To set up a DJI Mini 5 Pro for its first flight, charge and prepare the aircraft and controller, activate the drone in DJI Fly while connected to the internet, install any prompted updates, choose conservative safety settings, and complete the preflight checks. Then confirm your launch site is safe and legal for your location and flight purpose.
1. Unpack and prepare the Mini 5 Pro
Check the contents against the combo you bought: packages can differ in controller, battery count, and included accessories. Do not assume every box includes the same items. DJI’s Mini 5 Pro beginner guide provides the model’s setup instructions; it is localized for Japan, so treat its device guidance as manufacturer instructions rather than local flight-law advice.
- Install DJI Fly on the mobile device you will use with the aircraft. Follow the current DJI Fly installation instructions for your device.
- Remove the gimbal protector before powering up or flying.
- Wake and charge the battery. Press the Intelligent Flight Battery power button briefly to wake it. DJI recommends its official charger and says the battery can be charged through the aircraft’s USB-C port or the Two-Way Charging Hub. The aircraft cannot be charged while it is powered on. Fully charge the battery before flying.
- Charge the controller. Connect it through USB-C. To power it on, press the power button briefly and then hold it for about two seconds.
For storage, DJI’s guide states that the aircraft has 42 GB of internal storage and supports a microSD card for additional space. A card is not required for activation or takeoff; the guide does not specify a recommended card capacity or speed.
2. Activate the aircraft and handle updates
First-use activation takes place in DJI Fly. Keep the mobile device connected to the internet throughout the activation flow. DJI says the aircraft is bound to the controller used during activation; its activation and device-binding help also describes DJI-account binding and lists the Mini 5 Pro as an applicable model.

- Power on the aircraft and controller.
- Connect the controller to your mobile device if your controller setup requires it, then open DJI Fly.
- Connect to or link the aircraft if the app asks, and follow the on-screen activation prompts while online.
- If DJI Fly offers a firmware update, follow its prompts. Do not switch off the aircraft or close the app during the update. DJI says the aircraft shuts down when the update finishes; restart it manually afterward.
DJI says the RC-N3 controller does not need activation. For combo sets, DJI’s guide says the aircraft and controller are linked at shipment. If you are using an RC 2 or another included controller, follow the app’s prompts for the controller and aircraft you actually have.
3. Choose conservative first-flight settings
- Flight mode: Start in Normal (N) mode. DJI notes obstacle sensing is automatically off in Sport (S) mode.
- Obstacle sensing: Choose “brake” or “bypass” in the obstacle-sensing setting. Sensing can help, but it does not make it safe to approach people, wires, branches, or other hazards.
- Return-to-Home altitude: Set it higher than the tallest nearby building or other obstacle along the return route. Make this decision before takeoff; Smart RTH can be triggered manually, by low battery, or by loss of controller signal, but RTH is not a substitute for a safe route or suitable launch site.
4. Complete the preflight check
Before each takeoff, check the aircraft and controller in this order:

- Confirm the battery is seated securely and the propellers are fitted correctly and are not damaged or deformed.
- Confirm the control sticks are properly fitted, then deploy all aircraft arms.
- Check battery levels on both the aircraft and controller.
- Remove the gimbal protector if it is still attached.
- Wait for the satellite-position icon in DJI Fly to remain steady white before takeoff.
If a propeller is damaged or deformed, replace it before flying. DJI sells a Mini 5 Pro Spare Propeller (Pair); spare propellers are useful to have available but are not required for activation or a first takeoff.
5. Pick a suitable practice location
DJI recommends a bright, open environment without obstacles or obstructions. Its beginner guide advises against flying toward people, animals, branches, wires, glass, or water surfaces, and says not to fly in rain, fog, or visibility below 100 m. The aircraft is not waterproof; DJI’s UK product listing advises returning and landing as soon as possible if rain begins, then allowing the aircraft to dry fully before use.

- Choose an open area with room to take off, hover, and land without passing over people or animals.
- Avoid wires, branches, glass, water, and other hard-to-see or hazardous obstacles.
- Do not fly in rain or fog, or when visibility is below DJI’s stated 100 m threshold.
- Keep a clear route for landing and for a possible return-to-home flight.
6. Check the rules where and why you fly
DJI instructs pilots to check the latest local rules before flight. Drone laws depend on jurisdiction, aircraft configuration, airspace, and purpose; a small aircraft does not automatically exempt every flight from registration or other requirements.
United States: recreational flights
For U.S. recreational operation, the FAA requires pilots to pass the Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) before flying and keep proof of completion. FAA guidance generally requires registration for recreational aircraft weighing more than 0.55 lb (250 g). Part 107 operations require registration regardless of weight, and a flight for a non-recreational purpose has different requirements. Before choosing a launch site, check current airspace restrictions and authorization needs using FAA resources such as the FAA recreational flyer guidance, Getting Started, and drone registration guidance, including B4UFLY and LAANC information.

European Union and United Kingdom
DJI’s UK listing identifies the Fly More Combo drone as C0-certified and the Fly More Combo Plus as C1-certified. DJI also says that fitting an Intelligent Flight Battery Plus to the C0 drone exceeds the C0/UK0 maximum take-off mass threshold. These statements are specific to the listed configurations and region; check current rules for the country and exact aircraft, battery, and combo you own.
Other locations
Check the current rules of your national aviation regulator and any local airspace restrictions before flying. Do not assume that a weight threshold or exemption used in one country applies elsewhere.

Optional extras after basic setup
- ND filter set: Optional for camera use; DJI says these filters reduce the light reaching the lens. They are not needed to activate or fly the aircraft.
- Two-Way Charging Hub: An optional way to charge batteries; DJI lists it among the Fly More Combo contents and as a charging option.
- DJI Care Refresh: DJI names this service in its guide. Its Care Refresh information says an eligible plan can be purchased within 48 hours after activation if it was not purchased with the aircraft. Check current regional terms and eligibility before relying on that window.
