Choose Marvel Rivals if Marvel characters, hero-combination abilities, and destructible environments are the main draw. Both are free-to-play, and 6v6 is available in each; the better fit depends on the kind of team play and game world you prefer.
How the two games differ
| What matters to you | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Explicit Damage, Tank, and Support roles | Overwatch | PlayStation’s product page describes these roles and their team functions. PlayStation’s Overwatch overview |
| Marvel heroes and combinations of their abilities | Marvel Rivals | NetEase describes Team-Up Skills that combine heroes’ abilities. Marvel Rivals’ launch announcement |
| 6v6 matches | Either | NetEase describes Marvel Rivals as 6v6; PlayStation lists both 5v5 and 6v6 for Overwatch. |
| More build customization | Overwatch | Blizzard describes Stadium Powers, Items, and build selection in its 2026 Season 1 announcement. |
| Changing the battlefield | Marvel Rivals | NetEase highlights destructible environments players can alter for tactical advantage. |
| A favorite character or fictional universe | The game featuring it | Character attachment is a sound reason to choose a game, but does not establish that it is mechanically superior. |
What playing Overwatch is like
Overwatch is a first-person, team-based shooter organized around Damage, Tank, and Support roles. That structure gives players a clear way to think about how a hero contributes to a team. PlayStation’s product page currently lists more than 40 heroes, more than 25 maps, and matches in either 5v5 or 6v6; those counts and formats are product-page claims that may change. See PlayStation’s Overwatch overview.

Stadium adds a build-focused option
In Stadium, players make build choices using Powers and Items. That makes it a useful reason to look at Overwatch if customizing how a hero develops during play appeals to you. Blizzard’s 2026 Season 1 announcement also describes hero-specific Perks and other changes for that season. These are announced game features, not evidence that Overwatch receives better support than Marvel Rivals.
Season information can change
PlayStation describes Overwatch seasons as nine-week cycles. Blizzard’s 2026 Season 1 announcement describes the start of a year-long Reign of Talon story, five new heroes for that season, and a five-week Conquest event. Treat these as dated season details rather than permanent rules for future seasons. The same announcement says Nintendo Switch 2 was planned for Season 2; it does not establish whether that plan was later completed.

What playing Marvel Rivals is like
Marvel Rivals centers its appeal on Marvel characters, 6v6 action, Team-Up Skills, and destructible environments. If you want to see familiar heroes work together through abilities designed to combine, that identity may matter more than a particular match size. NetEase’s launch announcement says players can alter destructible settings for tactical advantage. Read the Marvel Rivals launch announcement.
Roster and unlock claims need a date
NetEase’s December 2024 launch announcement said all heroes would be free and unlocked at launch and beyond. That is a launch-era policy statement; it does not, by itself, confirm the current unlock policy. The available product information here does not establish a current Marvel Rivals hero total, so a precise roster comparison would be unreliable.

Launch-era seasonal plans are not a current schedule
The same 2024 announcement said each seasonal drop would introduce heroes and maps. Because that statement dates to launch, it should not be read as confirmation of the current season cadence or a complete account of today’s platform availability.
Do you need to buy either game?
Both games are presented as free-to-play by their cited official or platform descriptions. Optional purchases may be available, but the cited pages do not provide a current, like-for-like comparison of spending requirements. You do not need to buy a soundtrack or other physical product to play either game.

Which one should you try first?
- Start with Overwatch if defined team roles, first-person action, or Stadium’s build choices are what you want to explore.
- Start with Marvel Rivals if Marvel characters, hero synergies, or destructible settings are your priority.
- Try both if match size is your deciding factor. Both have a documented 6v6 format, so team size alone does not settle the choice.
Neither game’s cited product information establishes a comparative winner for balance, population, or competitive quality. If you are undecided, play each and judge the feel of its heroes, teamwork, and matches for yourself.
