A foldable phone is worth buying when you will regularly use what makes it different: a larger inner screen for multitasking and media, or a compact folded shape that is easier to carry. If those benefits are occasional, the higher purchase price and potentially expensive screen repairs are harder to justify. Compare the exact model’s local price, repair quote, warranty, and accidental-damage coverage before deciding.
What does a foldable phone give you?
Book-style Fold: more screen when opened
A book-style foldable opens into a larger display that can be useful for multitasking, video, and gaming. It is the better fit if you expect to use that expanded screen often enough to make carrying and paying for a foldable worthwhile. TechRadar’s foldable-phone guide notes that foldables typically cost more than slab phones with comparable capabilities.
Flip-style phone: a smaller folded form
A Flip folds into a more compact shape. Its main appeal is portability rather than the larger working area of a book-style phone. Choose based on the behavior you expect to use regularly, not the novelty of the hinge.
What do foldable repairs cost?
Samsung’s US support page lists the following suggested prices for Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 screen service. “Screen repair” and “screen-module replacement” are different services: Samsung says module replacement includes the screen, metal bezel, and battery, while screen repair replaces fewer parts. Prices may vary by region and authorized service location and exclude taxes and fees.

These are US suggested prices, not a forecast that a phone will need repair and not global prices. Samsung says mail-in foldable repair is available and estimates five to seven business days for mail-in service; same-day or next-day repair may be available at some authorized walk-in centers. How durable are current foldables?
Manufacturer design claims are not lifespan measurements
Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold7’s third-generation Armor FlexHinge is 27% thinner and 43% lighter than its predecessor. Samsung also says its Ultra Thin Glass is 50% thicker than the Fold6’s and that a titanium-based lattice improves durability by 64% compared with carbon fiber. These are Samsung’s design and material comparisons, not independent measurements of how long a phone lasts in ordinary use. Details are in Samsung’s durability description.

IP48 does not mean dustproof or beach-safe
Samsung’s UK buying guide says the Fold7 and Flip7 carry IP48 protection. Its explanation limits solid-object protection to objects greater than 1 mm and freshwater submersion to up to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes in laboratory conditions. Samsung explicitly says the phones are not dust- or sand-resistant and that water resistance can diminish with normal wear. Do not treat IP48 as protection against fine dust, sand, or every water exposure; see Samsung’s foldable-phone guide.
Inner-screen scratch tests have limits
TechRadar’s report on an extreme JerryRigEverything test of the Flip7 found that its inner screen was more vulnerable to scratching than the outer screen. The report says the test conditions are unlikely to reflect ordinary use. It illustrates the need to treat the inner display carefully; it does not establish a typical failure rate or expected lifespan. Read TechRadar’s test report.

There is no comparable, independently verified long-term failure-rate or ordinary-ownership lifespan dataset established here for current foldables versus conventional phones. Hinge and material claims, or a deliberately extreme scratch test, cannot answer how long a particular device will last.
What about warranty and accidental damage?
A manufacturer warranty and accidental-damage protection address different situations. Motorola’s Razr 2025 support page says physical damage such as a broken screen or housing is not covered by its standard warranty. It points to MotoCare for accidental-damage coverage and describes an extended service plan for mechanical breakdown lasting 12 months, with deductibles of $5–$99 depending on the device. The page says the plan can be purchased while the device is in warranty, up to 12 months. These terms depend on plan and market, so verify the current coverage, exclusions, deductible, and enrollment deadline for your model and locale at Motorola support.

For Samsung’s US Certified Re-Newed Fold7 and Flip7, the company’s April 22, 2026 announcement states a one-year manufacturer warranty and says the devices may be eligible for Care+. That statement applies to those certified-renewed US units; check the exact device’s terms rather than assuming new, renewed, or other-region products have identical coverage. Price examples need their market and condition attached. Samsung’s April 22, 2026 US announcement listed certified-renewed 256 GB models starting at $1,699 for the Fold7 and $939 for the Flip7. TechRadar’s 2026 buying guide listed the Motorola Razr 2025 at $699.99 in its market comparison. These are not like-for-like devices or conditions, and prices and availability can change. Check current local offers for the same storage and condition before comparing.

- Use case: Decide whether you will often use the Fold’s expanded display or the Flip’s compact folded form.
- Up-front price: Compare current local prices for matching storage and condition, including whether a device is new or certified renewed.
- Repair exposure: Check inner- and outer-screen service separately and confirm whether the quote is for screen repair or a full module replacement.
- Coverage: Verify what the standard warranty excludes and whether accidental-damage coverage is available for your exact device, market, and purchase date.
- Environment: If you regularly use a phone around sand, fine dust, or water, account for Samsung’s stated IP48 limitations where applicable.
For a book-style option, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 is one specific model with published US repair pricing. The relevant question is not whether foldables are universally durable or worthwhile, but whether the model’s particular screen or portability benefit is valuable enough to you to justify its price and repair exposure.
