If you need a foldable phone now, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is Samsung’s current announced generation and has been on sale since August 2026. If your current phone is working well, waiting is reasonable—but Samsung’s reviewed launch announcements do not give a date or specifications for the next Fold. There is no confirmed successor schedule to wait against.
What Galaxy Z Fold model is available now?
Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Fold8 in August 2026. Sales began in select markets on August 7, with rollout expanding to 106 markets, according to Samsung’s global launch announcement. Availability and pricing can differ by country, so check local retailers and carriers.
The launch materials do not announce the name, release date, or specifications of a later Galaxy Z Fold. Buying now means choosing an available Fold8; waiting means holding off for an unannounced model, not for a confirmed near-term launch.
When buying the Fold8 now makes sense
- You need a phone soon. The Fold8 is the current announced generation, so there is no confirmed successor date that makes buying it an obviously mistimed choice.
- You will use the large inner screen. Samsung says the Fold8 weighs 201 g and has a 4:3 main display, framing its cover screen for quick interactions and its main screen for more immersive reading, viewing, and gaming. Those are manufacturer descriptions; consider whether a wider unfolded screen fits the apps and tasks you actually use. See Samsung’s launch details.
- You can get an acceptable effective price. Compare the current unlocked price with carrier and retailer offers, and calculate trade-in value using your own device. A discount matters only if the final cost and terms work for you.
When waiting is the better choice
- Your current phone meets your needs. Keeping it avoids committing to a premium purchase before Samsung has announced what comes next.
- You want a feature the standard Fold8 lacks. Tom’s Guide’s review says the standard model has no telephoto lens or S Pen support and carries an IP48 rating. If any of those are decisive, wait for a future announcement or compare the separate Fold8 Ultra rather than assuming a later model will fix the omission. - You dislike uncertainty. Waiting could bring another option, but there is no established successor timing or specification to plan around. Set a personal deadline or condition for reconsidering—such as a price you are comfortable paying—rather than treating a rumored date as a promise.
How much does the Fold8 cost, and what offers are relevant?
Tom’s Guide lists US prices of $1,899.99 for 256GB, $2,099.99 for 512GB, and $2,499.99 for 1TB. These are the review’s stated US list prices, not a guarantee of today’s selling price. On October 6, 2026, the same publication reported an Amazon price of $1,549, down from its stated usual price of $1,899. Samsung’s US launch-period pre-order promotion advertised up to $1,200 in eligible trade-in savings, or up to $200 without a trade-in toward other eligible devices. Those were pre-order terms, not verified current offers. Check Samsung’s offer information alongside current Samsung, carrier, and retailer terms for your location and device before calculating your effective price.
Which Fold8 trade-offs should shape the decision?
Size and handling
Samsung gives the Fold8 a weight of 201 g and a 4:3 main-screen aspect ratio. The company calls it the lightest Galaxy Z Fold to date. Tom’s Guide reports a 7.6-inch main display. A large unfolded screen can be useful for reading and multitasking, but the phone remains a different handling proposition from a conventional handset; try it in person if weight or one-handed use is a concern. Camera, pen, and durability expectations
Tom’s Guide identifies the lack of a telephoto lens and S Pen support, as well as an IP48 rating, as limitations of the standard Fold8. These are reviewer-reported specifications and assessments, not a claim that every buyer will find them deal-breakers. If zoom photography, pen input, or a different dust-protection rating matters to you, compare the exact model specifications before purchase.
Battery results are test-specific
Tom’s Guide measured 12 hours and 19 minutes in its own 5G web-surfing battery test. That is one publication’s result under its test conditions, not a prediction of how long every user’s Fold8 will last; usage, network, and settings affect battery life.

Is the Fold8 Ultra the next model?
No. The Fold8 Ultra is a higher-priced, same-generation option—not a successor. In Tom’s Guide’s comparison, it has an 8-inch main screen, a telephoto camera, and a larger battery, while the standard Fold8 is the more compact, lighter choice. Consider the Ultra if those differences matter, but compare current local prices and exact specifications; the review does not make it a future Fold generation. - Decide whether you need a phone now. If your current phone is failing or no longer suits your work, the Fold8 is available; if it is fine, you can wait without missing a confirmed successor launch.
- Check the price you can actually pay. Compare the same storage configuration across Samsung, carriers, and retailers, then subtract only trade-in savings you have verified for your own device and location.
- Check fit and essential features. Handle the Fold8 if possible, and decide whether its screen size and weight work for you. Confirm that its camera, pen, and durability characteristics meet your needs.
- Set a waiting condition. If you choose not to buy, pick a date to reassess or a specific announcement or price change you are waiting for. No successor date is established in the reviewed official sources.
Samsung reported that pre-orders for the new lineup increased by more than 30% compared with the previous generation. That is a company-reported figure about pre-orders, not independent evidence that the Fold8 is the right choice for an individual buyer.
