Nurdles are small plastic pellets made as raw material for manufacturing. They can escape during production, handling, or transport, reach waterways, and be mistaken for food by seabirds. Once swallowed, plastic may injure a bird’s digestive tract, obstruct it, or leave less room for nutritious food—but the effect varies, and the evidence here does not establish that nurdles cause seabird population declines.
What are nurdles?
Nurdles are pre-production plastic pellets: manufactured feedstock used to make plastic products. They are not simply fragments created when a finished consumer item breaks apart. Their small size makes them easy to lose and difficult to recover once spilled.
Pellets can escape at several points in the supply chain, including production and handling, and while being transported by rail or ship. From there, they can enter storm drains, rivers, and the ocean. A NOAA and University of New Hampshire Coastal Response Research Center workshop report published in July 2024 describes knowledge gaps and research needs concerning pre-production pellet spills: NOAA’s workshop report. A local government account also describes release pathways and cleanup difficulty, but should not be taken as a globally quantified spill rate: county notice.
How do plastic pellets harm seabirds?
Birds can mistake pellets for food
Floating plastic can resemble prey, so a seabird may swallow a pellet while feeding. A pellet provides no nutrition. A small amount may pass through, while a larger amount or a retained object can cause more serious problems; ingestion does not mean that every bird will be injured or die.

Plastic can injure or obstruct the digestive tract
NOAA’s Marine Debris Program explains that sharp or rough debris can cut the digestive system, potentially leading to infection or internal bleeding. Plastic can also block the digestive tract. The blockage may make a bird feel full and reduce its urge to eat, leaving less room for the nutrients it needs. These are physical mechanisms described for marine plastic debris broadly; they are relevant to pellets, but do not mean every pellet causes these outcomes.
The amount and type of plastic matter
Jace Tunnell, director of the Mission Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve, described the distinction in a 2020 NOAA interview: “Most of the time if they eat one or two or something it’s probably just passing through their system, but if they eat enough of em’ they feel like they’re full and there’s no nutritional value to these pellets, uh, for the animal.” The result depends on the bird and the amount and type of plastic involved.

What do seabird studies show?
A 2022 study of Great Shearwaters provides a quantitative example of plastic ingestion, but it measured plastic fragments generally—not nurdles alone. Researchers examined 217 birds collected from 2008–2019 at multiple Northwest and South Atlantic locations. They documented 2,328 plastic fragments in the birds’ ventriculi, an average of 9 fragments per bird. Counts, mass, and frequency differed by location, so those results are not a universal rate for seabirds or an estimate of pellet ingestion. The authors found no fragments of the same size or morphology in sampled sand lance, suggesting direct ingestion accounted for much of the plastic burden in the Massachusetts Bay part of the study. Read the study in NOAA’s repository.
NOAA reports that a review found over 40% of the seabird species studied had ingested plastic. That figure describes the share of species represented in the reviewed literature—not the share of individual birds affected, and not a nurdle-specific rate. What is known—and not known—about chemical effects?
Plastic can absorb pollutants from the environment or release additives used in its production. NOAA says more research is needed to understand how effects vary with plastic size and how long it remains in an animal, as well as how chemicals move through food webs. In the 2020 NOAA interview, Tunnell said of whether chemicals from pellets eaten by fish transfer into the muscle tissue people eat: “That link has not been made yet.” That statement is about that specific transfer question, not a general claim that plastics contain no chemicals. Read the NOAA interview.
Accordingly, these sources support treating chemical transfer as an unresolved question, not claiming a proven human-health consequence from eating fish exposed to nurdles. They also do not establish that nurdles have caused a seabird population decline.

How strong is the evidence for harm from nurdles specifically?
Pellet-specific evidence and broader plastic-ingestion evidence answer different questions. An EPA historical report documented pellet ingestion but said effects “have not been clearly defined or demonstrated conclusively in most wildlife” in the evidence available to that report. This is a dated assessment, not a summary of all later science. NOAA’s more general guidance describes physical harms from marine debris, while the Great Shearwater study and the seabird-species review concern plastic broadly rather than nurdles alone.
