To reduce background noise on calls, first make sure your calling app is using the wireless headset’s microphone, then adjust the app’s microphone noise suppression. This helps reduce what callers hear. If the problem is noise you hear yourself, look for a headset with active noise cancellation (ANC)—a separate feature.
First identify who hears the background noise
If other people hear your fan, typing, or nearby conversations, focus on the microphone input and microphone noise suppression. If you hear office noise while listening to the call, focus on ANC or reducing the noise around you. A headset can have one feature, both, or neither.
- Microphone noise reduction: Intended to reduce room sound transmitted to other participants. Headset listings may describe this as a noise-canceling microphone or microphone array.
- ANC: Reduces ambient sound the wearer hears through the headset. It does not, by itself, establish that callers will hear less room noise.
Check the microphone and call settings
- Confirm the input device. In the calling app’s audio or device settings, select the wireless headset’s microphone rather than the computer’s built-in microphone or another input.
- Turn on or adjust microphone noise suppression. Available controls and labels depend on the app and platform.
- Make a short test call. Ask whether the other person still hears the room, and check whether your own voice sounds clear. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped.
Adjust noise suppression in Microsoft Teams
Microsoft says noise suppression is on by default in Teams. You can change it in Settings > Devices or in a meeting’s Audio settings. Options can vary by platform; Microsoft describes Auto, Low, and High on iOS.
- Auto: Lets Teams choose a suppression level.
- Low: Microsoft recommends this for persistent sounds such as a fan or air conditioner.
- High: Suppresses background sound that is not speech, according to Microsoft.
Microsoft also advises turning suppression off when using a high-fidelity microphone in a quiet environment. Processing is not always an improvement: if your voice sounds unnatural or loses detail, test a lower setting or disable suppression.

Microsoft notes that background sounds such as shuffling papers, slamming doors, and barking dogs can distract other people when your microphone is on in a Teams call. See Microsoft’s instructions for reducing background noise in Teams and its Teams audio settings guidance.
If you use Zoom with Bluetooth headphones
Zoom warns that other meeting participants may experience lower microphone audio quality when Bluetooth headphones are used. This is a possible connection or platform issue, not evidence that all Bluetooth headsets perform poorly. Check that Zoom selected the headset microphone; if audio remains degraded, try another connection option supported by your headset and computer.

Reduce noise at its source
Noise suppression can help, but it may not remove every sound. Where practical, move away from a fan or other steady noise, close a door, or pause nearby sources during calls. Make these changes especially when the sound is loud or close to the microphone; app processing and headset features are not a substitute for a quieter input environment.

If callers still hear the room after you have confirmed the input and adjusted the app, compare models by microphone noise-reduction features, compatibility with your calling platform, connection type, and whether you also need ANC for your own listening. Product descriptions identify features, not independent proof that one headset will outperform another in your office. Verify the current model configuration and platform compatibility before buying.
