The right choice depends on your location, the assets and networks you need, the full purchase cost, whether you need external transfers, and whether you want a provider to hold your crypto or to control the keys yourself.
Compare the options by what you need to do
| Option | What it offers | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Kraken | Kraken describes its services in its Coinbase comparison. Its Instant Buy service may include a displayed fee and a spread in the quoted price. | Final quoted cost, order method, funding method, assets, withdrawals, and eligibility where you live. |
| Robinhood Crypto | Robinhood advertises crypto purchases, recurring buys, external wallet transfers, and staking for certain assets. | Whether the asset and network you need are supported, whether the feature is available in your jurisdiction, costs, and custody terms. |
| Self-custody hardware wallet | A hardware wallet can help you manage crypto while you control the private keys. It does not replace an exchange or other purchase service when you need to buy crypto. | Recovery responsibilities and support for the specific asset, network, device model, and wallet software. |
This is a shortlist of documented options, not a universal ranking. Kraken’s comparison is published by Kraken, so treat its comparative descriptions as the provider’s own claims rather than an independent evaluation. Features, fees, and regional availability can change; confirm them with the provider before signing up or transferring funds.
How to compare buying costs
Look beyond the headline fee
Kraken says Instant Buy pricing can include a displayed fee and, where applicable, a spread incorporated into the price. The spread can vary with transaction size, asset, payment method, and market conditions. Check the actual quote for your intended purchase and compare the available order methods rather than relying on a single advertised percentage. See Kraken’s fee explanation.
Check the quote for your specific purchase
- Compare the amount of crypto you receive for the total amount you pay, including any displayed charges.
- Use the same asset, purchase amount, and funding method when comparing services.
- Check whether the platform supports the payment method and transaction type you intend to use.
Check assets, transfers, and local eligibility
A platform’s advertised feature does not guarantee that you can use it for every asset or in every jurisdiction. Kraken says verified-residence restrictions can affect available assets and services. Robinhood says some services, including staking, are not available in all jurisdictions. Confirm access for your location and the specific asset before depositing money or moving crypto.

Robinhood advertises transfers to external wallets, but transfer support should be checked for the particular asset and network you plan to use. Sending crypto to an incompatible address or network can result in loss. Do not assume that because a platform lists an asset, it supports every network associated with that asset.
Choose between provider custody and self-custody
Centralized account
With an exchange account, the provider holds crypto on your behalf. This can be convenient for buying and managing assets through one service, but your access and available actions depend on the provider’s supported features and rules.

Self-custody wallet
Coinbase Help describes a self-custody wallet as giving the user direct control of crypto private keys. During setup, a recovery phrase is provided; keep it secure, because losing it can mean losing access. Unlike an exchange account, self-custody makes you responsible for protecting the keys and recovery information. Read Coinbase Help’s explanation of self-custody.
A hardware wallet is one physical approach to self-custody. Ledger describes its devices as keeping private keys offline and says its Ledger Wallet interface can connect to transaction providers, subject to provider and country availability. Ledger lists the Nano S Plus among its products; check the current device and software details at Ledger and Ledger’s Nano S Plus product page.

Verify compatibility before transferring
Hardware-wallet support can differ by device model and wallet software. Check the asset and network in the manufacturer’s current compatibility information before sending crypto. Trezor provides a model- and software-specific supported-assets list; Ledger also publishes asset support information. A hardware wallet is useful only if it supports the crypto and network you intend to manage.

Robinhood states that cryptocurrency held through Robinhood Crypto is not FDIC insured or SIPC protected. Do not assume that protections associated with bank deposits or brokerage services cover crypto held through a crypto service. Review the provider’s current disclosures and custody terms at its Robinhood Crypto page.

A practical selection checklist
- Confirm that the service is available where you live and that your required features are enabled there.
- Check that it supports each asset you want, and confirm the network for any planned transfer.
- Compare the final purchase quote for your amount and payment method, including fees and any spread.
- Decide whether provider custody or self-custody fits your needs and responsibilities.
- If using a hardware wallet, verify compatibility for the exact model, asset, network, and wallet software before transferring funds.
