The material alone does not make a robot waterproof: enclosure geometry, seal condition, assembly, depth, salt exposure, impact, optics and maintenance access all matter. Rigid tubes and end caps suit many electronics bays; flexible tubing or skins can suit robots that need to bend.
Choose an architecture before choosing a material
First decide whether the robot needs a rigid dry compartment for electronics or a body that flexes as part of its movement. A rigid housing separates sensitive electronics from wet mechanisms and is generally designed to open for service. A flexible skin can accommodate deformation, but its seams, transitions, actuator exits and cable routes become important sealing points.
Neither approach is universally better. The appropriate design depends on intended depth, water type, immersion duration, flexing, temperature, impact exposure and how often the robot must be opened. Treat the enclosure, seals, ports and penetrators as a system, and use a pressure rating that applies to the exact product and configuration.
Rigid enclosures: protect electronics with a serviceable housing
Rigid housings commonly use a tube with end caps and O-ring interfaces. Blue Robotics documents configurable subsea housings in 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, 6- and 8-inch sizes, using cast optically clear acrylic tubes and O-ring sealing interfaces. Its technical reference also lists a small enclosure made from glass-filled polycarbonate, with aluminum components used at enclosure interfaces. These are examples of established designs, not a ranking of materials or a guarantee that a generic tube will withstand a particular depth.

Material choice should reflect the whole assembly: tube, end caps, seal geometry, penetrators and pressure rating. Clear acrylic may be useful where visibility through the housing matters; other designs may prioritize different mechanical or optical needs. Do not infer a pressure capability from a material name alone.
Flexible bodies: waterproof skins and tubing
Soft underwater robot designs use approaches such as flexible waterproof PVC tubing, silica-based or other compliant waterproof skins, and waterproof servos. O-rings may seal servo case splits, screws and shafts. These methods can accommodate bending or deformation, but they create different maintenance demands from a rigid electronics tube.

For a flexible design, account for repeated flexing, seam construction, transitions between soft and rigid parts, actuator and cable exits, repairability, and how electronics are protected. The available review describes these approaches but does not establish one skin material as best for a particular robot.
O-rings: the interface and assembly determine the seal
O-rings can seal enclosure joints and component interfaces when the groove, squeeze, dimensions, elastomer and mating surfaces are appropriate for the specific design. A seal that is the wrong size or material, or one assembled against a scratched or contaminated surface, can fail even if the housing itself is sound. A technical reference lists nitrile and FKM seals for different products; that does not make the elastomers interchangeable in every application.

Before closing a housing, inspect the tube ends, grooves and end caps for dust, debris, scratches or other damage. Blue Robotics’ Watertight Enclosure User Guide advises: “Inspect the inner ends of the enclosure tube, the O-ring grooves on the flanges, and the end caps to make sure they are free of scratches, damage, or dust/debris.” Avoid tools that can gouge a seal or its groove; the guide recommends plastic tools for removing O-rings from aluminum sealing flanges.
Cable entries need a pressure-appropriate penetrator
A cable entry is a separate sealing interface, not an afterthought. In a potted cable penetrator, potting bonds around the cable, while an O-ring face seal seals the penetrator to the enclosure. The two seals do different jobs: potting closes the cable-to-penetrator path, and the face O-ring closes the penetrator-to-housing path.

Blue Robotics distinguishes its general-purpose potted penetrator, which is a low-pressure seal, from higher-pressure rated penetrators. It provides no official depth rating for a general-purpose user-sealed assembly because performance depends on materials, surface preparation, contamination, potting quality and cure conditions. For deeper or otherwise pressure-critical use, choose a penetrator with a rating for the intended conditions and installation. Applying epoxy yourself does not give an assembly a rated depth.

Assemble and check the enclosure before submersion
- Confirm the intended conditions. Check the exact housing and penetrator instructions and ratings for your target depth and installation. A rating belongs to the specified product or configuration, not to a generic material.
- Inspect sealing surfaces. Check tube ends, O-ring grooves and end caps for dust, debris, scratches or damage. Use suitable tools when removing seals so you do not damage the O-ring or groove.
- Fit the specified seals and penetrator. Use the correct seal dimensions and material for the particular groove or component. Follow the penetrator’s installation, potting and cure instructions where applicable.
- Test using the enclosure’s prescribed method. Where supported, a vacuum plug and hand pump can check enclosure seals without immersing the assembly. Follow the enclosure-specific procedure; a seal check is not a substitute for pressure qualification.
- Plan for saltwater exposure. Blue Robotics warns that stainless-steel hardware can promote galvanic corrosion of aluminum during long-term saltwater immersion. Its enclosure guidance identifies Tef-Gel or a sacrificial zinc anode as mitigation; confirm compatibility and maintenance needs for other assemblies.
Match the design to the robot’s real use
- Mostly rigid robot with serviceable electronics: consider a rated tube-and-end-cap enclosure with replaceable O-rings and purpose-designed cable penetrators.
- Robot that must bend: consider flexible tubing or a compliant skin, then design and inspect its seams, transitions and exits as carefully as the body material.
- Pressure-critical operation: rely on ratings for the exact housing, penetrator and installation, not on an assumed capability of acrylic, polycarbonate, a coating or user-applied potting.
- Long-term saltwater use: consider galvanic compatibility of metal hardware and include inspection and maintenance in the design.
