Before buying a mini PC for gaming or workstation work, match its graphics hardware to your actual workload, then verify the exact model’s memory and storage options, sustained cooling, ports, and upgrade path. A processor name or product-family label alone cannot tell you whether a particular configuration will meet your needs.

Start with the work you need it to do

Write down the games or applications you plan to run and the resolution, settings, and monitor setup you expect. Gaming at 1080p with reduced settings, rendering with GPU acceleration, and editing large media projects place different demands on a compact PC. Compare complete configurations against those demands—not just CPU names.

Graphics class is often the first dividing line. Integrated graphics can suit lighter gaming, while a mini PC with a discrete laptop GPU is generally the stronger fit for demanding games and GPU-accelerated creative work. Neither label guarantees a particular result: performance depends on the exact system, software, settings, and workload.

Integrated graphics: check the target settings

In PC Gamer’s 2026 comparison, a Minisforum Venus UM790 Pro with Radeon 780M integrated graphics averaged 145 fps in Forza Motorsport at 1080p, Ultra, ray tracing off, with FSR2 Balanced. The ASUS ROG NUC 970 with a mobile RTX 4070 averaged 47 fps under the same listed test conditions. That result belongs to those two reviewed systems and that test; it is not an FPS forecast for another game or mini PC. See PC Gamer’s mini PC testing.

PC Gamer describes Radeon 890M integrated graphics as suitable for light or moderate 1080p gaming in the configuration it discusses, while cautioning against expecting modern games to run at 1440p with high settings. Treat that as guidance for the cited configuration, not a universal promise for every PC using the same graphics family.

Discrete laptop graphics: confirm the exact GPU

ASUS’s ROG GR70 pairs a Ryzen 9 9955HX3D with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX laptop GPU and triple-fan cooling. The retail GPU and memory/storage configuration can vary, so confirm the exact SKU before relying on a product-line description. A discrete-GPU mini PC is a different class of purchase from an integrated-graphics model, but its capabilities still depend on the installed GPU and the workload.

Check memory and storage on the exact configuration

Before buying, look up the chosen SKU or barebone bundle’s memory type, number of sockets, maximum supported capacity, and whether memory is soldered or replaceable. Do the same for SSDs: count the M.2 slots, check their supported interface and lane width, and confirm whether an expansion feature occupies a slot.

  • Memory: Verify DDR generation, SO-DIMM or other form factor, socket count, maximum capacity, and whether the installed RAM can be replaced.
  • Storage: Check the included SSD capacity, M.2 size, interface, lane configuration, and how many sockets remain available after installation.
  • Bundle and revision: Confirm whether you are buying a configured system or a barebone, and check the specification for that exact revision.

Memory layouts differ even within a brand

MINISFORUM says most of its mini PCs have accessible SO-DIMM and M.2 slots, but identifies the MS-S1 as an exception with soldered LPDDR5x memory. That is manufacturer guidance about its own products, not a rule for other brands. ASUS says the GR70 allows DDR5 SO-DIMM installation. The AI X1 Pro specification lists two DDR5 SO-DIMM sockets and support for up to 128GB. Check the vendor’s specification for the exact system rather than assuming a whole range shares one layout. See MINISFORUM’s buying guide, ASUS’s ROG GR70 specifications, and the AI X1 Pro product specification.

Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.

Count usable M.2 slots, not just advertised slots

The AI X1 Pro lists three M.2 2280 NVMe slots: two PCIe 4.0 x4 and one PCIe 4.0 x1. Those connections are not equivalent in bandwidth. By contrast, the M1 Pro-125H page says its OCuLink port uses one M.2 slot, so enabling that expansion path can reduce storage capacity. These examples show why slot count and lane configuration both matter. See the M1 Pro-125H specifications.

Decide whether external graphics are practical

An eGPU is a system-level setup, not simply a dock you plug into any small computer. First confirm that the exact mini PC has a supported OCuLink, USB4, or Thunderbolt connection for the intended use. Then account for the dock or enclosure, desktop graphics card, power supply, cable, physical clearance, and setup. A connector’s shape alone does not prove eGPU support.

The M1 Pro-125H lists USB4 ports that support eGPU docks as well as OCuLink, while noting that OCuLink uses an M.2 slot. The AI X1 Pro lists OCuLink PCIe 4.0 x4 and USB4 up to 40Gbps. MINISFORUM describes its DEG2 dock as having a 64Gbps OCuLink port, a PCIe x16 slot, and two Thunderbolt 5 ports; its listed package contents include an OCuLink cable and graphics-card holder. The dock listing does not establish compatibility with every mini PC, nor does it say that a desktop GPU and its power supply are included. Check the connection and package details for the exact products you intend to combine. See MINISFORUM’s DEG2 listing.

MINISFORUM’s buying guide says OCuLink can connect an external desktop graphics card with “very minor performance drop” and describes it as “much better than using USB4.” This is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent benchmark; it should not be treated as a guaranteed performance difference for your setup.

Assess cooling for sustained workloads

Compact systems have limited room for cooling hardware, so consider behavior under sustained work as well as brief bursts. Long gaming sessions, renders, and other extended workloads can make cooling and noise as important as peak specifications. Look for information tied to the exact model and test conditions; vendor figures from different products are not directly comparable unless they share a test protocol.

ASUS describes the GR70 as using triple-fan cooling. MINISFORUM reports for the M1 Pro an idle temperature of 47°C, a full-load temperature below 86°C, and noise below 45dB in Performance Mode, at a stated room temperature of 23°C. These are manufacturer-reported figures for that product, not a controlled comparison against the GR70 or another mini PC. See the M1 Pro-125H product page.

Match ports and networking to your setup

Check every connection you will actually use: monitor outputs and supported display standards, USB data and display capabilities, wired and wireless networking, and ports for peripherals or external storage. Count the monitors and verify the output standard, resolution, and refresh rate you need; port names alone may not establish support for a particular display setup.

For example, ASUS lists Wi-Fi 7, 2.5GbE, USB4 Gen 3×2 at 40Gbps, two HDMI 2.1 outputs, and two DisplayPort 2.1 outputs for the GR70. The AI X1 Pro lists dual 2.5G LAN, HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 2.0, USB4, and an SD card slot. These are product-specific specifications, not features to assume across a brand’s mini PCs. Verify the outputs and networking on the configuration you are considering.

Compare total cost and the upgrade path

Compare complete systems at the configuration you will use, including any memory or storage you must add. If you plan to use external graphics, include the dock or enclosure, GPU, power supply, and required cable in the budget. A lower-priced barebone may not be the lower-cost choice once it is equipped, and an advertised upgrade path is useful only if the exact system has compatible, available slots.

  • Does the configured graphics hardware meet your target workload and settings?
  • Is memory included, replaceable, and sufficient—or does the system require a compatible upgrade?
  • How many usable storage slots remain, and do their interfaces fit your SSD plans?
  • Does the chosen expansion connection support the eGPU setup you intend to use?
  • Are cooling, noise, monitor outputs, and networking suitable for your sustained workload and desk setup?
