If the PS5 must use Wi-Fi, put both devices on the same Wi-Fi network. Then improve signal conditions, pause downloads, and check both upload and download speeds. PlayStation says 5 Mbps is the minimum and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience—but those figures do not guarantee a smooth stream.
Start with the PS5 and Portal connection
Wire the PS5 to the router
PlayStation recommends connecting the PS5 to the router with an Ethernet cable for the best Portal Remote Play experience. This gives the console a wired connection while the Portal remains on Wi-Fi. No particular cable category or brand is specified. PlayStation’s Portal setup guidance recommends the wired PS5 setup.
If the PS5 uses Wi-Fi, use the same network
When Ethernet is not practical, connect the PS5 and Portal to the same Wi-Fi network. This is PlayStation’s recommendation for a wireless PS5 setup; the guidance does not provide comparative performance measurements for different router models or configurations.
Connect the Portal to 5 GHz Wi-Fi
PlayStation recommends a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection for the Portal. Some routers show 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz as separate network names; others combine them and steer devices between bands automatically. If your router has band steering, PlayStation recommends disabling it if possible while connecting the Portal. Router menus and available settings differ, so check the router maker’s or internet provider’s instructions if you cannot find the option.

The PS Portal manual lists IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac networking support. That specification does not establish that a particular Wi-Fi generation, router setting, or router model will improve your stream.
Improve signal and reduce network congestion
Move closer and reduce obstacles
Try using the Portal and PS5 closer to the router, and reduce obstacles between the devices and the access point where practical. These are among PlayStation’s Remote Play troubleshooting steps. If the stream improves when you move closer, weak or obstructed Wi-Fi coverage may be contributing to the problem.

Pause downloads and other heavy network activity
Pause downloads on devices using the network, then test Remote Play again. PlayStation includes pausing downloads in its troubleshooting guidance. You can also compare the connection on another device and check whether other household activity coincides with the interruptions.
Check speed, but judge stability too
PlayStation’s troubleshooting page specifies a minimum of 5 Mbps for both upload and download, and recommends at least 15 Mbps for both for best performance. Its Portal product page likewise says 5 Mbps is required and recommends 15 Mbps for a better play experience. These are PlayStation’s stated thresholds, not a promise of low lag or uninterrupted play: the company notes that Remote Play quality varies with the network environment.

If your measured speeds meet those figures but the stream still stutters, return to the stability checks: compare Wi-Fi in another location, move closer to the router, pause network-heavy activity, and use Ethernet for the PS5 if possible. The cited Portal guidance does not provide specific latency, jitter, or packet-loss thresholds, so a speed test alone cannot establish that the connection is suitable.

At home, you can adjust device placement, Wi-Fi settings, and competing network use. On public Wi-Fi, congestion, signal quality, or network restrictions may be beyond your control. PlayStation says public Wi-Fi quality can affect the experience; changing Portal settings cannot guarantee a fix for a congested or restricted hotspot.
