A simple system is enough: make one folder or notebook for each class, give each lecture note a predictable title, and use a small number of tags for topics or follow-ups that cross course boundaries. Then review each note briefly after class so it is easy to find and understand later.
Set up a structure you can keep all term
- Create one folder or notebook per course. Use the course name or code, such as “BIO 204,” so class notes have an obvious home.
- Make a separate note for each lecture or study session. Avoid packing an entire term into one document; separate notes are easier to scan and revisit.
- Use a consistent title. Try
2026-10-07 — Cell structureor, if your syllabus is organized by weeks,Week 03 — Cell structure. The date-first format sorts chronologically in many views; the week format makes sense when course materials use week numbers. - Put useful context at the top. Include the lecture topic and then capture key ideas, examples or diagrams, and questions to revisit. Type, handwrite, add images, or scan materials as appropriate for the class and app.
- Add only tags you will actually search for. A few examples are
exam,follow-up, or a recurring topic shared by multiple courses. Tags work best as cross-course labels, rather than a second, overlapping folder system. - Do a short cleanup after class. Rename the note if needed, add missing context, and mark questions that need an answer. Keep the main folder structure stable instead of reorganizing it every week.
This is a practical organization workflow, not a promise of better grades or retention. App features make the structure possible; they do not establish a learning outcome.
Choose an app by what you need to capture and retrieve
There is no universal best notes app for every tablet or course. Compare the functions that matter to you: organization, ways to capture material, search, export and sync, device compatibility, accessibility, storage, and cost. The options below describe documented capabilities, not comparative test results.
| App | Relevant documented features | Useful fit to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Notes on iPad | Typed notes, handwriting, sketches, checklists, document scans, and Quick Notes; iCloud can keep notes up to date across devices. Tags and Smart Folders support additional organization. Apple says iPad Notes can be used with Apple Pencil or a finger. | Consider it if you use an iPad and want a mix of typed and handwritten notes with built-in folders, tags, and Smart Folders. Feature details: Apple’s Notes guide and Apple’s tag and Smart Folder guidance. |
| Microsoft OneNote | Microsoft describes typed text, pictures, graphics, digital handwriting, audio and video clips, lists, links, search, and tags. Its iPad and iPhone instructions explain starting a note by tapping a page and typing. | Consider it if flexible note content and search or tags are important. See Microsoft’s note-taking and formatting overview and basic tasks for OneNote on iPad or iPhone. |
| Goodnotes | Goodnotes Support documents creating, moving, customizing, finding, exporting, and deleting folders and documents in the Library for Apple devices. Its App Store listing describes handwriting search, PDF export, and backup and sync options. | Consider it if a library-based workflow, handwriting search, or PDF export matters. Check the current app listing, device, version, plan, and settings before relying on a particular feature: Goodnotes Library instructions and Goodnotes’ App Store listing. |
Use folders, tags, and search for different jobs
Folders or notebooks hold the course context
Keep the main structure predictable: one course space, then separate notes for class meetings or study sessions. This makes it clear where a note belongs without requiring a deep hierarchy.

Tags connect notes across courses
Use tags for things you may want to gather from several classes, such as exam preparation, unanswered questions, or a recurring subject. Apple documents tags as a categorization method and Smart Folders as a way to organize notes by criteria. Apple also notes that some shared or nested folders, and folders containing locked notes, cannot be converted into Smart Folders. See Apple’s iPad guidance for tags and Smart Folders.
Search helps when you do not remember the folder
Use distinctive words in note titles and include important course terms in the note itself. Microsoft describes search and tags in OneNote; Goodnotes’ current App Store listing describes searching handwriting. Search behavior can vary by app version and device, so check the feature on the setup you use before making it your only retrieval method.

Make a deliberate choice about handwriting, sync, and exports
- Handwriting: A stylus is optional. Apple documents writing or drawing in iPad Notes with Apple Pencil or a finger. If you prefer a stylus, confirm that it is compatible with your exact tablet model; iPad guidance does not establish compatibility with other tablets.
- Sync and backup: Apple’s Notes guide describes iCloud syncing. Goodnotes’ App Store listing describes iCloud sync and backup options to cloud services. These are vendor-described capabilities; confirm the account, settings, applicable plan, and current listing for your device before relying on them.
- PDFs and sharing: If a course depends on annotated handouts or submitted notes, check that the app can export or share in the format your instructor accepts. Goodnotes’ listing describes PDF export, but verify the current workflow and requirements before using it for an assignment.
- Device and cost: Confirm that the app works on your tablet and any other devices you need. Current prices, storage limits, accessibility details, and full feature parity across platforms are not established here; check current product documentation and terms.
Keep the system tidy without over-organizing
- Keep course folders stable for the term; change a folder name only when it improves recognition.
- Use one title pattern consistently, including dates or syllabus week numbers as appropriate.
- Prefer a few meaningful tags to many near-duplicates.
- When notes contain scans, images, or handwritten material, include a clear typed title so the note remains identifiable in the list.
- After setup, confirm that your notes appear in the intended account and that sync or export works the way you expect before depending on it for important class material.
