For recent fire activity in the Amazon, start with NASA’s FIRMS Global Fire Map. It displays satellite thermal-anomaly detections, generally available worldwide within three hours of observation. To investigate smoke, add an aerosol product; to assess estimated ground-level PM2.5, use a satellite-informed model rather than treating a smoke image or aerosol reading as a local air-quality measurement.
How do I find fires in the Amazon on satellite?
Use NASA FIRMS to explore recent active-fire detections. The service distributes near-real-time data from MODIS instruments aboard Terra and Aqua and VIIRS instruments aboard Suomi NPP, NOAA-20, and NOAA-21. NASA says global observations are generally available within three hours; its real-time availability exception applies to the United States and Canada, not the Amazon.
- Open the map: Go to the FIRMS Fire Map and zoom to the area you want to examine.
- Set the place and period: Define whether you mean the Amazon biome, the Amazon basin, or a particular country or state, and choose the time window relevant to your question. These boundaries are not interchangeable.
- Inspect detections: Check the sensor, observation time, stated pixel resolution, viewing geometry, and detection confidence. Treat the mapped point as a detection in a pixel, not as a mapped fire boundary.
- Export for analysis if needed: FIRMS supports downloads and services including shapefile, KML, text, and WMS. NASA Worldview and FIRMS email alerts are other ways to view or receive fire information.
What a hotspot does—and does not—show
FIRMS describes its points as active-fire detections or thermal anomalies, not ground-verified wildfire locations. A signal can be associated with fire, hot smoke, agriculture, or another heat source. The pixel containing a detection is not necessarily burning throughout, and cloud cover can hide fires from the satellite. A point is useful for locating a possible event, but it cannot by itself establish the fire type, exact perimeter, or total area burned. NASA’s active-fire data guidance explains how to interpret these detections.
Near-real-time or science-quality data?
Near-real-time files are useful for monitoring recent activity, but they are not necessarily the final version for retrospective analysis. NASA says near-real-time archive data are replaced by standard MODIS and VIIRS products as those become available—usually after two to three months, and sometimes as late as five months. For scientific work on past fires, use the standard science-quality product when available rather than relying only on the initial near-real-time archive. See NASA’s FIRMS archive guidance.

Where can I see satellite images of Amazon smoke?
Use satellite aerosol observations to examine smoke and aerosol loading across the atmosphere. A common measure is aerosol optical depth (AOD), also called aerosol optical thickness. It describes aerosol in the atmospheric column between the surface and the satellite; it is not a direct reading of what people are breathing at ground level. MODIS aerosol product documentation describes this column measurement in NASA’s aerosol product documentation.
Check retrieval quality and gaps
AOD is retrieved only under suitable observing conditions, so a blank or missing area does not necessarily mean the atmosphere is clear. NASA’s MAIAC guidance notes that retrievals are generally not reported above 4.2 km unless smoke or dust is detected, and that results can be unreliable in some high-altitude, very-low-AOD, non-flat-terrain, and bright-surface conditions. Check the product’s quality information, collection or version, cloud conditions, and intended use before interpreting individual pixels. See the NASA MAIAC user guide.

Why one image may understate smoke
A satellite view is a snapshot constrained by spatial resolution, revisit timing, and masking. NASA-hosted analysis of the FIREX-AQ campaign reports that satellite products can capture mean plume AOD while drastically underestimating a plume’s maximum AOD. Near a source, compare observations across times or products where possible; do not treat a single image as a complete record of smoke intensity or plume evolution. The study is available through Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics.
Does satellite data show air quality or PM2.5?
Not in the same way a ground monitor does. AOD measures aerosols through the atmospheric column, while PM2.5 refers to fine particles near the surface. Satellite-informed PM2.5 grids estimate that surface quantity by combining aerosol observations with atmospheric modeling and ground measurements; they are not live local monitoring stations.

For broad historical analysis, NASA’s annual global PM2.5 dataset V5.GL.04 covers 1998–2022. Its method uses GEOS-Chem to relate total-column AOD to near-surface PM2.5, then applies geographically weighted regression with ground-based measurements to adjust residual bias. Consult the dataset record for its coverage and documentation: NASA Open Data Portal: annual global PM2.5 grids.
If you need air-quality conditions for a particular day and place, do not convert a smoke image or AOD value into a surface PM2.5 claim. Identify whether the number comes from a satellite column retrieval, a model-derived surface estimate, or an in-situ ground measurement. Compare products only when their time periods, spatial scales, units, and quality controls are compatible.

How should I choose and compare satellite data?
Choose the product based on the quantity you need, then keep its limitations attached to the interpretation. A fire detection, an aerosol-column measurement, and an estimated surface concentration answer different questions.
| Question | Suitable data | What it represents | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where are recent possible fires? | NASA FIRMS MODIS and VIIRS active-fire detections | Thermal anomalies detected in satellite pixels | Not a verified fire perimeter or fire classification; clouds can obscure activity. |
| Where is smoke or aerosol in the atmosphere? | Satellite aerosol products such as MODIS AOD | Aerosol loading through the atmospheric column | Not a direct ground-level PM2.5 value; retrievals have quality and coverage gaps. |
| What is estimated historical surface PM2.5? | NASA annual global PM2.5 grids, V5.GL.04 | Modeled near-surface PM2.5 informed by satellite AOD and adjusted using ground measurements | Historical modeled estimates, not live local monitor readings; listed coverage is 1998–2022. |
For any analysis, record the geographic boundary and date range, product and collection/version, spatial resolution, observation timing or latency, quality flags, and whether the value is observed directly or derived by a model. These details determine whether two maps or datasets can be meaningfully compared.
