Its built-in audio may be enough for your room and viewing habits; an external system is an optional upgrade if you want a different audio setup or features your exact TV and speaker support.
When an LG OLED soundbar makes sense
Consider an external audio system if the TV’s built-in sound is not satisfying you, or if you specifically want a setup with a soundbar, subwoofer, or rear speakers. LG describes a soundbar and subwoofer as adding “that special touch,” but that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent comparison of sound quality.
You can also choose an external speaker arrangement without a soundbar in some supported configurations. LG says a single M7 speaker can provide Dolby Atmos with a compatible Dolby Atmos FlexConnect TV. LG’s 2026 FAQ describes that setup, while its press release specifies support through software update 2.4.26 on select 2025 G5, C5, and CS5 TVs. Check the exact model, current software, and regional availability before relying on this option: LG support and LG Newsroom.
Check compatibility before choosing a system
“LG OLED” alone does not establish that a particular soundbar feature will work. Compare the exact TV and soundbar model numbers, available ports, and the features you actually plan to use. LG’s product-year material names the OLED G4, C4, and B4 as WOW Orchestra compatible in its 2024 catalogue context; do not assume the same support for other years or models.

- Connection: Confirm both devices have the ports you intend to use, such as HDMI ARC/eARC or optical.
- Speaker arrangement: Decide whether you want only a soundbar, a separate subwoofer, rear speakers, or another supported arrangement.
- Feature support: Verify both devices support any desired feature, such as WOW Orchestra or WOWCAST. Feature names are not guarantees of compatibility across all LG OLED TVs and soundbars.
- Simultaneous playback: LG says some connection types allow TV speakers and an external speaker to play at the same time. Whether that applies to your setup depends on the devices and selected settings.
Connect a soundbar by HDMI ARC/eARC
For a wired HDMI setup, connect the soundbar port marked TV ARC/eARC to the TV’s HDMI input marked ARC/eARC. Then select the connected external speaker in the TV’s Sound Out settings. LG’s current guide gives the path Settings → All Settings → Sound → Sound Out, but menus and labels can differ by TV release year and webOS version. Choose the output that matches your connection and check your model’s guide if the path differs.
- Locate the ARC/eARC-labeled HDMI port on both the TV and soundbar.
- Connect those ports with an HDMI cable.
- On the TV, open Settings → All Settings → Sound → Sound Out and select the corresponding external audio output.
- Test audio and volume control. LG says ARC can also support TV-remote volume and power control.
Optical is another wired option described in LG’s S95QR guide, but it only works if the specific TV and soundbar have the necessary ports. Confirm that the connection and audio formats meet your needs before choosing it.

If the connected soundbar has no sound
Before treating silence as a compatibility or hardware fault, check the basics:
- Make sure the TV and soundbar are not muted and their volume is raised.
- Confirm the soundbar is set to the input used by the TV.
- Check that both cable ends are firmly connected to the intended ports.
- Verify the TV’s Sound Out setting is set to the connected speaker.
If those checks do not resolve the problem, confirm the connection and output instructions for the exact TV and soundbar models; available settings depend on the devices.

Make the decision based on your setup
If you are happy with the TV’s built-in sound, you do not need to add anything. If you want an external system, choose one based on confirmed model compatibility, the connection ports available, the speaker arrangement you want, and whether features such as simultaneous TV-speaker playback or wireless operation matter to you. LG’s guidance explains setup and its own supported features, but does not establish a universal need to upgrade or a single best soundbar.
