.S. bundle reference, not a standalone Switch 2 price or a guarantee of today’s retail price. Check current listings and compare the included game, subscription terms, condition, and regional currency.

For historical context only, Nintendo’s April 18, 2025 launch announcement listed Switch 2 at $449.99, the Mario Kart World bundle at $499.99, and a Samsung 256 GB microSD Express card at $59.99. These were launch MSRPs, not current offers. See Nintendo’s 2026 bundle announcement, current Switch family page, and 2025 launch-price announcement for the respective price details.

Is Switch 2 worth upgrading to?

Upgrade if the new games or hardware matter to you

  • You want Switch 2-exclusive games that are unavailable on the original Switch.
  • You value a larger, sharper handheld screen or Switch 2’s higher maximum TV output.
  • You want the new Joy-Con 2 features for compatible games.
  • You have checked compatibility for the Switch games and accessories you plan to keep using, and the current price fits your budget.

Keep the original Switch if it already meets your needs

  • The games you care about are available and work well on your current console.
  • You would rather avoid the upgrade cost and the expense of any replacement accessories or additional storage.
  • The improvements are not important enough to change how you play.

Consider Switch OLED if screen quality is the deciding factor

The original Switch OLED is a separate model with an OLED display; Switch 2 has an LCD display. If your main reason to upgrade is the handheld screen, compare the OLED model as a third option instead of assuming Switch 2’s larger screen is automatically the better fit.

Count the full cost, not just the console

Include a microSD Express card if you expect to exceed the 256 GB of internal storage, and account for any Switch 2-specific dock, case, or other accessories you need. Verify each accessory’s compatibility before purchase; an old dock or case should not be assumed to fit or work.

What Nintendo’s sales record does—and does not—tell you

Nintendo said Switch 2 sold more than 3.5 million systems worldwide in its first four days after its June 5, 2025 launch, based on the company’s internal sales data. That is a historical launch figure, not evidence that the console is worth its current price for every buyer. Nintendo of America President and Chief Operating Officer Doug Bowser called it “an upgraded way to play at home and on the go”; that is Nintendo’s promotional description, not an independent product assessment. See Nintendo’s June 11, 2025 announcement.
