To make your Samsung Galaxy automatically download software updates, open Settings > Software update and enable Auto download over Wi-Fi. On some models, the option is inside the three-dot menu. Automatic downloading does not necessarily install each update automatically; you may still need to start installation.
Turn on automatic update downloads
- Open Settings.
- Tap Software update. Some devices or carriers may label this System updates.
- Turn on Auto download over Wi-Fi. If you do not see that option, tap the three-dot menu, select Auto download, then choose Using Wi-Fi only. Samsung documents both screen layouts in its US update instructions and UK update instructions.
- When an update has downloaded, follow the phone’s on-screen instructions to install it.
What automatic updates do—and do not do
The setting automates downloading over Wi-Fi. It does not promise that every ordinary software or security update will install without your input. Samsung’s UK instructions tell users to tap Install now when an update is available, while its Russia support guidance says to start installation at a convenient time after the automatic download. Some device manuals describe emergency security updates as an exception that may install automatically; that does not mean all updates will.
If you cannot find the setting
Samsung says screens and settings can differ by model, software version, and carrier. Check the Software update screen’s three-dot menu, or use Settings search for Auto download or Software update. Older Android versions may use different wording and may show separate controls for automatic checking and Wi-Fi-only downloading; Samsung provides older-version guidance as well.

Before installing an update
- Prefer Wi-Fi. Samsung recommends Wi-Fi because updates can use substantial data. Choosing Wi-Fi-only downloading helps keep an update from using your mobile data allowance, as explained in its UK update guidance.
- Plan for downtime. During installation, the phone cannot be used, files are inaccessible, and calls—including emergency calls—cannot be made. Follow the prompts and start installation when you can leave the device unavailable.
- Keep app updates separate. This setting is for phone software. Google Play Store and Galaxy Store apps have their own auto-update controls; Samsung’s update guidance distinguishes system updates from app updates.
- Check support for your model separately. Turning on downloads cannot add security patches to a model that no longer receives them. Samsung directs users to its security update information by model to check coverage.
