The Surface Laptop Ultra pairs Microsoft’s announced 15-inch mini-LED display and up to 128GB of unified memory with NVIDIA’s Blackwell-based RTX Spark platform. The concept is aimed at creators, developers, and AI builders who want CUDA-capable Windows hardware for demanding local workloads. Early demonstrations looked smooth, but they were controlled pre-release demos—not independent tests of a retail laptop. Microsoft’s announcement still carries a pre-release caveat, so treat reported launch details as provisional and check Microsoft Store for current regional configurations and availability.
What is the Surface Laptop Ultra?
Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop Ultra on May 31, 2026, calling it its most powerful Surface Laptop and saying it was engineered with NVIDIA and optimized for RTX Spark. The company positions it for creators, developers, and AI builders working with large scenes, long compile cycles, local models, and large datasets. That is Microsoft’s intended audience, not an independent finding that the laptop is the best choice for every such workflow. Microsoft’s announcement describes the device and warns that it is pre-release; features may change and vary by region, and sale or delivery is subject to regulatory approval.
Microsoft’s announced hardware
Microsoft says the laptop combines a Blackwell RTX GPU, full CUDA support, and up to 128GB of unified memory. Its memory pool can be allocated across CPU and GPU workloads. Microsoft also claims up to 1 petaflop of AI compute and says the laptop can run models with up to 120 billion parameters locally. The petaflop figure is based on NVIDIA’s theoretical FP4 TOPS using sparsity; it is a vendor specification, not an independent measurement of sustained application performance.
The announced display is a 15-inch mini-LED PixelSense Ultra touchscreen with 262 pixels per inch and peak HDR brightness up to 2,000 nits. Microsoft calls it its brightest shipped display and says the haptic touchpad is the largest it has put on a Surface. Listed connections include HDMI, USB-C, USB-A, SD card, and a headphone jack; finishes are Platinum and Nightfall. Microsoft says the design considers repairability, but its announcement does not establish parts availability, repair costs, or a serviceability rating.

What RTX Spark adds—and what Windows compatibility means
RTX Spark is an Arm-based Windows platform, rather than a conventional x86 laptop platform. Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog describes platform configurations with up to 6,144 Blackwell RTX cores, up to 20 Arm CPU cores, and up to 128GB of unified memory. These are platform maxima; they do not confirm the exact configuration of every Surface retail model. Microsoft says Windows includes workload scheduling and power and thermal management work for the platform. Microsoft’s platform overview also explains that Prism emulates 32-bit and 64-bit x86 applications that have not been built for Arm.
Emulation broadens the software that may run, but it is not a guarantee that every app, feature, plug-in, driver, peripheral, or game will work as expected. Microsoft names Adobe Photoshop and Premiere, Blender, DaVinci Resolve, MATLAB, and other creator and developer tools in a mix of native and emulated support. Check the current version of each essential application and its dependencies before relying on it professionally. CUDA support is especially relevant if your work depends on NVIDIA’s GPU computing ecosystem; it does not by itself establish compatibility with a specific workflow.

NVIDIA’s 2026 RTX Spark release likewise describes a 20-core Grace CPU, a 6,144-CUDA-core Blackwell GPU, and up to 128GB of unified memory. NVIDIA cites examples including 90GB 3D scenes, 12K video editing, 120-billion-parameter language models, and 1440p gaming above 100 frames per second. Those are NVIDIA platform claims, not independent results for the Surface Laptop Ultra. The model-size and performance claims should not be read as a promise that every model or application will run at a useful speed on every configuration.
What the hands-on demos showed
Event impressions offer a glimpse of the design and demo experience, not a substitute for testing a production unit. Tom’s Guide’s June 3, 2026 hands-on lists a 15-inch, 2880 × 1920 mini-LED display, up to 128GB of LPDDR5X unified memory, the announced ports, and a weight of 4.5 pounds. Its reported $3,000–$7,000 range was explicitly labeled rumored and should not be treated as official pricing. Read Tom’s Guide’s hands-on.

Windows Central’s June 2 event report describes a thicker, heavier-feeling design than a regular Surface Laptop, a notably large haptic touchpad, and an unusual larger USB-C port. The author heard fans running at full speed during several demos, from a few feet away, while ordinary use seemed essentially silent. Those are one reporter’s observations under demo conditions, not measured retail noise or a battery-life assessment. Read Windows Central’s hands-on.
Windows Central also reports that games and apps shown ran smoothly, including some under Prism emulation. Microsoft and NVIDIA did not provide FPS figures or detailed benchmarks, and some applications shown were emulated. That is encouraging as a demonstration, but it does not establish retail performance, compatibility across a game library, or gaming as the laptop’s primary purpose. The first wave was not marketed as gaming machines.

Price and availability: check the live regional listing
On October 7, 2026, Axios reported a $2,599 starting price and availability beginning October 16, describing the product as “Surface Ultra.” That is timely reporting, but Microsoft’s product announcement still labels the laptop pre-release, and the live Microsoft product listing could not be verified in the materials available here. See Axios’s launch report. Before buying, confirm the model name, configuration, price, preorder or in-stock status, and delivery date in the Microsoft Store for your country; the reported starting price does not establish the price or availability of a particular configuration or region.

A useful comparison starts with the work you need to do, not with platform claims alone. Microsoft and NVIDIA describe the potential of RTX Spark, but the available hands-on reports do not provide independent benchmarks for a final Surface retail unit.

Tom’s Hardware reported an initial 110W thermal-design figure on June 4, then added Microsoft’s correction: “Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra is not targeting a 110w sustained TDP. Final power will be disclosed closer to availability.” The 110W figure is therefore not a confirmed sustained power target. Read Tom’s Hardware’s report and correction.
