If a PowerToys utility will not open, first check that PowerToys is running in the background and that the specific utility is enabled. If only a shortcut fails, check its configuration and whether an elevated app is involved. Then update and restart PowerToys, check for a documented app conflict, and collect a bug report if the problem persists.
First identify what is failing
PowerToys includes a Settings app, background processes, and individual utilities. A failure in one does not necessarily mean the others are broken. Check whether Settings itself will not open, PowerToys is absent from the system tray, one utility is disabled, or only a shortcut or action fails.
If PowerToys is running, open it from the system tray and use the Settings home view to check the affected utility’s enabled state. Many utilities depend on both PowerToys running in the background and the utility being enabled. Microsoft states those prerequisites explicitly for PowerToys Run.
Check the utility, startup, and shortcut settings
Make sure the utility is enabled
In PowerToys Settings, select the affected utility and verify its toggle is on. If you are troubleshooting a utility other than Run, check that utility’s own settings rather than assuming its controls match another utility.

Check whether PowerToys starts with Windows
In General settings, review the Run at startup option. If the utility works after you open PowerToys manually but not after signing in, startup configuration may explain the difference.
Test the configured activation shortcut
For PowerToys Run, confirm the activation shortcut shown in its settings, then test that exact shortcut. A shortcut failure alone does not establish that the utility itself is broken. If it fails only when an elevated window is active, try Run’s “Use centralized keyboard hook” option; it is a targeted option for certain elevated-window cases, not a general repair.

Command Palette also needs to be enabled and running in the background, and its activation shortcut is configured in its own settings. Use the current PowerToys settings documentation for the utility you are troubleshooting.
Update and restart PowerToys
Open General settings and check the installed version and update status. Microsoft documents both automatic updates and a manual update check; when an automatic update is applied, PowerToys restarts and reports the running version. After changing settings—or after closing a potentially conflicting app—restart PowerToys and test the same action again. An update is worth checking, but it is not a guaranteed fix.

Use administrator mode only when elevation is relevant
If a utility fails specifically while you are interacting with an administrator-level application, Windows’ elevation boundary may be the cause. Microsoft explains that PowerToys may not interact correctly with elevated apps unless PowerToys is elevated too.
To test this, open PowerToys Settings > General and choose Restart as administrator. You can also enable Always run as administrator in General settings. Elevation is relevant to elevated-app interactions; it is not the first step for every PowerToys problem. See Microsoft’s administrator mode guidance.

Check for a known application conflict
Open PowerToys Settings > General and review Application compatibility information. Microsoft documents that some applications can cause PowerToys issues and currently identifies TaskbarX as a conflict: close TaskbarX manually, then restart PowerToys to test whether it was interfering. The compatibility list can change, so check the current entry rather than treating this as a universal cause.
Review installation health and Windows requirements
If PowerToys Settings will not launch, multiple utilities fail, or the problem began after an installation change, check the supported environment and installation options. Microsoft’s installation documentation lists Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 2004 (20H1/build 19041) or newer, and a 64-bit x64 or ARM64 processor. It also identifies the WebView2 Runtime requirement and says the bootstrapper installs the stable runtime during setup.

Microsoft documents installation through GitHub or the Microsoft Store, as well as WinGet. If required components appear to be missing or the installation seems damaged, use a supported installation path to repair or reinstall. If the issue is reproducible, collect diagnostic information before uninstalling so useful logs are not lost.

In PowerToys Settings, go to General > Diagnostics & feedback to generate a bug report package and open a prefilled GitHub issue. The PowerToys Bug Report Tool collects logs and system information. Regular logs are stored at %LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftPowerToysLogs; ETL logs for most utilities are stored at %LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftPowerToysETL, according to the PowerToys logging documentation.
Include the PowerToys and Windows versions, the utility affected, the exact steps that reproduce the failure, whether it happens only with an elevated window, and what changed just before it started. Review the diagnostic package for private information before posting it. Microsoft’s PowerToys overview points users to search existing repository issues or file a new one.
