For most new players, start with the Tutorial or Practice Range, then try Practice Vs. AI before joining Quick Match. That sequence gives you room to learn movement, hero abilities, and objectives before playing against people. Choose a PvE mission if you want cooperative, mission-based play and one is available; save Competitive for when you want ranked progression.
How PvE and PvP differ in Marvel Rivals
| Mode | Opponents and goal | Best fit | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| PvP: Quick Match | Two teams of six players compete around objectives. | Players ready to face other people in the game’s central team-based format. | Listed in the mode catalog. |
| PvP: Competitive | Objective-based matches between two teams of six, with rank progression. | Players who specifically want ranked play. | Listed in the mode catalog. |
| PvE missions | One to four players work against AI enemies and mission objectives. The catalog lists Path to Doomsday: Avengers: Age of Ultron and a Marvel Zombies mission mode. | Players who prefer cooperative missions over matches against other players. | The catalog lists these experiences, but does not establish that either is live on October 7, 2026. Check the in-game mode selector. |
Marvel Rivals is presented by its publisher as a team-based PvP shooter. The catalog describes Quick Match and Competitive as objective-based PvP, with rank progression distinguishing Competitive. [NetEase Games launch announcement; mode catalog]
Which mode should a new player choose first?
1. Learn the controls and heroes
Start with the basic Tutorial for movement and shooting. Hero Tutorials introduce abilities and classes, while objective tutorials explain how match goals work. The Practice Range lets you try abilities and Team-Up Abilities without entering a live match. [mode catalog]
2. Try Practice Vs. AI
When you are ready to play a match, Practice Vs. AI lets you face bots at varying difficulty. Use it to connect what you learned about a hero with movement and objective play. It is a practice option, not evidence that PvE is inherently easier or a better way to learn than playing people.

3. Move to Quick Match when ready
Quick Match is the practical next step if you want to play the standard team format against people without making rank progression your goal. You do not need to master every hero first; focus on understanding your chosen character’s abilities and the objective.
Does Marvel Rivals have PvE?
Yes. The mode catalog lists mission-based PvE options, including a one-to-four-player Path to Doomsday: Avengers: Age of Ultron mission to destroy Ultron and his mechanical forces, plus a one-to-four-player Marvel Zombies mission mode. These are a fit for cooperative, objective-led play when available. [mode catalog]

Availability is the qualification: the catalog does not confirm which PvE modes are active on October 7, 2026, and the official October 1, 2026 patch notes do not identify the live PvE rotation. Check the in-game mode selector rather than planning around a particular event. [October 1, 2026 patch notes]
When should you try Competitive?
Competitive is for players who want rank progression alongside objective-based team matches. It is not the default first match recommendation: the tutorials, range, and bot practice provide ways to get oriented beforehand. Choose it when ranked progress is part of what you want from the game, rather than assuming it is required to learn the basics. [mode catalog]
Bottom line: choose by what you want from a match
- New to the controls: Tutorial, Hero Tutorials, and Practice Range.
- Want a lower-stakes way to try match flow: Practice Vs. AI.
- Ready for team play against people: Quick Match.
- Prefer cooperative missions: check whether a PvE event appears in the mode selector.
- Want ranked progression: Competitive.
This is a recommendation based on the documented purposes of the modes, not a measured comparison of which one teaches beginners faster or is more enjoyable.
