To check whether a Samsung Galaxy phone is still receiving security updates, look up its exact model on Samsung’s Security Updates Scope page, then check the security patch installed on the phone. The model list shows whether Samsung currently lists the device for monthly or quarterly updates; the phone’s update screen shows what it has received so far. A phone saying it is up to date does not, by itself, confirm how long Samsung will continue supporting it.
1. Find the phone’s exact model
- Open Settings > About phone.
- Record the full model name or model number, including the variant if shown. A family name such as “Galaxy S” or “Galaxy A” is not specific enough to check support.
2. Check Samsung’s current update schedule
Open Samsung’s Security Updates Scope page and search for the exact model. Samsung groups selected devices by update cadence, including monthly and quarterly schedules. The page is updated as support periods expire, so use the live list rather than an old model list copied elsewhere.
- Listed monthly: Samsung currently includes the model in its monthly schedule. This is a planned cadence, not a promise that every patch will arrive on the same day.
- Listed quarterly: Samsung currently includes it in its quarterly schedule.
- Not listed: The model is not on Samsung’s currently published regular-update scope. Do not infer a precise end date unless Samsung has published one for that model.
Samsung says some carriers may provide quarterly updates for applicable devices that appear on the monthly list. It also says timing varies by region and model, and availability can depend on the network provider.
3. Check the security patch installed on the phone
- Open Settings > Security and privacy > Updates > Security update. Menu labels can differ by model and software version.
- Check the displayed security update information, then tap Check for updates if that option appears.
Samsung’s Galaxy update instructions describe this area for checking security updates. A message that the phone is up to date means no newer update is currently offered to that device; it does not prove the model remains on Samsung’s regular support schedule.

For more software details, open Settings > About phone > Software information. Do not confuse the Android version with the security patch level: they describe different aspects of the installed software.
What “up to seven years” means
Samsung’s current scope page says that, as of January 2024, it is extending security-update support for Galaxy devices by up to seven years. Samsung’s 2025 Sustainability Report also describes Galaxy mobile security-update support as lasting up to seven years. “Up to” is a ceiling for eligible devices, not a guarantee that every Galaxy phone receives seven years of updates. Check the exact model against the live scope.

Samsung’s 2022 announcement of up to five years of security updates applied to select devices from that generation, including named Galaxy S22 and S21, Z Fold3 and Flip3, and Tab S8 families. That older commitment describes those eligible devices; it is not a universal term for every Galaxy model or a contradiction of the later expanded policy. Why a Galaxy phone may not show an expected update
A delayed patch does not necessarily mean support has ended. Samsung says carriers develop and release software updates, and an update may be distributed in waves. A carrier-sold unlocked phone can still depend on the original carrier’s release schedule.

- Confirm the exact model variant and the market in which the phone is used.
- Check the original carrier’s software-update information.
- Allow time for a staged rollout, then check again.
- Try Samsung Smart Switch on a computer; Samsung says it may prompt you to install an available update.
Smart Switch is an alternate installation route, not a way to extend a model’s support period. Samsung also notes that a planned security update can be delayed by a regular operating-system upgrade; the OS upgrade will include up-to-date patches when delivered. Some chipset-vendor patches may arrive in a later package, so monthly schedule placement does not mean every patch reaches every phone simultaneously.
