Path tracing can make a game’s lighting more coherent by simulating direct and bounced light, shadows, and reflections together. The trade-off is a sharp increase in GPU workload: there is no single graphics card that guarantees smooth path tracing in every game. The useful hardware target depends on the title, resolution, frame-rate goal, graphics settings, and whether features such as upscaling or frame generation are enabled.

What does path tracing do in a game?

Path tracing is a way to render lighting by following light paths through a scene. Rather than applying ray tracing only to selected effects, such as reflections or shadows, a path-traced mode can account for multiple major lighting effects as part of a more unified approach. The precise implementation varies by game.

In Cyberpunk 2077’s Ray Tracing: Overdrive technology preview, the developer and NVIDIA describe a scene in which many light sources contribute to illumination, light bounces between surfaces and carries color, shadows respond to light sources, and reflections can include bounced lighting. These effects can make the relationships between lights and surfaces feel richer, particularly around colored lights and reflective materials; they are not a guarantee that every scene will look more realistic to every player. NVIDIA’s description of Cyberpunk 2077 Overdrive explains the mode in that game-specific context.

Overdrive was introduced as a technology preview, not as a universal graphics standard. Cyberpunk’s conventional graphics options and its standard ray-tracing settings are distinct from Overdrive.

How is it different from standard rendering and selective ray tracing?

Rendering approach Lighting coverage What you may notice Hardware implications
Conventional rendering Uses the game’s standard rendering methods; it does not necessarily trace light rays. Appearance depends on the game’s baked, approximated, or other lighting techniques. Use the game’s conventional graphics requirements and target settings.
Selective ray tracing Applies ray tracing to particular effects, such as reflections or shadows. Those selected effects can respond to scene geometry and lighting in ways the game’s conventional effects may not. Use the game’s requirements for its specific ray-tracing preset.
Path tracing Can bring several major lighting effects into a more unified light-transport approach. Direct and indirect illumination, shadows, and reflections can work together more consistently. Often much more GPU-intensive; compare requirements for the exact path-traced mode.

These are broad distinctions, not a promise that every game implements the same effects. A game described as having ray tracing may trace only selected effects rather than offer a fully path-traced mode.

Do you need an RTX 4080 for path tracing?

No. An RTX 4080 is not a universal path-tracing requirement. It is part of one named configuration: CD PROJEKT RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.0 / Phantom Liberty Overdrive profile for 4K at 60 FPS. That profile lists a GeForce RTX 4080, 16 GB of VRAM, 24 GB of system RAM, and DLSS Frame Generation switched on. See the official Cyberpunk 2077 system requirements for the game’s separate conventional, standard ray-tracing, and Overdrive configurations.

  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5070 Ti

For Overdrive, CD PROJEKT RED’s support guidance says it is currently recommended on NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 Series cards from the RTX 4070 Ti upward, and on an RTX 3090 at 1080p/30 FPS. These are recommendations for Cyberpunk’s mode, not equivalent promises of performance across all resolutions, settings, or games. The official Overdrive guidance also says the mode is “very GPU intensive” and is off by default: CD PROJEKT RED: Path Tracing & Overdrive Mode.

Does path tracing need more VRAM at 4K?

Higher resolutions can require more video memory, but use numbers only for the task they describe. CD PROJEKT RED lists minimum VRAM thresholds for Cyberpunk path-traced Photo Mode screenshots of 8 GB at 1080p, 10 GB at 1440p, and 12 GB at 2160p. These thresholds apply to single screenshots, not real-time gameplay. The developer notes that a screenshot takes one render, while gameplay must render frames repeatedly. Do not use the Photo Mode figures to judge whether a GPU will run Overdrive smoothly while playing; consult the game’s gameplay requirements for that.

How to judge whether your PC can run a path-traced mode

Start with the game’s own requirements for the exact preset rather than a broad “path tracing” label. Check each of these before deciding whether your hardware is suitable:

  • Game and mode: Confirm whether the title offers path tracing or only selected ray-traced effects, and find the requirement row for that mode.
  • Resolution and frame rate: A 4K/60 target is a different workload from 1080p/30. Match the target you actually want.
  • Graphics settings: The path-tracing preset may be combined with other demanding options. Compare the requirements for the intended settings.
  • GPU and memory: Check the specific graphics-card model and VRAM, as well as the game’s system-RAM and CPU requirements.
  • Supporting features: Note whether the profile depends on upscaling, frame generation, or ray reconstruction, and whether your game and GPU support them.
  • Gameplay or a still image: Requirements for rendering one screenshot are not gameplay requirements.

Requirements change as games are patched and new hardware appears. For Cyberpunk, use the official Update 2.0 / Phantom Liberty requirements rather than older box requirements when assessing the listed Overdrive profile.

Can upscaling and frame generation make path tracing practical?

They can help in supported combinations, but they do not make performance universal. Cyberpunk’s cited 4K/60 Overdrive configuration explicitly includes DLSS Frame Generation. NVIDIA also describes DLSS Super Resolution and Frame Generation in the context of Alan Wake 2; those features and results depend on the supported game and hardware. NVIDIA’s Alan Wake 2 feature overview quotes Remedy Entertainment Lead Graphics Programmer Tatu Aalto describing Ray Reconstruction in that game: “The new Ray Reconstruction feature in DLSS 3.5 renders our fully ray-traced world more beautifully than ever before, bringing you deeper into the story of Alan Wake 2.”

A frame-generation setting in a requirements profile is part of that specific configuration; it is not proof that another GPU can meet the same target, nor a substitute for checking the game’s stated hardware requirements.

What if your local PC is not powerful enough?

Cloud gaming is a separate route where a supported game runs on remote hardware and streams to your device. NVIDIA describes GeForce NOW play with RTX features for Cyberpunk on lower-end local hardware. This does not remove the need for an internet connection or establish local-PC requirements for other games. Service availability, catalog, network quality, latency, and plan support vary, so check the current service and game listings before relying on this option.
