If you can choose only one device, a laptop is usually the safer choice for college—unless your department confirms that a tablet meets your course and exam requirements. Tablets are genuinely useful for handwritten notes and PDF markup, but a keyboard does not make every mobile tablet compatible with desktop software or secure testing tools.

How to choose between a laptop and a tablet for college

Start with the requirements of your actual program, not a general claim that one device is best for every student. University IT guidance commonly favors a laptop or desktop as the primary computer because mobile operating systems may not support required applications, all learning-management-system features, or secure exam software. For example, Western University of Health Sciences, MCPHS, Iowa State University, and the University of Saskatchewan each describe limits that can make a tablet a poor stand-in for a full computer.

That is a conditional recommendation, not a universal rule. Requirements differ by school, course, and software. A tablet can be a good primary device if your program verifies that its applications, files, online classes, and exams work on it. Otherwise, choose a supported laptop and consider a tablet as a companion for reading and handwritten work.

What each device does better

College task Laptop Tablet What to verify
Required applications and exams Safer when a course needs full Windows or macOS software, specialized applications, or secure testing tools. Mobile versions may lack required features. A tablet running a full desktop operating system is a different case from an iOS or Android tablet. Ask which apps and exam tools are required, and confirm operating-system and processor support.
Notes and course materials Works well for typed notes, research, and general assignments. Convenient for handwriting, reading, and annotating PDFs with a compatible stylus. Consider whether handwriting or marking up readings is important to your study routine.
Long typing assignments A physical keyboard and full computer environment are standard. A keyboard accessory can make typing easier, but does not itself add desktop-app compatibility. Check the keyboard’s separate cost and confirm that your apps and file formats work.
Online classes Can meet video-class needs when it has the required camera, microphone, speakers, and internet access. May have those features too, but course and app support still matter. Check conferencing, camera, microphone, internet, and exam requirements.
Specialized majors May be required when a program specifies a supported PC or Mac, operating system, or processor. Can complement a computer for reading and notes, but should not replace one without program approval. Confirm with the department or school before buying.

When a laptop is the better primary device

A laptop is the safer default when your coursework depends on software designed for a full computer, when exams use software that does not support mobile operating systems, or when instructors expect features that are unavailable in a tablet version of a learning platform. MCPHS advises students to check syllabi for course-specific software, while Iowa State cautions that tablets and mobile devices can run into limits with course content, Canvas features, and software.

Processor architecture can matter as well as the operating system. WesternU says some required software may not work on ARM-based devices. The University of Saskatchewan notes that Intel- and AMD-based processors have broad compatibility, while some specialized software may not support ARM processors. These are institution-specific cautions; ask your department which exact configurations it supports.

For some specialized applications, a campus computer lab may be an option. Iowa State describes labs as useful for specialty software, but not as a replacement for personal computer access for ordinary coursework. Ask how often you would need the application and whether you can reliably use a lab when required.

When a tablet makes sense

A tablet has a clear advantage if you prefer handwriting notes, reading on screen, and marking up PDFs. The University of Michigan’s accessibility resource identifies tablet handwriting and PDF notes among useful study approaches, alongside options such as audio notes, transcription, and split-screen review. These are task-specific benefits, not evidence that one device improves academic results.

A compatible stylus supports handwriting and markup, while a keyboard can make longer typing more practical. Apple describes these uses for its own devices; that manufacturer guidance does not establish compatibility with every college course. A keyboard changes how you enter text, not which desktop applications the tablet can run.

Some programs may accept a keyboard-equipped tablet for their particular requirements. Temple College of Education and Human Development describes a context in which a basic computer, laptop, or tablet with a keyboard may suffice, while warning that other courses can require unsupported software or campus labs. Its guidance refers to 2024–2025 and is specific to that program, so check the current requirements for your own classes.

Why the major and software matter more than the device label

“Tablet” covers different hardware and operating systems, and a tablet with a full desktop operating system is not equivalent to one running a mobile OS. Likewise, a laptop’s name alone does not guarantee support for a particular application or processor. Confirm the exact device configuration your courses accept.

Requirements can vary even within a broad field. Loughborough University says tablets work well for note-taking and online resources but have more limited software availability. It cites NX, an engineering drawing package that does not work on Apple devices, and recommends a Windows PC for engineering in its context. Treat that as a local example, not a rule for every engineering program or every course.

Check these requirements before you buy

  1. Read current course syllabi. List required applications, file formats, online platforms, and any exam or proctoring software.
  2. Check your department’s technology page. Confirm supported operating systems, processor types, and any device requirements for your program.
  3. Ask an adviser or department IT contact about anything unclear. In particular, verify whether a mobile tablet can complete assignments and exams without relying on a lab computer.
  4. Check online-class needs. Confirm requirements for webcam, microphone, speakers, conferencing applications, and reliable internet.
  5. Price the complete setup. If considering a tablet, include a compatible keyboard and stylus if you need them; check app and file compatibility separately.
  6. Decide whether a campus lab is a realistic supplement. Ask which specialized applications are available and whether you can access them when needed, rather than assuming a lab replaces a personal computer.

Is there a universal winner?

No. The reviewed university guidance supports a laptop as the safer one-device choice for many programs, while recognizing the tablet’s strengths for handwritten notes and PDF annotation. It does not establish that one category universally costs less, lasts longer, runs faster, or leads to better grades. Your department’s current requirements should decide the purchase.
